Jere Burns plays Victor Vogelson, Ryan's rather eccentric father who may or may not be dying of cancer. Victor claims at first that he is dying of cancer and makes a big deal of it at every opportunity. Mike sets up an appointment for him to get a second opinion with Mike's oncologist friend.

At that point Victor informs Mike he is not dying but he is keeping it a secret from Ryan so he can bond with his son again. He goes to the second doctor and finds out on the hunting trip he really is dying but only after he admits to Ryan he had been lying the first time about dying. Now he really is dying yet again. To say it was a mess would be an understatement.

Victor is a professor of English and Mandy tries to get him to write a paper for her. Vanessa tells her not to do that but Mandy says he can leave his mark on the world one last time by doing this for her and she only needs a C so he doesn't have to do his best work.

Most of Ryan's family has responded they will be attending the wedding and most of Kristin's has responded they won't be. This upsets Vanessa since Ryan's group will be larger than Kristin's. Mandy offers her mother a solution - she can send out an instagram and fill the church. She says the only drawback is they would all be there ironically.

Mike tells Victor he and Ed are going to Ed's cabin for a hunting trip that weekend and invites him and Ryan along. At the cabin Ed says there are only two rules:
1) The big coffee mug is mine.
2) No one dies here because he wants to be able to sell the cabin to an Asian and they don't like it when someone has died on the property.

They are hunting turkey and while out on the hunt, Victor's phone rings scaring away the birds. Mike and Ed are less than thrilled. The call Victor got was from Mike's oncologist and Victor says he is dying again. Mike says, "How do you know? They don't give that information on the phone." Victor replies they want to see him Monday. Ed asks when and Victor replies first thing. Ed says my condolences knowing what the early appointment means.

Vanessa invites Chuck over to give him an invitation to the wedding. Since it is only eight or nine days before the wedding he says it is rather last minute and he already has tickets to the symphony. Vanessa says she will buy the tickets.

Mike tells Ryan that you don't get to pick your father. He wrote heartfelt letters to Mickey Mantle with no reply. Ryan asks him how old he was when he did this and Mike replies from the age of ten until thirty-one. Later on when Mike and Victor are discussing fatherhood, Mike says Victor was no Mickey Mantle.

Chuck says the symphony was going to play Bolero and he and his wife did not want to miss that so Vanessa agrees to have the band play Bolero. Satisfied, Chuck agrees that he, his wife, and his son will come to the wedding.

After Ryan storms out and Victor is left with the guys he says the only thing left for him is to have one of them shoot him. Mike says that is finally a plan he can get behind. Ed then cheerfully says let's do rock, paper, scissors to decide. Of course he was joking. Victor says he is serious he needs to die because his life insurance policy runs out in a month and he wants to make sure Ryan gets the money. Ed agrees with Victor and says he should be able to die the way he wants. Mike says no one is dying so Ed goes to bed.

Ryan stormed off when his father told him he was not at the hospital when he was born because he was having sex with his aunt Marie. He then tells Ryan that he has a half-sister who is his cousin Tammy. Ryan cannot handle all of this information and leaves the cabin. A little later on he calls Mike and says he has hurt himself so Mike and Victor set off to find him.
