Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, when the boars appeared and attacked from the fuselage, many of the survivors paired up to escape. Which pair was not seen as an example of such?

Answer: Michael and Walt

When facing impending danger, it is often typical of the survivors to pair up and protect one another. When the sleeping campers were alerted to the mysterious noises (courtesy of Vincent), three angry and beastly boars tore from the fuselage. Sayid helped Claire, Sawyer and Kate ducked behind shelter together, Jack helped Charlie after he was trampled, Jin shielded Sun, and Boone and Shannon hid behind a piece of metal. Michael and Walt were not seen in this scene.
Once again, Locke came off as a bit too awed and pleased by the near-disaster.
2. The next morning, Kate said to Sayid (who was working on the transceiver), "Looks like I'm not the only one who ___________________."

Answer: "didn't sleep last night."

Here, the transceiver was born.
Sayid told Kate that he had better things to do than collect wood (for burning the bodies in the fuselage). In later episodes, it is revealed that Sayid had insisted on respecting the religious beliefs of the passengers because the Islamic belief is that bodies should be buried. Sayid had even stayed an extra day in Australia to ensure that the body of his friend Essam was buried and not cremated.
Sayid told Kate it was too soon to talk about what he was creating, but she figured it out anyway.
3. Locke displayed a great amount of knowledge about the natural living habits of wild boar in this episode. He described, "There's a mother nearby- a two hundred fifty-pound rat with scimitar-like tusks and a _________ disposition who'd love nothing more than to eviscerate anything comes near."

Answer: Surly

Locke estimated that the boars in the fuselage had been razorback piglets, one hundred to one hundred-fifty pounds. After an argument broke out about the dwindling amount of food remaining, Locke revealed a case full of razor-sharp knives for hunting (presumably, originally for the walkabout). He said a boar's hunting pattern is to circle and approach from behind, so three hunters should go. (Kate, Michael, and Locke.)
With a case full of knives and a Halliburton full of five guns, it seems that flight was a bit too "safe" to begin with.
4. Kate admitted to Sayid that she was not going on the hunt to get the boar, but rather to attempt to get a signal on his transceiver.

Answer: False

Kate admitted this to Jack, by telling him she was a vegetarian when he asked, "This isn't really about boars?"
This was a curious statement, since Kate was eating bacon and eggs on Ray Mullen's farm in the previous episode. Whether or not it is in fact true must be left up to the viewer's discretion.
5. Who is the first person seen collecting firewood?

Answer: Michael

Michael is first seen dumping a pile of wood he carries as Walt plays ball with Vincent. He questions Walt as to where he is going and asks Walt to help him collect wood.
Jack is seen collecting wood next, and Claire asks him about performing a memorial service. Jack is surprisingly resistant and refuses, so Claire decides to take over. (The reasons for Jack's behavior is revealed in the next episode, when it is revealed that his father's body was one aboard the plane.)
Later, as Boone carries firewood, he tells Shannon about his concern Rose. (She blows him off once again.)
Notice that a man is also seen dumping a pile of wood from Locke's wheelchair, which had found many uses since Locke abandoned it.
6. In Locke's flashback, he is seen in the office break room playing a game with a coworker. He says, " Patience- a quality which you lack, GL-12, is the ________ of a leader."

Answer: Hallmark

This seems to be an important line said by Locke. Rose later repeats something similar to Jack, when she says he is patient and caring.
At the beginning, when Locke was speaking on the phone to "GL-12" about maneuvers in thirteen hundred hours (he was even referred to as "Colonel Locke") it appeared as though Locke really was in charge of some type of secret mission. Upon first glance, the audience most likely would have suspected something like this to be true of Locke, due to his knowledge and leadership. It was revealed, however, that Locke was working at a box company and had a very different character when he was paralyzed. (He was even being tormented by a coworker, Randy.)
Locke was later seen speaking on the phone with a woman named Helen, who was about to charge him $89.95 for another hour as a "customer". (The question: what type of service could this be?) Locke also admitted to having a therapist.
Notice the examples of "the numbers" which tie in to Locke, including that he had spoken with Helen for eight months and had been wheelchair-bound with his "condition" for four years.
7. After Shannon enlists the help of Charlie to help her catch a fish, Charlie turns to Hurley. Hurley mentions that in the past he had fished at a specific location, in which U.S. state?

Answer: California

Hurley became annoyed after Charlie said he thought Hurley knew how to fish, and Hurley said he did- off the Santa Monica Pier, with his dad and a real fishing pole and bait. This places Hurley in California as well (where Locke was also known to live pre-crash).
Hurley ends up sending poor Charlie tumbling into the waves after the fish with the spear in a very comical moment.
8. Which survivor in this episode says the word "lost"?

Answer: Sayid

Claire was searching through the luggage for wallets and passports for the funeral service and gives Sayid an envelope with his name on it. He replies, "Thank you. I thought I'd lost this."
Inside is revealed to be the photos of Nadia, Sayid's love whom he had been searching for.
(Notice that when Claire gave Jack the photo journal and he asked about the baby, Claire replied that "he's fine"- it is questionable whether or not she knew she was going to have a son.)
9. When Rose spoke with Jack on the beach she told him, "You know, doctor, you don't have to keep your promise. The one you made me on the plane- to keep me company until my husband got back from the restroom? I'm letting you off the hook." This paralleled nearly exactly a line that was said to Jack in which later episode?

Answer: Do No Harm

This is almost exactly the same thing that Boone told Jack in "Do No Harm", when he "let him off the hook" before he died.
Jack even told Rose that she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (which Charlie later suffered from after his encounter with Ethan) and Rose replied, "Aren't we all?" Jack could not believe that Rose believed her husband was alive, and Rose said those in the tail section probably thought the same thing about them.
Jack also saw the figure of his father in this episode, which was a prelude to the following episode, "White Rabbit".
10. On the evening of the fuselage burning, Claire reads passports, journals and driver's licenses for those who didn't survive. What was the middle name of the first woman whose information Claire was heard reading?

Answer: Martha

Some names included Judith Martha Wexler from Denton, Texas; Steve and Kristen, the couple in love and to be married; Emmanuel Rafael Ortiz from Los Angeles; and Millicent Louise (which we do not hear finished).
As the services are performed in front of the flaming fuselage, Jack is alone on the beach. Michael has an opportunity to speak with Locke about his encounter in the jungle. Locke says he did not see the monster, but this was obviously not true.
In his final flashback, Locke was with a Travel Agent who refused to allow him to participate in the walkabout. Locke (then seen in the wheelchair) yelled out that it was his destiny. He also yelled in several instances, "Don't tell me what I can't do!" (This was repeated many times in later episodes.) Despite his relentless argument, the walkabout left without him and Locke felt he must complete his destiny otherwise- by catching the boar on the island. As flames engulfed his wheelchair, Locke held the firelight reflection in his eye as his past burned up before him.
