Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The doctor is too busy to see us. We are so glad that the nurse will see us immediately. After all, it has been said many times that nurses often know more than doctors. This series is about one such nurse. What show had Jada Pinkett Smith, Michael Vartan, Joanna Cassidy in the cast?

Answer: HawthoRNe

"HawthoRNe" (2009) premiered June 16, 2009 on Turner Network TV (TNT). Jada Pinkett Smith starred as Christine Hawthorne, chief nursing officer as a hospital located in Richmond, Virginia. Nurse Hawthorne continually challenged the system and her superiors to ensure the best care for her patients. On the personal side, Christine was recently widowed and, as a single parent, raised her teenage daughter.

Michael Vartan starred as Dr. Tom Wakefield, a possible love interest for Christine. Joanna Cassidy as Amanda Hawthorne was Christine's mother-in-law. Other nurses on the show were Ray Stein played by David Julian Hirsh, Candy Sullivan portrayed by Christina Moore and Bobbie Jackson played by Suleka Mathew.
2. We have been to one hundred doctors and no one can figure out what is wrong with us. We had better go and see Hugh Laurie, Lisa Edelstein and Omar Epps. On what show did these actors appear?

Answer: House, M.D.

"House, M.D." (2004) on the Fox network followed a group of medical diagnosticians led by Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) at a hospital located in New Jersey. Although brilliant, Dr. House was an extremely flawed man who did everything he could to avoid human interaction. His addiction to pain medication due to a muscle injury in his leg did not help. His only friend was Dr. James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) who House treated very poorly.

The purpose of House's team was to identify causes of medical problems that often could not be determined by other medical professionals. Lisa Edelstein (Dr. Lisa Cuddy) portrayed Dr. House's much verbally abused boss. The original team consisted of Dr. Eric Forman (Omar Epps), Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer) and Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison). After these three quit the team because of increasing differences of opinions with Dr. House, a new team was finally "hired" by the end of season four. The new team consisted of Dr. Chris Taub (Peter Jacobson), Dr. Lawrence Kutner (Kal Penn) and Dr. Remy "Thirteen" Hadley (Olivia Wilde).
3. They say laughter is the best medicine. We are in need of a good laugh after we received our latest medical bill. Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Ken Jenkins should be able to help us out. Which show were they on?

Answer: Scrubs

"Scrubs" (NBC - 2001 to 2008) (ABC - 2009) revolved around Dr. John "J.D." Dorian (Zach Braff) whose medical career at Sacred Heart hospital was documented throughout the comedy series. The show relied heavily on Dr. Dorian's daydreams, often very surreal at times. Advertised with the tagline, "half as long as 'ER' (1994-2009) but twice as funny", the show had its peak of viewers during its second season. Viewership dropped off dramatically from that point.

Donald Faison as Dr. Chris Tuck was J.D.'s best friend. Ken Jenkins as Dr. Bob Kelson was the Chief of Medicine who was much more concerned with the hospital's bottom line rather than patient care.
4. After paying our medical bill, we haven't any money left. But we are in need of medical attention since we have the flu. An inexpensive clinic was staffed by Rosa Blasi, Patricia Richardson and Rick Schroder. What was the name of this show?

Answer: Strong Medicine

"Strong Medicine" (2000-2006) played on Lifetime network. The show was based on a novel of the same name written by Arthur Hailey published in 1984. Whoopie Goldberg was one of the producers of the show.

Set at the fictional Rittenhouse Women's Clinic in Philadelphia, the show followed Rosa Blasi (Dr. Louisa "Lu" Delgado) as a doctor dedicated to helping poor women with their health issues. In order to accomplish this goal, Dr. Delgado became part of the clinic which also served patients who could afford their own health care. Dr. Dana Stowe (Janine Turner) (2000-2002) was Dr. Lu's first partner in the clinic. Dr. Andy Campbell (Patricia Richardson) (2002-2005) and finally Dr. Dylan West (Rick Schroder) (2005-2006) also appeared as Dr. Lu's partners. In addition to solving medical problems, the show also followed the doctors through their own personal troubles.
5. We are so sick; we really need to maintain some hope that things will get better for us soon. Perhaps Mandy Patinkin, Adam Arkin and Hector Elizondo will help us see that our glass is half full instead of hall empty. What hospital show had these three doctors on staff?

Answer: Chicago Hope

"Chicago Hope" (1994-2000) had the misfortune of not only premiering the same year as "ER" (1994-2009) but also in the same time slot. And both medical dramas were set in Chicago! Despite this, the show had a very faithful group of viewers which allowed it to air for six seasons.

