Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode of the show, Clark Kent moved to Metropolis and met Lois Lane when he took a job at 'The Daily Planet'. Where did Lois first meet his alter-ego Superman?

Answer: On a space shuttle

In the first episode of 'Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman' Clark Kent had yet to invent his alter-ego, Superman, and was helping people surreptitiously. After a close call when he ruined his business suit helping a trapped worker out of a drain, Lois gave him the idea of creating a disguise by suggesting he keep a change of clothes at work.

The newly created Superman then saved a colonist transport space shuttle by swallowing a bomb that had been placed onboard. He met Lois (who was a stowaway on the shuttle) during the emergency.
2. In the episode 'The Green, Green Glow of Home', Lois and Clark travelled to Clark's home town of Smallville where Lois met Clark's parents for the first time. During the trip Clark also discovered what fact about his heritage?

Answer: That he was vulnerable to a rock known as kryptonite

At this stage of the show, Lois and Clark were just friends; although Clark had fallen in love with Lois, she had developed a deep crush on Superman. They visited Smallville and found out that the anti-Superman government agency, Bureau 39, had discovered a glowing green rock that could kill Superman. Due to an unexpected encounter with the rock, later dubbed 'kryptonite', Clark found out that exposure to it caused him extreme pain and stripped him of his powers.

Clark was originally from the planet Krypton and had been named Kal-El by his birth parents - but he had already discovered this information before the ill-fated trip to Smallville with Lois. He didn't find out that he was telepathic until other Kryptonians arrived on Earth in a later series of the show.
3. Lois and Clark's friendship was threatened when Lois became engaged to an archenemy of Superman. What was the name of Lois's first fiancé?

Answer: Lex Luthor

Lois and Clark's friendship had begun to fall apart when Lois refused to believe Clark's assertion that Lex Luthor was evil. The damage was completed when Lois rejected Clark's declaration of love in favour of Superman, and subsequently agreed to marry Luthor. However, Lois realised that she did actually have feelings for Clark and ended up saying "I can't" at the wedding. Lois and Clark were then eventually able to repair their relationship.

Lex Luthor, played by John Shea, was an evil businessman in 'Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman' and was Superman's main opponent in the first series of the show. Nigel St. John was Luthor's right-hand man who later obtained kryptonite and attempted to kill Superman. John Doe, otherwise known as Tempus, was a time-travelling criminal from the future and Kyle Griffin was a villain known as the Prankster.
4. Lois was grief-stricken when Clark was apparently shot and killed by the clone of which famous American outlaw, known for his relationship with Bonnie Parker?

Answer: Clyde Barrow

The episode 'That Old Gang of Mine' introduced the character of Emil Hamilton, who was producing clones of dead gangsters in order to test his theory that he could reprogram criminals to become law-abiding members of society. Clark was shot by the clone of Clyde Barrow whilst defending Lois from the clone of John Dillinger and was left with no choice but to pretend to be dead or have his secret life as Superman exposed. Lois was left heartbroken, believing that her partner and best friend had died before she had been able to tell him that she loved him.

Clark eventually managed to come up with an explanation for how he had survived and 'came back' from the dead. Lois tried to talk to him about her feelings only to find that he had fallen asleep!

Clyde Barrow and his partner Bonnie Parker were well known American outlaws in the early 1930s, whose story was depicted in the 1967 film 'Bonnie and Clyde' with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. John Dillinger and Charles 'Pretty Boy' Floyd were gangsters active at the same time as Bonnie and Clyde, with all four being killed by the police in 1934. Al Capone was a Chicago gangster during Prohibition, who was finally jailed for tax evasion in 1931.
5. The time-travelling villain Tempus told Lois that Clark and Superman were actually the same person. Which author of the novella 'The Time Machine' was featured in the show as the character responsible for introducing Tempus to time travel?

Answer: H. G. Wells

Lois first found out about Clark's secret life as Superman whilst they were attempting to track down Tempus in Smallville in 1866. They eventually succeeded in defeating Tempus and H. G. Wells returned them to their proper time (the 1990s). However, he also hid their memories of the whole event so Clark's secret remained intact.

