Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first scene, an announcement comes over the PA system that it's time for the 4077th members to collect their pay and that they please proceed to the mess tent in a calm and orderly fashion.Of course, they don't proceed in a calm and orderly fashion and they "stampede" to the mess tent. They stand at one of the mess tent doors while paymaster Hawkeye and Radar come through another. After Radar finally stops reading the rules the paymaster must follow, Hawkeye tells Radar to "bring in the first contestant." What is his rank and name?

Answer: Private Frank Daily

After Daily gives Hawkeye his name, he also gives him his serial number. I wonder if someone's serial number has to be given in all branches of the service in order for them to get paid?
2. After the first person is paid, he salutes Hawkeye. Does Hawkeye return the salute with a salute of his own?

Answer: No

No, he just waved. In all the time that "M*A*S*H" was on the air, the only three people that Hawkeye ever saluted were Radar Colonel Potter and Colonel Blake.
3. After Hawkeye finally finishes paying the enlisted personnel and Radar pays the officers, Hawkeye makes himself a hot dog. After he smells it,he puts it down. He then informs Radar there's some leftover money. How much is leftover?

Answer: $10

Hawkeye tells Radar to do whatever he wants with the leftover money. Radar tells Hawkeye that whenever there are leftover funds certain forms have to be filled out. Hawkeye ignores this rule and tells Radar no way. Did you ever notice Hawkeye always smelled his food before he ate it? He even made BJ smell his food once!
4. Hawkeye told Radar that not only would he like to thank the army for dragging him out of his bed back home, he would also like to thank them for disrupting his civilian practice and making him lose a large amount of money in the process. How much money does Hawkeye say the army owes him?

Answer: $3,000

If Hawkeye was in this position these days, I'm sure the army would owe him a lot more than $3,000!
5. Let's go over to the Officer's Club, where Hawkeye and one of the nurses are trying to have some romantic time. They're having a drink when Radar enters with the funds Hawkeye said the army owed him plus the leftover money. He hands Hawkeye the money-laden pouch. Hawkeye then tells the bartender, Mr. Kwang, that he'd like to buy everyone at the 4077th a drink.

Answer: False

Actually, he told Mr. Kwang that he'd like to buy Korea a drink.
6. Payday at the 4077th seems to be an ideal time for the local merchants and peddlers to sell their wares. In this episode, the peddler is one Mr. Quoc. Which "M*A*S*H" guest star plays him?

Answer: Jack Soo

That's right, it was Jack Soo of "Barney Miller" fame. Soo was also in the episode "To Market, To Market".
7. Mr. Quoc's first stop is the Swamp. Frank is the only one there. Mr. Quoc and Frank haggle over a beautiful set of pearls until they agree on a price. Mr. Quoc also sells Frank an imitation set for a very low price. Next stop: Margaret's tent. She asks Mr. Quoc if he has something pretty. He shows her another set of the pretty pearls. He keeps lowering the price but she still can't afford them. He tells her that he'll get her an imitation set that "The oysters were glad to get rid of." He informs her that he sold the last set to a Major a couple of tents down and that this Major had what they call in Korea "A real fertilizer face." Of course Margaret knew it was Frank from this description! Anyway, Frank gives the fakes to Margaret and asks her if there's any way to tell fake pearls from real ones. She says there is. What was the way you could tell?

Answer: Rubbing them against your teeth

Of course Margaret made this up, but Frank was dopey enough to buy it! I love the part where Frank sticks his wedding ring under Mr. Quoc's nose and says, "See this? Do you know what this is?" And Mr. Quoc replies, "24 karat cheap." Anyway, Frank was so worried that Margaret might discover the pearls were fake (when she already knew) that he switched the fake ones with the real ones while Margaret was in the shower! She had the fake set with her in the shower.

It's funny at the end when Frank is rubbing the fakes against his teeth!
8. Hawkeye gave the money to Father Mulcahy.

Answer: True

What a guy, huh? If you recall, the good Father was having a rummage sale to benefit the orphans. That didn't work, so he joined in a poker game, which was the favorite way of the 4077th members to lose their money as soon as they got it. That didn't work either. Hawkeye and his date are still in the Officer's Club when we hear Father Mulcahy playing the piano badly, which is the only way he ever played it! Hawkeye asks him what he's playing. Mulcahy replies that it's a little ragtime he plays now and then. Hawkeye says, "You know, for a priest you have no sense of rhythm." Mulcahy replies, "It lightens the load." That's when Hawkeye gives him the money.
9. Finish this quote by Hawkeye: "Don't say it. It makes me go - all over."

Answer: Spencer Tracy

He said this after giving Father Mulcahy the money. Father Mulcahy said, "Can you imagine the look on the children's faces when they hear the news?" He also told Hawkeye there may be a sainthood in this for him. Hawkeye said he "Could see himself on dashboards all over America."
10. Eldon Quick, a frequent "M*A*S*H" guest star, played what character in this episode?

Answer: Captain Sloan

I just made Banks and Willis up. Captain Sloan was also in the episode "The Incubator". Captain Pratt was in the episode "The Late Captain Pierce".
11. Mr. Quoc also paid a visit to the poker game. What did he try to sell there?

Answer: A ring

Henry told Mr. Quoc he'd give him $50 for it. Mr. Quoc said, "You kidding? The reward's worth more than that!"
12. Trapper wasn't doing too well at the poker game either. He went back to the Swamp to try and convince Hawkeye to lend him money. He didn't help his case by interrupting Hawkeye's date. Hawkeye refused to lend him money, saying Trapper had all the luck of a Titanic survivor. Trapper told Hawkeye that he was probably right and that he was going to go back to the game and fold his hand. But instead, he took something of value of Hawkeye's. What was it?

Answer: Hawk's watch

I love the part where Hawkeye tells Trapper, "You put change in a parking meter and it comes up three lemons!"
13. When Hawkeye and his date are in the Swamp, they keep getting interrupted by various people. The visiting captain is the last of these people, and the nurse that is Hawkeye's date gets fed up and leaves. After Hawkeye and the visiting captain introduce themselves to each other, the visiting captain asks Hawkeye how long he thought he could get away with bilking the army, as if anyone thought they could. What was Hawkeye's response?

Answer: "How long have you had this delusion that you're human?"

Father Mulcahy and Radar came in about then. Hawkeye told Father Mulcahy that the captain was responsible for the money that was helping the orphans. Father Mulcahy thanked the captain. The captain said that he wanted the money back now or Father Mulcahy would be preaching from the stockade! What a swell guy!
14. Hawkeye pays back the money the army "gave" him. How?

Answer: He gives the captain Trapper's poker winnings

Trapper told Hawkeye he took his watch in order to get back in the poker game. The visiting captain asked Hawkeye if he wanted Trapper arrested and that it would be no extra trouble. Since Trapper won a big pot of money because he took Hawkeye's watch, Hawkeye claims the pot as his!
15. Henry said that he wished someone would tell him what's going on. Radar explained right away.

Answer: False

Nope! He told Henry he would tell him later. Henry said, "You always say that Radar, but you never do." That's all! I hope that you enjoyed my quiz! Bye!
