Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Virtually this entire episode is filmed within the operating room. At the beginning of this marathon session of surgery, the typical banter ensues. Trapper is surprised to find that one of his patients is a 'repeater'. What other doctor does he suspect previously worked on his patient?

Answer: Hawkeye

Trapper claims that the suture marks in the patient look like Hawkeye's stitches. Hawkeye responds, 'If they look like stitches, he isn't mine.'
2. Frank makes his grand entrance into the O.R. with his usual charming demeanor leading the way. He complains that some important and sentimental item of his has been stolen, but which ones?

Answer: Scrub brush

Specifically, Frank apparently has a tortoise shell scrub brush that he uses before performing surgery. The brush was a gift of his mother, thus the sentimental feelings attached. No evidence is given as to the location of said scrub brush.
3. Hawkeye has an unusual patient towards the beginning of the operating session, a soldier from Africa who can't seem to speak a lick of English. From what country does this soldier hail?

Answer: Ethiopia

Ethiopia and South Africa were the only two African countries to send troops to Korea during the Korean War. This soldier speaks to Hawkeye twice in his native language, namely Amharic, but there is no translation of what he says. Hawkeye does make reference to 'Haile Salassie' (longtime emperor) in his comment back to the Ethiopian soldier.
4. Taking a break from the O.R., Hawkeye sits on a bench in the waiting room only to find Radar with a fresh cup of coffee. Radar then asks Hawkeye what he'd like to eat. What is Hawkeye's response?

Answer: Maine lobster

Hawkeye uses the coffee to shave because all the hot water in the camp has been expended. More specifically about Hawkeye's order, he asks for the maine lobster with drawn butter, bed spring fries anda liter of the house wine. Hawkeye shows his appreciation to Radar by claiming that the two things he will miss most about Korea are the young lad and dysentery.
5. In the operating room, Henry seems to be having difficulty holding his instruments. What does Hawkeye think the problem might be?

Answer: Arthritis

After Henry drops his third instrument of the operating session, Hawkeye insists that Henry is in the early stages of arthritis. 'This could be your ticket home', exclaims Hawkeye. Oddly enough, Henry claims that he doesn't want to go home, that he feels more useful in Korea. Too bad McLean Stevenson didn't feel the same way...
6. Frank is under tremendous pressure, and it nearly costs him dearly in the O.R. What organ does he almost remove from a patient, but is saved from making this error at the last minute by Trapper?

Answer: Kidney

Frank prepares to take out a kid's kidney, only to find out via Trapper and a handy x-ray that the young man only has one to begin with.
7. The most dramatic moment of this episode takes place when Hawkeye goes into a soldier's chest and performs an open-heart massage. Is it true that Hawkeye later learns that the young man has died?

Answer: Yes

Under amazing stress, Hawkeye is able to split the lad's ribs and perform open heart massage (something he does several other times during the series) successfully on him. Though he lives through the surgery, Radar later learns through channels that the soldier has died. Trapper comments that Hawkeye bought the kid four hours that he wouldn't otherwise have had.
8. Frank and Hawkeye engage in various verbal skirmishes during the episode. In one instance, Hawkeye defends his patriotism. Which of these is not one of the great 'values' that are being promoted as part of American foreign relations?

Answer: Clean underwear

Among the items listed in Hawkeye's speech: Democracy, white bread, the American dream, freedom, achievement, hyperacidity, affluence, flatulence, technology, tension, the inalienable right to an early coronary while sitting at your desk plotting to stab your boss in the back. 'That's entertainment,' he proclaims!
9. With the doctors busy in the O.R., what does that little lifesaver Radar bring for everyone to drink?

Answer: Orange juice

'Orange juice, freshly squozen,' says the verbally deft young Corporal. 'Just pour that in any part of me,' quips Hawkeye. Later, Radar also brings hamburgers to the hungry cutters in the O.R.
10. Towards the end of the episode, what character utters the now legendary line: 'Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice: Pull down your pants and slide on the ice.'?

Answer: Sidney Freedman

Sidney Freedman takes an unexpected turn in the O.R. room as a surgeon, something he hasn't done since medical school. On his way out, he utters the above quote, something he would repeat in the very last episode of 'M*A*S*H'.
