Sayid was working in Le Portail d'Arabie when he was contacted by a man named Sami. He offered Sayid a job in his own restaurant, Le Jardin Croissant Fertile. However, in the end, it all turned out to be a trap, set up in order to capture Sayid and make him confess one of his crimes: torturing Sami's wife, Amira.

After being severely injured by Sami, Amira met Sayid in private and told him a moving story on how she saved her cat from being killed by some children. After hearing the similarities between Amira and the cat's situation, Sayid confessed having tortured her. Amira, however, decided to keep this revelation in secret from her husband and set him free, since she didn't want to be like her torturer.

The survivors in the camp decide to organize a ping pong competition and Sawyer participates, with the objective of recovering his "belongings", which were taken by everyone while he was with the "others". However, he ends up losing to Hurley, who later comments that he had a lot of practice so Sawyer should be proud he at least got three points.

After discussing with Locke, Sayid ventured in the jungle by himself and run into a brown cow. To his surprise, the animal quickly left after hearing a whistle and returned to his supposed master, a man with a patch in one of his eyes, who is standing right outside a building with a satellite dish on top.

Sayid and Locke quickly recognize this man as the one they saw in the Pearl Station, as seen in "The cost of living". In order to analyze the situation, Sayid enters the stranger's territory completely alone and is shot in the shoulder. Luckily, Locke and Kate manage to save their friend and force the man to drop his weapon.

Answer: The last living member of the Dharma Initiative

After this incident, the man introduced himself as Mikhail Bakunin, the last living member of the Dharma Initiative. Now convinced that Sayid, Kate and Locke are not "others", he takes them into the station and starts fixing Sayid's wound.

While taking care of Sayid, Mikhail revealed many things, including the existence of a submarine, a past confrontation between Dharma and the "others" and the purpose of his station (the Flame), which was communicating with the outside world. Unfortunately, the revelations stopped when Mikhail was confirmed to be an "other" and left unconscious by Sayid and Kate.

After finding a computer, Locke starts playing a chess game and, when he eventually beats it, he discover a secret video in which Marvin Candle instructs the viewer on how to use the Flame station. After many failed attempts, Locke discovers a code (7-7), which ought to be entered should the "others" take control of the station. Nonetheless, before being able of entering 7-7, Mikhail wakes up and takes Locke hostage.

Other codes mentioned were 2-4, 3-2, 3-8 and 5-6.

Once Mikhail is down, Sayid uncovers a secret entrance in the floor and goes down with Kate. There, they found Dharma manuals and C-4 explosives, but before they keep on investigating, Kate is assaulted by a woman. Eventually, the mysterious attacker is controlled and revealed to be Ms. Klugh, one of the "others".

Answer: The Barracks

After taking Ms. Klugh out, the survivors are involved in a new confrontation, which ends up with the woman's death and the capture of Mikhail. That night, using a map found in the basement of the station, they decided to visit the Barracks, which they believe to be the "others" village.

However, one last surprise awaits them when the Flame suddenly explodes, as a result of Locke entering 77.