Herbert George Wells lived from 1866 to 1946 and wrote several works of science fiction, including 'The Time Machine'. He also appeared as a character in 'Timelash', an episode of the long-running British TV science fiction show 'Doctor Who'.
6. In the episode 'And The Answer Is...', Lois's response to Clark's proposal of marriage was "Who's asking? Clark... or Superman?" How had she discovered the secret of his double life?

Answer: She recognised a gesture he made as both Clark and Superman

In this episode a criminal named Jason Mazik (aided by Lex Luthor's old sidekick Nigel St. John) had found a diary that identified Clark Kent as Superman. He used this information to blackmail Clark and later kidnapped his parents to force him to carry out a jewellery store robbery. When Lois offered to help Clark find his parents he responded by gently touching her face, and it was this gesture that Lois recognised when it was later repeated by Superman.

In the next episode, Lois turned down Clark's proposal because she needed more time, both to come to terms with Clark and Superman being the same person and to forgive him for having lied to her.
7. Lois and Clark got engaged after Lois had spent several days with Superman's powers, thanks to the Newtrich sisters and a chunk of red kryptonite. What name did Superman give Lois's new superhero persona?

Answer: Ultrawoman

Red kryptonite, introduced in an earlier episode of the show, had the effect of making Superman apathetic. In 'Ultrawoman', Lucille and Nell Newtrich shot Superman with a red kryptonite powered laser in an attempt to eliminate him by making him permanently apathetic. However, the plan backfired and Superman's powers were transferred to Lois, leaving him powerless and vulnerable. Lois took up the role of the world's superhero, and created a new character who was quickly named 'Ultrawoman' by Superman - after he spotted an advert for some 'ultra' vitamins.

Lois's stint in Clark's Superman shoes led her to realise that she really loved him. She proposed, and he answered her with "Who's asking? Lois... or Ultrawoman?" before saying "yes".

Like Superman, Superwoman, Batwoman and Catwoman are all characters from DC Comics.
8. Lois and Clark's first attempt at getting married ended in disaster when Clark married a clone and Lois was kidnapped by Lex Luthor. What small amphibian, of the order Anura, was Lois's clone regularly seen eating?

Answer: Frog

Lois was kidnapped shortly before her wedding by her former fiancé, Lex Luthor. She was then replaced by a cloned version of herself, who Clark duly married. It took Clark some time to realise that the switch had occurred despite the clone's erratic and childish behaviour and his knowledge of the existence of cloning technology. Meanwhile, Luthor planned to escape by having his and Lois's souls transferred to cloned bodies. Clark eventually rescued Lois, but she had suffered amnesia and forgotten everything about her life with him. It took several episodes before Lois and Clark were reunited and the whole storyline was controversial with the audience.

The clones featured in this storyline were fully grown adults whose growth had been sped up using the DNA of the 'doppelbuufo' frog. The clones were addicted to eating these frogs - Lois's clone even joked "I kind of need the vitamins".
9. Clark discovered that he was not the sole survivor of the planet Krypton when a group of 'New Kryptonians' arrived on Earth. Their leader, Lady Zara, was what relation to Clark?

Answer: Wife

The New Kryptonians visited Earth in order to locate the missing 'Lord Kal-El' aka Clark Kent or Superman. He was Lady Zara's birth-husband, as a result of an arranged marriage between them as young babies, and as such was destined to be the ruler of their colony. Clark agreed to leave his fiancée, Lois, and accompany his 'wife' to New Krypton in order to prevent a civil war. Luckily Lois and Clark's separation was short-lived as the evil Lord Nor invaded Earth and allowed Clark to make a swift return.

Clark's Kryptonian mother was named Lara and the show made no reference to him having either any siblings or cousins.
10. Lois and Clark finally got married in the episode 'Swear to God, This Time We're Not Kidding'. Where did the ceremony take place?

Answer: On a hilltop

Lois and Clark were supposed to get married at a local church in Metropolis but this plan was ruined when their wedding was targeted by Myrtle Beech, aka 'The Wedding Destroyer'. Their actual wedding took place on a strange grassy hilltop, where they were married by Mike, a mysterious 'guardian angel' type character who had appeared throughout the episode in various guises.

This episode of 'Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman' coincided with the publication of 'Superman: The Wedding Album', a comic book by DC Comics which also featured Clark Kent's marriage to Lois Lane. The comic book versions of the characters had waited 58 years for their wedding.
