Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, when Jack brought the exhausted Boone ashore, two survivors hurried to help Boone from the water. Who were they?

Answer: Kate and Charlie

While in the water, Jack was forced to make yet another crucial decision. Would he save Boone, or leave him and go back for Joanna? It was Kate and Charlie who helped Boone struggle ashore after nearly drowning, while Jack went back after the woman. (Her death left 46 survivors remaining.) Ironically, she was never supposed to be on the flight at all. Boone's less-than-grateful behavior left Jack facing the blame for being unable to save Joanna, though it was very clear that Boone would have been the drowned victim had Jack left him behind.
2. Which event did not occur twice, according to this episode?

Answer: Number of times Claire collapsed from heat exhaustion

Vincent is seen at the beginning of the episode, when Walt is brushing his teeth with Sun's aloe technique, and at the end when Michael gives him water. Jack is seen first with the bullies and then with his father as a young boy. Jack went under the water once and came up alone, then submerged a second time and reappeared with Boone. Claire was visibly exhausted and stumbled when she was sorting clothes with Kate, but collapsed only once.
3. In this episode, how many times did Jack's father "appear" on the island and be facing towards Jack?

Answer: Three

Jack first saw the suited figure facing him and standing in the waves on the beach (when he was speaking with Kate). Jack saw the man again (while being verbally attacked by Boone), facing him from the hills and then walking into the jungle. Jack proceeded to follow the elusive figure, which lead to a dizzying chase in the jungle.

At first Jack saw nothing, but then encountered the man (facing away from him). Notice the condition of the man's suit- there is not a wrinkle nor a flaw, and the creases are as if they had just been ironed.

The man then turns to face Jack a third time, and he sees it is his father. Jack sees the leading him ahead several more times, facing away, and makes an amazing discovery.
4. In Jack's flashback his father mentioned a boy who had died in the operating room, and had suffered from a lung disorder.

Answer: False

Mr. Shepard told Jack (as a boy) the situation in which he was forced to make decisions in the operating room for a young boy who ended up dying. (The boy had a "bad heart", which may or may not say something about Jack's father having a fatal heart attack.) His father went on about how he had "what it takes", but failure showed that Jack did not.

These words apparently still rang true in Jack's mind, and he later repeated them to Locke.
5. Shannon bargained with Sawyer for a spray that was supposed to keep away what type of critter?

Answer: Sand fleas

Sawyer is seen reading "Watership Down" when Shannon approaches him. She demands "the stuff" and wants to be sure it will keep away sand fleas. Sawyer agrees and adds with a hint of sarcasm, "It even has aloe." His negotiations for the trade infuriate Shannon, however, and she storms away without the spray.
6. When he decided to head off in search of water, Locke told two of the concerned survivors that, "Camp needs you two here". To whom was he speaking?

Answer: Sayid Kate

While Jack is away in the jungle, Sayid and Kate team up to lead the camp and locate the missing water. They find Sun and Jin with empty bottles, and once again trace it back to Sawyer (mistakenly). With his crude humor, Sawyer labels Kate as the "new sheriff in town" and unknowingly tosses her the badge belonging to the Marshal.
7. Jack asked Locke how those at camp were faring without him. Which did Locke NOT use to describe their condition?

Answer: Scared

After insisting that he "knew where to look" and leaving to search for water, Locke "coincidentally" arrived just in time to save Jack from the edge of a cliff. (Jack's reaction showed that he was near delirious.) The two conversed in the jungle as Locke collected dew drops from the leaves nearby. Locke explained what Jack had seen as the "white rabbit", which couldn't be caught. Jack insisted that it was impossible that his father actually be there, but Locke was persuasive in accepting the impossible to be real on the island.

The two different views mirror that which is again discussed in the final episode. In fact, Locke repeats the words nearly verbatim in this episode when he questions, "But what if everything that happened here happened for a reason?" He describes seeing the "eye if the island" as "beautiful". (The way in which he uses the word nearly suggests that what he saw was not described by beautiful, but that he had seen "beautiful" itself.)
8. Jack's father's body was found in an alley after suffering a fatal heart attack. Where, exactly, was this alley located?

Answer: Kings Cross

A very interesting location, Kings Cross is notorious in Sydney for the "nightlife", which includes many bars and clubs. Yet, the name rests in ironic comparison to the name "Christian Shepard", and what this man really represents. There appear to be many clues behind this, which is brought into clarity in later episodes that further reveal the dynamic relationship between Jack and his father (and the events which led Jack to Australia, and the doomed flight.) Jack was coerced by his mother into following his father when she accusingly reminded him of what he had done.

It seemed that Jack was still chasing his father on the island, but the question of whether or not he was actually there is questionable.
9. Does Boone speak to Jack after Jack reappears from the jungle that night?

Answer: No

Jack comes back just in time to halt a fight between Charlie and Boone after it was discovered that Boone had taken the water (with the intention of protecting it). Although Boone had been eager to place blame on Jack for failing to save Joanna (most likely feeling guilty that he had been rescued instead), Jack told the crowd that Boone had tried to save Joanna and should not hold blame. Jack once again regained leadership of the group, organizing a trip to the cave for water in the morning, and insisted that it was necessary that everyone work together and not alone. Boone was silent and did not speak to Jack, though was approached by Sawyer as he sat alone on the beach. (Sawyer kindly informed Boone that Boone was now the most hated of the survivors.) The circumstances ended well for Boone this time (as far as being alive) but in a later episode "Do No Harm" Jack is once again faced with saving Boone's life- and does not succeed.

Many changes in character personality and relationship would take place between then and this episode, and the survivors would grow much closer as time went on.
10. In his final flashback of the episode, Jack remembers being in the airport and pleading with the ticket agent to allow his father's coffin to clear customs. Meanwhile, another Oceanic flight was being announced over the P.A. to which location?

Answer: Singapore

Jack had been crying by the campfire, remembering when he finally found his father in Sydney, when a very peculiar noise revealed the shadowy figure nearby again. (It was the sound of ice cubes clinking, as if in a glass.) Jack followed with a flaming torch, and found the cave.

Inside was a running waterfall of fresh water, pieces of the plane wreckage, several china dolls, and his father's coffin. (When staring at the coffin he remembers the airport, and the announcement saying, "9:40 for Oceanic Flight 125 nonstop to Singapore leaving from Gate 14." Note that Jack tells Chrissy he wants to land in sixteen hours, while Boone and Shannon referred to the flight as fifteen hours. Both numbers are included in Hurley's "cursed" list.) For some reason, Jack decided to open the coffin and found it to be empty.

The question- was the White Rabbit actually on the mysterious island?