Mandy Patinkin as Dr. Jeffrey Geiger was an outstanding surgeon but a damaged human being. His best friend was Dr. Aaron Shutt (Adam Arkin), the hospital's head psychologist. Hector Elizondo (Dr. Phillip Watters) was the hospital's chief of staff. As they and others went about saving lives (for the most part), they struggled to keep their own lives on track.
6. Our condition has gotten to the point that we have to check into the hospital. We are so glad that Blair Underwood, Vivica A. Fox and Hill Harper will be there to attend to us. On what show would we have found them?

Answer: City of Angels

"City of Angels" (2000) was set at Angels of Mercy Hospital located in the inner city of Los Angeles. As with most medical shows, the plot followed the personal as well as the professional lives of doctors and nurses who were on the television show. Blair Underwood was Dr. Ben Turner. Vivica A. Fox played Dr. Lillian Price, an old acquaintance of Dr. Turner and potential love interest. Hill Harper, in his first major role in a television series, portrayed Dr. Wesley Williams.

In addition to these outstanding cast members, Viola Davis, Gabrielle Union and Maya Rudolph all had recurring roles on the show.
7. Unfortunately, we are still in the hospital. The hospital has assigned three different doctors to our case that were played by Andre Braugher, Ravi Kapoor and Eric Dane. What show was this?

Answer: Gideon's Crossing

"Gideon's Crossing" (2000-2001) was loosely based on the real life of Jerome Groopman. The series was set in a teaching hospital in New England. Dr. Ben Gideon (Andre Braugher) was not only an excellent doctor, but also related well to his patients. He headed up the oncology ward where new and radical procedures were tried in order to save the patients. Dr. Gideon also served as a mentor to new doctors including Dr. Sid Shandar (Ravi Kapoor) and Dr. Wyatt Cooper (Eric Dane).
8. Perhaps the problem we are having is with our brain. Stanley Tucci, Mark Feuerstein and Indira Varma all worked in neurology. What show were they on?

Answer: Three Pounds

The title, "Three Pounds" (2006) references the fact that the average human brain weighs three pounds. Stanley Tucci starred as Dr. Douglas Hanson, a neurosurgeon whose extraordinary skills in medicine were only matched by his ego. Dr. Jonathan Seger (Mark Feuerstein) played a new doctor who arrived in the first episode to become Dr. Hanson's new assistant. Dr. Adrianne Holland (Indira Varma) was also a colleague and possible girlfriend for Dr. Seger.
9. Finally, we are out of the hospital! Time for some real rest and recreation so we are taking a small vacation. Oops, we are having a relapse here at our plush resort. Time to call on Mark Feuerstein, Paulo Costanzo and Reshma Shetty. What show starred these three fine actors?

Answer: Royal Pains

"Royal Pains" (2009) followed the life of Dr. Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein) which changed dramatically after he decided that one of his emergency room patients had more of a critical need than another. Unfortunately, the latter patient died. The dead patient was the founder and main benefactor of the hospital, so Dr. Lawson was soon out of a job and also single since his girlfriend left him. To cheer his brother up, Evan R. Lawson (Paulo Costanzo) suggested a trip to the Hamptons, an exclusive conclave for the rich and famous.

At an upscale gala, Dr. Lawson saved the life of a party attendee. He was soon offered the position of concierge doctor; a doctor who makes frequent house calls to patients where money seems to be no object. Joining his mobile staff was Reshma Shetty as Hank's physician assistant, Divya Katdare.

Not one to miss an opportunity, Evan R. Lawson (Paulo Costanzo) set himself as the CFO (chief financial officer) of the new medical service, "Hank Med".
10. Guess we should never have gone this far from the hospital. Despite all the doctors and medical attention, we have died. Our cause of death is a mystery. Perhaps Jill Hennessy, Miguel Ferrer and Lorraine Toussaint could have figured it all out. These coroners were found on what show?

Answer: Crossing Jordan

"Crossing Jordan" (2001-2007) followed the autopsies done and lives lived of its medical examiners (ME) and other support staff who worked out of the coroner's office in Boston. Dr. Jordan Cavanaugh (Jill Hennessy) would typically examine a body to look for cause of death.

More often than not, she discovered that foul play was involved and then she was off and running to solve the crime. Attempting to curb her enthusiasm was Dr. Garret Macy (Miguel Ferrer) as chief medical examiner. Lorraine Toussaint (Dr. Elaine Duchamps) was part of the staff during its second season; her character died from complications of E-coli.
