Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this episode, various conflicts erupted on the island. After a particular incident, someone vowed, "I will do what I need to do to find the man responsible." Who said this?

Answer: Sayid

As Jack tended to the head wound Sayid had received after being attacked (while triangulating the signal), Sayid revealed that the equipment had been destroyed and vowed to find the one responsible. Although Jack warned Sayid against any fast action, Boone arrived (after being beaten) and one word entered everyone's minds- Sawyer.
2. How many times throughout this episode was Sawyer seen with the letter he carried in his pocket?

Answer: Four

Sawyer is seen with the "Dear Mr. Sawyer" letter: 1) At the beginning of the episode, when Jack comes to look through his things for the medication, 2) When Kate approaches him and he tells her to read it, 3) When he wakes up after being injured, and he tells Kate the about the "real" Sawyer, and 4) When he sits alone on the beach and almost torches it with the cigarette lighter (then snaps the lid onto the flame at the last minute). The letter, which he had carried in his pocket since it was written, may have been destroyed in "Exodus" when Sawyer went into the water (twice) wearing the jeans in which it was carried.
3. Who was seen with the axe in this episode?

Answer: Sawyer

Once again the color red makes appearances. The axe (which had traveled all around the island) is used by Sawyer to chop wood. (It is still around in the last episode, when Sawyer is chopping wood for the raft.) The handle of the knife Locke gave to Sayid (which Sayid uses to sharpen the bamboo to torture Sawyer) is red, as well as on the charm of Claire's necklace, etc.
4. It is revealed in this episode that Sawyer used a cigarette to time the bottle rocket's launching.

Answer: False

Sayid reveals a great amount of mistrust he carries for others in this episode. The search for his attacker led him first to Locke. Locke avoided the questions and reasoned to Sayid that whoever had attacked him had a reason for not wanting off the island. He then purposefully defeated Sawyer's alibi by suggesting that he had used a cigarette to delay the fuse. (It didn't help that Sawyer was smoking nearby.)
However, it is ironically revealed later(in "The Greater Good") that it was Locke who was responsible. (His explained his reasoning as it being in "everyone's best interest", because they were too focused on getting off the island and couldn't see clearly- the same, he said, as with the raft.)
Locke had intentionally shifted the blame and suspicion toward Sawyer (when in fact Sawyer was responsible for neither the attack nor the medicine disaster), and so Locke had knowingly made the suggestion falsely.
5. As Shannon had an asthma attack, Sawyer walked by as he headed towards the caves. What was he carrying?

Answer: A water bottle

Shannon was having great difficulty breathing in the caves as Jack searched through his bag for medicine. Sawyer caught Jack's eye as he walked by with an empty water bottle in hand, barely glancing over at Shannon. When Sawyer went to fill the bottle in the small waterfall, Jack followed and attacked him.
After Shannon's second, more severe attack Jack and Sayid decided to settle on brutality in order to obtain the medication.
6. After Sawyer's "accident", Sayid retrieves Jack's bag of medicine from the caves. As he is running out, who does he nearly bump into?

Answer: Michael

After stabbing Sawyer with Locke's knife, Sayid is sent back to the caves to get Jack's medicine bag. He finds Boone and Shannon there, and Boone asks whose blood is on Sayid. Boone attempts to follow, but stays with Shannon. Sayid nearly runs into Michael, who is bringing eucalyptus leaves for Sun, as he hurries out.

Although there turns out to be no medication, the eucalyptus proves to be the "medicine" Shannon needed.
7. In Sawyer's final flashback, the realization that the couple had a son changed everything. When the boy entered, what question did he ask his mother?

Answer: "Will you read to me?"

The boy's entrance has a noticeably profound effect on Sawyer. When he comes into the room, Jessica asks her son if he if feeling better and the boy asks if she will read to him. Jessica replies that she would in a minute, they had company. The boy and Sawyer exchange a long gaze, until Sawyer calls off the whole deal.
8. The young boy who portrays the son of Jessica and David (and the child in whom Sawyer sees himself) is also the actor who played Sawyer as a boy in the later episode, "Outlaws".

Answer: False

After finally scamming the money from Jessica and David, Sawyer came face to face with their son. Although the boy reminded Sawyer of himself in that situation, the two children were portrayed by different actors.
(The boy in this episode was played by young actor Jim Woitas, while the young Sawyer in "Outlaws" was portrayed by Gordon Hardie.)
9. At what age did Sawyer claim to have become "the man he was hunting"?

Answer: 19

Kate realized that the letter Sawyer carried had not been written to him, but rather Sawyer had written it himself. Furthermore, it is revealed that the true "Sawyer" is the man who had ruined his life (and the man he had both hunted and become). Sawyer revealed to Kate the story of how (at age nineteen) he repeated what the real "Sawyer" had done to him, and he "became the man he was hunting".

Besides learning that Sawyer was from Knoxville, Tennessee, we find out in later episodes that his true name is James Ford, and he was on Flight 815 after being deported from Australia.
10. Sayid kissed Kate in this episode.

Answer: True

At the end of the episode, as Sayid was leaving the camp, it was Sayid who gave Kate a respectful kiss on the hand.
Sayid told Kate that he could not stay after doing what he had sworn never to do again. The song "I Shall Not Walk Alone", by Blind Boys of Alabama, played (as Sayid walked alone down the beach). This set the scene for the following episode, "Solitary", in which Sayid encountered much more than he had set out to find.
