Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is NOT a character on the popular animated cartoon "Spongebob Squarepants"?

Answer: Squidbelly

Sandy Cheeks is a smart and athletic squirrel that lives in an air dome and ventures out in a diving suit. Mrs. Puff is Spongebob's constantly frustrated driving teacher, and Gary is Spongebob's pet snail that meows like a cat. There is a character named Squidward - not Squidbelly.
2. On the show "Barney and Friends", his theme song is "Barney is a Dinosaur". What folk tune is used for the melody?

Answer: Yankee Doodle

Barney is a large, purple-colored, anthropomorphic Tyrannosaurus rex. Unlike a real T. rex, who was strictly a meat-eating creature, Barney enjoys eating fruits and vegetables and is particularly fond of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. This show ceased production in September 2009.
3. Which one of these shows is not an animated cartoon?

Answer: Drake & Josh

"Drake & Josh" is a live-action sitcom about two step-brothers starring Drake Bell and Josh Peck. It airs on the Nickelodeon Network. All the other named shows are animated cartoons.
4. Which of these animated cartoons was the first to be shown as a prime-time show in the U.S.?

Answer: The Flintstones

"The Flintstones" first aired in the U.S. in 1960. It was meant for adult viewing at first and even had cigarette commercials (this was before cigarette ads were banned form TV in the U.S.). Its success quickly led to other animated prime-time series, including the others listed, as well as other animated spin-offs and live-action movies.
5. Children's entertainer Bob Keeshan is best known for his character Captain Kangaroo. Which of these other characters did he NOT portray on TV?

Answer: Mr. Hooper

Keeshan started in TV on "Howdy Doody" from 1948 to 1952 in the role of Clarabell the Clown. In 1953, Keeshan appeared as the grandfather-like character of Tinker in the show "Tinker's Workshop". After this, he presented his idea for "Captain Kangaroo" to the CBS network and it was accepted. "Captain Kangaroo" aired on weekday mornings from 1955 until Keeshan suffered a severe heart attack in 1981.

While working on "Captain Kangaroo", Keeshan also appeared the title role of the Saturday morning program "Mister Mayor" that aired from 1964-65. Mr. Hooper was a character from Sesame Street played by the late Will Lee.
6. Who hosted the early children's TV show "Winky-Dink and You"?

Answer: Jack Barry

"Winky Dink" (1953-57) was an animated/live action show with an innovative interactive format. Children were urged to send for special crayons and a "magic" drawing screen that was simply a sheet of clear vinyl that adhered to a TV screen with static electricity.

As part of the cartoon adventure, viewers had to help Winky by drawing an object that would help the character. For instance, drawing a bridge to cross a river or draw a cage to help trap a wild animal. Barry went on to produce and host many TV game shows, even after his involvement in the quiz show scandal of the 1950s.
7. Which of these shows did not make use of the technique of "Supermarionation"?

Answer: Land of the Lost

This technique was developed by the British production team of husband and wife Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The marionettes used in their productions had synchronized mouth movements to prerecorded dialogue, a novel innovation at the time. The Andersons also produced these other adventure series from the 1960s: "Supercar", "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons" and "The Secret Service".
8. Children's TV producers, and brothers, Sid and Marty Krofft were best known for their quirky, psychedelic-colored fantasy show "H.R. Pufnstuf". Which of these kids' shows did they NOT produce?

Answer: Fraggle Rock

The Kroffts first big break came from the Hanna-Barbera animation studio where they helped design the characters for the popular cartoon "The Banana Splits". They went on to produce many kid-orientated shows as well as variety shows such as "Donnie and Marie", "Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters" and "The Dean Martin Show." "Fraggle Rock" was created by Jim Henson.
9. On the PBS network, who hosted the popular series "Reading Rainbow"?

Answer: LeVar Burton

LeVar produced and hosted this long-running educational program which aired from 1983 to 2009, which encouraged children to read. Each episode explored a different theme from children's literature through dramatization or narration. Different celebrities often appeared to read a story.
10. A brainchild of Bill Cosby was "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids". Who was not a character on this animated cartoon show?

Answer: Poor Joe

This popular animated cartoon series ran from 1972 to 1985. Some of the other characters were: Rudy Davis, Mudfoot Brown, Russell Cosby (Bill's little brother), Bucky, Mushmouth, Mrs. Bryfogel and Pee Wee. Although a upbeat show in general, it had a serious educational undertone which was reinforced by Cosby, who appeared in live action segments at the beginning and end of each animated episode and also provided the voice for many of the characters, including Fat Albert Jackson and himself.
