Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How did Locke get Charlie's drugs?

Answer: Charlie gave them to him

Charlie turned the stash over to Locke in previous episode, "House Of The Rising Sun", so that he could get his guitar back. (He now regretted that decision.) At the beginning of this episode, Charlie was running from the boar, which became trapped in Locke's net. (How did Locke do that?) It seems everyone who is chased by "the monster" is running from something in their past. Charlie asked Locke to just destroy the stash and Locke refused, saying that he would not because then Charlie would not have a choice. "Life is all about making choices," he explained.

He added that the ability to make choices was the difference between you (Charlie) and him (the boar). And then he killed it.
2. How did Locke say Sawyer could have timed the bottle rocket to explode?

Answer: Using a cigarette

Locke presumed that Sawyer was the one who attacked Sayid to stop him from getting a signal on the transceiver. Sayid said that could not be, because the rocket had been fired from too far away and Sawyer could never run that far so fast. Locke replied that anyone who watched television knew how to delay the rocket... use a cigarette.
3. Where was Charlie in the first flashback?

Answer: In church

The episode focused mainly on Charlie's past, involving the rock band he and his brother were in. The flashbacks revealed that his older brother was influenced by the crowds and addiction, which in turn affected Charlie later. In the first flashback Charlie was in church making a confession and he yelled at his brother for putting his feet up in church.
4. What was Charlie's brother Liam's daughter named?

Answer: Megan

In Charlie's flashback, he went to visit his older brother about being signed with the band. His brother, however, was now a father and said he didn't want to go back to the band. He commented on how he had missed his daughter Megan's birth.
5. When Sayid organized the "triangular" method to try to find the source of the signal, who was supposed to be the last to shoot their bottle rocket?

Answer: Kate

Kate, Boone, and Sayid were supposed to set off the rockets. However, Boone and Kate went to dig for Jack in the cave, leaving Shannon and Sawyer in charge. Sayid was supposed to set the first rocket off at five o'clock, then Shannon, and finally Kate so he knew the transceiver could be turned on.
6. What did Charlie say the inside of the cave reminded him of?

Answer: Confessional

While in the cave rescuing Jack, Charlie noted that it was so dark and reminded him of the confessional at church. He was about to tell Jack what his confession would be, when he saw the moth fly out. Breaking out of the cave symbolized Charlie breaking his addiction, like the moth breaking out of its cocoon.
7. How many times did Charlie ask Locke for his stash back?

Answer: Three

Locke told Charlie he would let him ask for the drugs three times, and then he would give it back. Locke would not get rid of the drugs himself, because then Charlie wouldn't have a choice. Charlie told Locke he'd made his decision and asked a third time. He gazed at the bag, then threw it into the fire.
8. Why did Locke give Sayid a knife?

Answer: In case he was attacked again

Locke seemed quite sure of himself that Sawyer was the one responsible for attacking Sayid because he was benefiting from their stay on the island and had no reason to want to leave. He gave Sayid a pocket knife so that he would be ready "in case there is a next time".
9. Why did Charlie say he should go into the cave after Jack?

Answer: He was alone on the island

The others that were willing to help out all had someone else to look out for on the island... Sun had a husband, Boone had a sister, and Michael a son. Charlie insisted that they let him do it because he was all alone on the island and would not leave anyone behind if something were to happen to him.
10. Michael wanted to check out the cave before the others started to dig. How long had he been doing construction work?

Answer: Eight

While the others were going to dig in to the heap of collapsed boulders, Michael wanted to check it out to see which parts were steady enough and where it was too dangerous because the walls could buckle. When asked how he knew this, Michael replied, "Eight years of architect training!"
11. What injury did Jack sustain when the cave collapsed?

Answer: Dislocated shoulder

While inside one of the "safe" caves where some of the islanders were supposed to relocate, the rocks collapsed and left Jack pinned outside. While the others dug outside, Charlie managed to come in through a tunnel and rescue Jack. He had another test to prove himself, though, when he had to assist Jack in popping his dislocated shoulder back into the socket.
12. Why did Locke refuse to help the moth out of the cocoon?

Answer: It would be too weak to survive

Locke told Charlie about how moths are the more beautiful creatures (compared to butterflies) because they spin the silk. He showed a cocoon in which a moth was struggling to be free. "Struggle is nature's way of strengthening," he explained.
It seems Charlie is stronger than he thought, someone is not who they say they are, and Locke has unknown motives for helping anyone at all. "The Moth" is just one piece of the puzzle to reveal what this all really means!
13. Jin told Sun that the clothes she was wearing were indecent, and to cover herself up. How did she respond?

Answer: She told him it was too hot

As their island stay grows longer, the once quiet and obedient Sun has become much more assertive and involved with the other castaways. She is even learning English. So when her husband Jin, while washing his infected wrist, demanded that she cover herself Sun simply told him that it was too hot. (Even in the shade, you can imagine.)
14. What did Kate give Jack?

Answer: A sling

While they were at the campfires, Kate brought Jack a sling that she had made for his injured arm. He smiled and told her that it was his first sling.
15. How many times did Charlie see the moth fly?

Answer: Twice

The moth was a very powerful symbol throughout this episode, holding a very special message. In its own way, the moth revealed information about the past secrets of the characters that are coexisting on the mysterious island on which they crash landed, as well as their different perspectives. Charlie saw the cocoon when Locke first showed it to him, but he didn't "see" the moth fly until he and Jack were trapped in the cave (he may have actually been hallucinating from lack of oxygen and/or his addiction problem).

The moth not only showed him "the light" (symbol!) but also a way out of the trap he was in. And at the end Charlie saw the moth fly into the night after he made the decision to burn the drugs. The only question: where was it leading to now?
