Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the 'Chief Surgeon Who?' episode, we find Trapper soaking his feet, Frank writing form letters to his patients back home, and Hawkeye enjoying a drink. Frank, as usual, is irritated at the boys and asks them if they don't have 'anything better to do than lie around and ____ gin.' Fill in the blank.

Answer: Swill

Offended, Hawkeye exclaims, "Swill gin!? Sir, I have sipped, lapped and taken gin intravenously but I have never swilled gin!"
2. After Trapper and Hawkeye ridicule Frank for his form letters, Frank retorts by bragging about his successful practice and his possessions. Specifically, what does he claim he has waiting for him at home?

Answer: A $35,000 house and 2 cars

In Henry's office, it becomes a $35,000 car and 2 houses, according to Hawkeye.
3. Henry is confronted with the ego problem in the operating room when Frank decides to press charges of insubordination. To solve the problem, Henry decides to make Hawkeye chief surgeon, much to Frank's chagrin. In the midst of explaining his decision, he claims that Hawkeye is specially certified in which area?

Answer: Chest surgery

Hawkeye is actually certified in chest AND general surgery according to Henry. This is interesting because in the movie Trapper was the chest cutter...I think they should have been a little more balanced early on!
4. During the bacchanal that follows Hawkeye's selection as chief surgeon, Trapper hands him the 'trappings' of his office, namely his orb and his scepter. Which of the following are Hawkeye's 'orb' and 'scepter'?

Answer: Volleyball and toilet plunger

As can be expected, only the highest class objects can be found in a M*A*S*H episode! By the way, do you recall that in the movie Trapper was the chief surgeon?
5. Which general does Margaret summon in order to protest Henry's decision about the chief surgeon?

Answer: General Barker

Another one of Margaret's old friends in high places!
6. The General arrives at the 4077th at 2 AM and makes his way around the camp. Which of these situations does he not encounter?

Answer: Margaret and Frank kissing in the supply tent

The General becomes angry at Hawkeye's insubordinate behavior. He believes Hawkeye should be tending to his patient while Hawkeye believes he can beat a pair of twos. General Barker walks out in a huff searching for Henry, and on his way encounters the M*A*S*H camp at its nutty best! You may not have recognized the scene between Ginger and Spearchucker, it's one of those that they delete in order to shorten it for a usual half-hour airing, but it can be found in the original uncut episode...buy the video or DVD!
7. Searching for Henry, the general makes his way into the colonel's office only to find Radar kicked back with his feet up on the desk. The General catches Radar doing all but which of the following?

Answer: Eating a leg of lamb

In these early episodes, Radar isn't quite so innocent, as the cigar and the brandy would suggest. However, he did seem to enjoy the youthful thrill of a good comic book. The leg of lamb is an allusion to the longjohn episode...I hope that didn't throw you off!
8. 'Chief Surgeon Who?' marks the very first appearance of which beloved M*A*S*H character?

Answer: Corporal Klinger

After General Barker angrily departs from the Swamp, Klinger confronts him in full military uniform! Unfortunately, it's a woman's uniform...which isn't a surprise to any of us! When General Barker asks Henry, 'Do you realize you have a man on duty wearing a skirt?' Henry replies, 'Well luckily he has the legs for it, sir!' Later, Klinger appears again in front of the general, this time stark naked.
9. Twice in this episode, Hawkeye refers to the General as which of the following?

Answer: Dad

I guess that was the hip (and somewhat disrespectful?) way of referring to folks of the older generation back in those times.
10. After the general sees what a high quality surgeon Hawkeye is, Henry asks him what will be done the next time Frank comes to complain. How does the general respond?

Answer: 'Give him a high colonic and send him on a ten-mile hike.'

Trapper adds 'with full pack' to which General Barker responds, 'Good touch!'
