Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. James had his first credited TV role in 1986 on the daytime soap "Another World". Who was that cop turned attorney who left Bay City in 1990 to work for the Office of Equal Opportunity in Washington?

Answer: Zack Edwards

I was a fan of this soap myself, and watched steadily from the early 1980s until the series ended in 1999. Zack's family in Bay City consisted of Ruth (mom), Al (dad), and sister Julie. Jake McKinnon was also a long time favorite character on the series.

After the series ended, Tom Eplin reprised his role as Jake McKinnon on the soap "As the World Turns". Jack is from "Young and the Restless" and Bo is from "Days of Our Lives". "Another World" debuted as a 30 minute soap in 1964 and was the first daytime drama to go to a full hour format.
2. After getting his start on a soap opera, James went on to play Brandon Walsh's boss at the Beverly Hills Beach Club for a couple of seasons on "Beverly Hills, 90210". What was the name of Brandon's beach club boss?

Answer: Henry

Henry Thomas appeared in 10 episodes over the course of two summers on the series. He was a great boss to Brandon, and happened to enjoy spending his lunch hour watching "Young and the Restless". He last appeared in the episode where Dylan and Kelly decided not to tell Brenda about the summer liaison. Steve, Dylan, and David were all major characters on the show.
3. James played Jackie's boyfriend Fisher on the sitcom "Roseanne".

Answer: False

He actually played a friend of Dan, Roseanne, and Jackie's from high school. Chuck worked at Wellman Plastics, but after the plant closed down, he joined in on the house renovation and resale plans Dan made with Roger. In more recent times, Americans have known that investment as a Fix It and Flip It deal. There have been many reality shows based on the concept. Chuck and Ann Marie Mitchell dated in high school, then married, and reunited with Dan and Roseanne many years later, when Becky and Chuckie Jr. went to school together. Chuck was also seen at a few poker games at Dan's house. James appeared in 19 episodes total.

Fisher was played by actor Matt Roth.
4. On which TV series did James play Detective Reggie Simpson?

Answer: Brooklyn South

The series only lasted one season (1997-98), and was created by Steven Bochco. It had many great actors in it, including Dylan Walsh, Richard T. Jones, Yancy Butler, Michael DeLuise, Titus Welliver, and Adam Rodriguez. Adam went on to star in "CSI: Miami" and the "Magic Mike" film franchise. James appeared in five episodes of the series set in Brooklyn, NY.

James did appear, uncredited, in a 1984 episode of "Saturday Night Live". "Another World" was his first credited role, and lasted several years.
5. James has always been easily believable as a leader, whether it be in law enforcement, medicine, or military. On which TV series or TV movie was James *not* in one of the aforementioned fields as a main character or a guest star?

Answer: ER

He played these types of roles in "Seinfeld", "Renegades", "Walker, Texas Ranger", "Brooklyn South", "Little Girl Fly Away", "A Slight Case of Murder", and "JAG". This does not even include any motion picture roles. He played Lt. Joe Abner on three episodes of "NYPD Blue". He was also a coach once on the short lived TV series "Dangerous Minds", based off the film of the same name.
6. The character of Lucius Pearl appeared in a few episodes of the TV series "Any Day Now", about friends who lost contact after high school, but rekindled their relationship when Rene returned home 30 years later. James played Lucius, a high ranking character in what position of power?

Answer: Judge

The series lasted 88 episodes from 1998-2002. It starred Annie Potts as Mary Elizabeth and Lorraine Toussaint as her friend Rene. Former "Different World" star Dawnn Lewis also appeared in a few episodes.
7. Did James play Detective Mike McKrew on the TV series "The Practice"?

Answer: Yes

"The Practice" was a TV series about a Boston legal team. It lasted from 1997-2004, and starred Dylan McDermott, Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, LisaGay Hamilton, and Lara Flynn Boyle. James appeared in 15 episodes of the series over three seasons.
8. Between 1998 and 2002, James played an FBI Deputy Director named Alvin Kersh on which TV show known for its "spooky" believer and its skeptic doctor?

Answer: The X-Files

Kersh became Mulder and Scully's direct boss in season six. He replaced Walter Skinner, who was believed to be aiding the duo's pursuit of the elusive "truth". Mulder had the nickname of Spooky and Scully was the doctor. All of those, except for "Roswell", were on the air during the time frame mentioned in the question. "Roswell" premiered in 1999.
9. Playing another position of power, mayor, in 2004 James guest starred on which show about goings on inside the White House?

Answer: The West Wing

Only "The West Wing" was airing in 2004, all of the other choices are more recent TV shows that have correlation with the White House. I left off "Scandal" as an incorrect option, because even though 2004 would negate it, he could guest star on that show at some point.

Many Shondaverse actors have appeared on "Scandal". Shondaverse refers to shows created or produced by Shonda Rhimes, like "Grey's Anatomy", "Private Practice", and "How to Get Away With Murder".
10. I saved my last question for what was possibly the most visible role of his career, Richard Webber on "Grey's Anatomy". What was Richard's occupation on the show?

Answer: Doctor

When the series debuted, Webber was the Chief of Surgery. He eventually would step down from that role, but not from his work as a surgeon. He was married to Adele, but his back story showed he'd had an affair with Ellis Grey, mother of the titular character, Meredith Grey. Late into the series, viewers discovered more about that relationship, nothing in which I'll spoil here for anyone not caught up. He also played Richard on a few episodes of "Private Practice". While I'd never be surprised to find James Pickens, Jr. cast as an assassin, I thought it was an amusing incorrect choice.

James has been in many films as well as TV. Among those are "F/X", "Menace II Society", "Dead Presidents", "Sphere", "How Stella Got Her Groove Back", "Just Wright", and "42". He was born in October 1954.
