Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 'friend' is the most likely to have uttered: "I'm not great at the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?"

Answer: Chandler Bing

In episode 17 of season 8 of "Friends", "The One with the Tea Leaves", Rachel and Chandler are discussing the awkwardness that Rachel and Joey are feeling after Joey told Rachel he loved her and she did not reciprocate his feelings. In a moment of candor Chandler stated the above quote. Chandler was portrayed by Matthew Perry, Rachel by Jennifer Aniston, and Joey by Matt LeBlanc.

Chandler's sarcasm was developed at an early age as a defense mechanism because of the dysfunctional family he came from. His mother was an erotic novelist and his father was a drag queen. They divorced early in Chandler's life. Not only this but they gave him the middle name of Muriel. The kid did not stand a chance.
2. Dr. Perry Cox had a sarcastic wit that spared no one but his favorite target was JD. Which show featured these characters?

Answer: Scrubs

"Scrubs" followed the story of three interns at Sacred Heart hospital where Dr. Cox was their attending physician. Dr. Cox was known for his long winded sarcastic rants and the fact that he always called JD by girl's names. Along with JD were Turk and Elliot.

The show was told from the point of view of JD and his many day dreams. Dr. Cox was portrayed by John C McGinley, JD by Zach Braff, Turk by Donald Faison, and Elliot by Sarah Chalke.
3. In perhaps a case of life imitating art, Charlie Sheen was fired from which TV show on which he played Charlie Harper, a sarcastic, hedonistic, womanizing drunk, after going on a real life drug induced rant at the series producers and network?

Answer: Two and a Half Men

"Two and a Half Men" premiered in September 2003 and was a ratings success. Still, the controversial humor of the show made it ripe for attacks by some critics. Sheen's character, Charlie Harper, was a degenerate, misogynistic, and highly sarcastic person, especially to his immediate family. Sheen's personal life seemed to be reflected in his character as his reputation for wild partying preceded his stint on "Two and a Half Men", making him the perfect actor for the role.

Unfortunately his personal demons caught up with him and in January 2011 Sheen's personal life blew up yet again in a hooker and drug abuse spree that ended with him entering rehab for the third time in a 12 month period. In February 2011, Sheen lost it attacking the creator of the series, Chuck Lorre, and Warner Bros. In March he was terminated from the show and Ashton Kutcher was hired to replace him.
4. Benson DuBois was the wise-cracking butler of Governor Eugene Gatling on the TV series "Benson" but the character originated on what other TV series?

Answer: Soap

Benson, played by Robert Guillaume, first appeared on "Soap" (1977-1979) as the acerbic butler of the Tate family. On that show his last name was not revealed. In 1979 he left "Soap" to become the head of household affairs for Jessica Tate's and Mary Campbell's cousin, Governor Eugene Gatling, in his self-titled spin off "Benson". Gatling is a widowed, somewhat absent minded man who needs Benson to help him keep things in order and take care of his daughter Katie. Benson's main foil during the show was the German cook Gretchen Wilhemina Kraus, played by Inga Swenson. Both had previously been on "Soap".
5. Hawkeye Pierce used sarcasm to deal with the daily horrors he witnessed as a surgeon on the TV show "MASH". Who was Hawkeye's favorite target during the early seasons of the show?

Answer: Frank Burns

Alan Alda portrayed Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce and Major Frank Burns (Larry Linville) was his favorite target. The two were exact opposites and mixed as well as water and oil. Hawkeye was a draftee who did not care for military rules and regulations while Burns was a button-down military man through and through.

At first Hawkeye's partner in crime in tormenting Frank was "Trapper John" McIntyre (Wayne Rogers) and then it was B. J. Hunnicutt (Mike Farrell). Hawkeye used his sardonic and whimsical sense of humor to deal with the pressures of the war and military life.
6. In "Family Ties", Alex P. Keaton's sarcasm grew out of his disdain for his parents' hippie values. According to Alex, who embraced the conservatism of the '80s, which of these was NOT one of his heroes?

Answer: Ted Kennedy

Michael J. Fox played Alex P. Keaton, a dyed in the wool Reagan conservative much to his parents' dismay. Ted Kennedy was his parents' hero and someone Alex would have looked on with disdain. Alex embraced the conservative ideals of Reagan, Buckley, and Friedman and even had a Nixon lunchbox. Meredith Baxter-Birney played his mother Elyse and Michael Gross played his father Steven.
7. Niles was the sharp tongued butler on "The Nanny". He took special pleasure in tormenting C.C. Babcock, Mr. Sheffield's business partner. This remained true throughout the run of the show.

Answer: False

Niles (Daniel Davis) and C. C. Babcock (Lauren Lane) had a typical hate turned to love relationship that developed over the six seasons of the show. It was their early relationship of disdain for each other that fed most of Niles' sarcasm. Niles very much liked Fran Fine (Fran Drescher) and used her to thwart C. C.'s early romantic interests in Mr.

Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy), Fran's boss. Fran was hired to take care of his children. The show ended with the marriage of Niles and C. C.
8. Dr. Sheldon Cooper is a genius theoretical physicist who has trouble grasping the concept of sarcasm when it is aimed at him but employs it readily himself on "The Big Bang Theory". Which actor portrays Dr. Cooper?

Answer: Jim Parsons

Sheldon spends much time trying to determine when people are being sarcastic and when they are being serious. Because of this he ends up being sarcastic, many times unintentionally. As the series has gone on he learns how to use sarcasm to his own ends.

Sheldon's roommate is Leonard (Johnny Galecki), who must put up with Sheldon's antics and does so willingly because he realizes Sheldon would be lost without him. The two are physicists at Caltech along with their scientist friends Howard (Simon Helberg) and Raj (Kunal Nayyar).
9. The opinionated and obnoxious George Jefferson started out matching wits with Archie Bunker before spinning off into his own show where he faced the sarcastic wit of his maid Florence. Who played Florence on "The Jeffersons"?

Answer: Marla Gibbs

Marla Gibbs played Florence, the Jefferson's lazy do as little as possible maid. The object of most of her sarcastic wit was George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley), her boss. Her protector was his wife Louise "Weezy" (Isabel Sanford).

On "All in the Family" the Jeffersons were Archie Bunker's neighbors and a constant irritant to him. When their series spun off they moved to a 'deluxe apartment in the sky' and hired Florence as their maid. Being newly rich, George had some trouble adjusting and was always scheming at one thing or another.

Gibbs started as a recurring character on "The Jeffersons" but by season four had become a regular. She remained on the show throughout the rest of its run. Afterwards she starred in another sitcom "227" for five years.
10. Geoffrey Butler was the cynical butler on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". Perhaps his cynicism and wit came from his middle name. What was this name that he shared with a Walters and a Bush?

Answer: Barbara

Geoffrey Barbara Butler was portrayed by Joseph Marcell. Geoffrey was a proper English gentleman's butler who had served as the butler to the band Led Zeppelin and as a sparring butler for Chuck Norris before coming to work for the Banks. Over the seasons his more proper English attitudes gave way to a more caustic and sarcastic humor. Will Smith, playing Will Smith, calls him G but he never deviates from calling Will Master William except once in the series finale. G is the first person Will meets upon arriving in Bel-Air and Will mistakes him for his uncle Phil (James Avery).
