Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This animal very sadly got caught in the under-stage mechanism during rehearsals and died of heart failure; Jonathan was to tell Maddie all about it, and later they were to go to the animal's funeral. What type of creature was this?

Answer: elephant

This was in the third episode ('The Reconstituted Corpse'). Adam Klaus was only seen once in the first series, and that was in the pilot episode - the rest of the time he was only talked about, and this was the first of those off-stage 'appearances' as Jonathan told Maddie what happened at the theatre.
2. What creature was used by the kidnappers to establish Roy Pilgrim's alibi in 'No Trace of Tracy'?

Answer: frog

Tracy entered Roy Pilgrim's house at 4pm, and at the same time a small frog was put into the duplicate room some miles down the road, where Roy was handcuffed to the false radiator. This, along with his small radio tuned to Classic FM, established the time-frame for the singer who was able to furnish Jonathan with an additional, animal-based, clue.
3. What was the Biblical name of the gorilla who used the toilet, ate paper and died falling from the landing?

Answer: Samson

Poor Samson died a similar death to his human, Dr Elliot Strange, because he also tasted the drugged gummed flap of an SAE (self-addressed envelope) which had been sent by an animal-rights activist and tripped out. Ironic really.
4. Throughout the first series Maddie would do the snooping around while Jonathan kept people talking, but in 'Time Waits for Norman' she turned the tables and sent him into the house to have a look around. What happened to him when he was in there?

Answer: a small dog attacked him

The worst of it was that the house did not belong to the right person - the man Maddie was questioning was just there trimming an old lady's hedges!
5. Two totally different types of animals had a part to play in the first episode of 'The Problem at Gallows Gate'. One of these was Kitty, Adam's pet tiger - but what animal was the other?

Answer: badgers

Jonathan took Maddie and Adam's sister Kitty with him when he went on his annual Badger Watch; Maddie had been burgled and could not stay in her flat, and Adam wanted Kitty out of the way. It was while they were watching the badgers that Kitty saw what she thought was a murder take place.
6. Although Jonathan saved Maddie's life in the Mother Redcap pub, he was also indirectly the means of endangering it, having switched on the electricity. After being thrown to the ground, Maddie watched in horror as which rodent was fried on the booby trap?

Answer: rat

Maddie had taken her shoes off to throw at the rat when she saw it, so was barefoot when Jonathan switched on the booby trap. He saw her discarded shoe first, and then rugby-tackled her to the floor before she was able to tread on the electrified pins by the window. A moment later the rat ran onto the area and sizzled out of this life. Ouch.

A special line was added to the credits to the effect that no animals were harmed during the making of the programme.
7. Why did bats have a part in the 1998 Christmas Special, 'Black Canary'?

Answer: they had been disturbed during their hibernation

A homeless vagrant had played a part in the mystery of Marella's death, but no one had much luck finding him - until Jonathan understood the reason for the bats which were flying around in January. Someone had disturbed their winter hideout. Getting the information from the local wildlife group, he and Maddie went looking for the tramp, and so got the last, vital clue.
8. You probably don't know that Tiresias was 'a blind soothsayer from Thebes' - unless you are familiar with the episode 'The Eyes of Tiresias', and if you are you will also be able to tell me what sort of habitat Tiresias lived in in the small cottage owned by Audrey Panguitch.

Answer: bowl

Tiresias was Aunt Audrey's goldfish, and it was his small round bowl which hid the CD that Jonathan knew hid the final proof of his theory of Andre Masson's death. In a lovely Creek turn, we first see the fish at the beginning of the programme when Jonathan and Maddie are watching an illusionist who is inside a similar bowl predicting the Lottery numbers.
9. When Jonathan demanded $100,000 from the Americans for his services in 'The Omega Man', Maddie was astounded, as he had never seemed to be bothered by money before (indeed, in 'The Scented Room' he took delight in refusing to disclose a solution and receive a reward). At the close of the programme Maddie finds a cheque for £65,000 in with the kittens she was caring for on behalf of an endangered animal shelter - but how many kittens were there?

Answer: 2

The kittens were not allowed to stay with Maddie because no pets were allowed in her flat, but she kept them in the travelling cage and hoped that no one would notice and report her. We see them at the beginning of the episode, then not again until the end, when the cheque appears in an envelope in their home, made out to the animal shelter and signed J J Creek. I wonder what the second J stands for.
10. Determined as always to prove himself to be more than he really is, Adam Klaus agreed to employ someone from an organisation which placed people with disabilities. His subsequent Minder was a diminutive man who made up for his lack of inches by challenging everyone (including Jonathan and Carla) with his gun. After a skinful of liquor, he became a skinful himself, as he was swallowed whole by the python which Adam had borrowed for his theatre show. What was this tiny Minder's name?

Answer: Joseph

When we first see the lady from the organisation Jonathan just happens to be sitting in a wheelchair and Adam's hand on his shoulder stops him from standing to greet her - he took delight in pretending that he had already employed a disabled person. The wheelchair was actually used by the cameraman to give a smooth run in movement!
