Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Return", Rumplestiltskin said that he only broke one deal in his life. To whom did he make this deal?

Answer: Baelfire

After succeeding Zoso as the Dark One, Rumplestiltskin began doing things with his powers that Baelfire didn't like. One was turning a man into a snail and squishing him for accidentally Baelfire with his cart. Baelfire wanted his father back, so he made a deal: Rumplestiltskin and him would travel to a land without magic (meaning he would be powerless) and in return Rumplestiltskin would get his son's happiness. Baelfire went through a magical portal, but Rumplestiltskin was so attached to his powers that he didn't join him.

This was said to be the only deal that Rumplestiltskin broke.
2. In "The Crocodile", Rumplestiltskin and William Smee made a deal. What was unique about this deal?

Answer: The deal was never completed.

Rumplestiltskin hoped to find a way to be reunited with his son. William Smee heard of this and told him that he could get a magic bean that would allow Rumplestiltskin to get what he wanted. In return, Rumplestiltskin would make Smee a boy ago. If he failed, then Rumplestiltskin would cause Smee to age until he died. The bean ended up in the possession of Milah and Captain Hook. Neither of them handed it over to Rumplestiltskin but rather Captain Hook used it to travel to Neverland, where he could find a way to get revenge on Rumplestiltskin for killing Milah and cutting off his right hand.
Smee wanted the bean but Captain Hook made him an offer. Hook would keep the bean and Smee would join his crew and head to Neverland, a place where nobody grew old. Smee accepted.
This meant that Rumplestiltskin's deal with Smee was never completed unlike almost every other deal he made.
3. Rumplestiltskin magically took which body part of the sheriff of Nottingham and offered to give it back if the sheriff revealed Robin Hood's location?

Answer: tongue

Robin Hood broke into Rumplestiltskin's castle and stole a magic wand. Rumplestiltskin wanted it back, so he and Belle traveled to Sherwood Forest where they came across the sheriff of Nottingham, who was also trying to track down Robin Hood. Rumplestiltskin made the deal that the sheriff would get something he wanted if he would divulge the location of Robin Hood.

The sheriff initially wanted a night with Belle, but Rumplestiltskin wouldn't allow it. Not getting the hint, the sheriff tried to push his offer but this caused Rumplestiltskin to magically remove his tongue.

Therefore, the sheriff agreed to have his tongue back.
4. Rumplestiltskin made a deal with two people that resulted in him getting a strand of hair from each person. Who were these two people?

Answer: Snow White and Prince James

Snow White heard about Prince Charming's marriage to Princess Abigail. Since Snow was in love with Charming, she wanted to find a way to get rid of her feelings. Red Riding Hood told her about Rumplestiltskin, so Snow decided to visit him. He offered her a potion that would cause her to forget Charming and in return, Snow would give him a strand of her hair. Although initially confused about this request, she allowed it.
Later, after the wedding was called off, Prince Charming tried to find Snow White but when he couldn't, he visited Rumplestiltskin. If Charming would give Rumplestiltskin his cloak, then he would be provided with Snow's location. Rumplestiltskin didn't want the cloak but rather a strand of hair on that cloak.
With both these strands of hair, Rumplestiltskin could bottle true love, which would prove important, because it would allow Snow and Charming's daughter, Emma, to break the Dark Curse. By dabbing the potion on the parchment containing the curse, Emma was able to do just that.
5. One of the last deals Rumplestiltskin made prior to the Dark Curse being cast was with Regina. Prior to answering Regina's question, Rumplestiltskin asked for something. What was it?

Answer: a comfortable life

The Evil Queen wanted to go to a land where she would be the only with a happy ending, so she cast the Dark Curse. However, it failed, and since she did not know why that happened, she decided to visit Rumplestiltskin. A deal was made: in this new land, Rumplestiltskin would have a comfortable life and if he ever said "please" to Regina, then she must do whatever he said.

In return, he would explain what went wrong. Since Regina believed he would not retain his memories, she had no problem to his terms. Rumplestiltskin explained that she had to use the heart of the thing she loved most.

This heart was not from her prized steed as she initially believed but came from her father. She stole her father's heart and was able to successfully cast the curse.
6. In the Enchanted Forest, Cinderella traded her first-born to Rumplestiltskin in exchange for a night at the ball. The deal wasn't completed but rather nullified. Who helped nullify the deal?

Answer: Emma

Cinderella wished to go to the ball, so when Rumplestiltskin appeared, she made a deal with him: she would go to the ball and he would get her firstborn. However, she did not want to part with her as-of-yet unborn child, so she tricked Rumplestiltskin by having him sign a new contract with a pen that was infected with squid ink.

This caused Rumplestiltskin to be immobile and allowed him to be placed in a prison. When the curse hit, Rumplestiltskin (now called Mr. Gold) remembered his deal with Cinderella (now called Ashley Boyd).

He listed the help of Emma to get the baby. When Emma realized it was a baby Mr. Gold wanted, she nullified the original deal and made a new one: Ashley would keep the baby and Emma would owe Mr. Gold a favor. This favor turned out to be reuniting Mr. Gold with his lost son.
7. Mr. Gold helped Regina frame Mary Margaret Blanchard for the supposed murder of which person?

Answer: Kathryn

Regina did not like Mary Margaret Blanchard, because Mary Margaret was Snow White in the Enchanted Forest, and she had told Regina's mother a secret that Regina wanted to stay secret. In Storybrooke, Regina didn't want Mary Margaret to be in a relationship with David Nolan, so she came up with a plan to have David's wife, Kathryn, be murdered and frame Mary Margaret. To help her with this plan, she asked for Mr. Gold's help.

He agreed to have something tragic happen to Kathryn and Mary Margaret to be blamed for it.

In return, Regina, as mayor of Storybrooke, would remove the assault charges Moe French made on him. In an earlier episode ("Skin Deep"), Mr. Gold assaulted Moe because he believed Moe was responsible for the death of Belle (who loved Mr. Gold in the Enchanted Forest) and also because he stole a chipped teacup which was the only reminder he had of Belle. The assault charges were dropped, but Kathryn was kidnapped rather than killed.

As Mr. Gold mentioned to Regina, the deal was for something tragic to happen, and kidnapping was tragic, even though Regina took the deal to mean that the "something tragic" would be Kathryn's death.
8. Almost always would Mr. Gold make a deal and want something in return. What was one example of a deal in which this was not true?

Answer: Mr. Gold being Mary Margaret's lawyer

Mary Margaret was blamed for the murder of Kathryn Nolan. To help her out, Mr. Gold offered to be her lawyer, since he was so adept at contracts. Mary Margaret offered him money, but he wasn't interested in any payment; he said that he was merely invested in her future. Once Kathryn was found alive and Regina had someone else (Sidney Glass) confess, the charges against Mary Margaret were dropped. Another example was when Mr. Gold gave Henry a necklace that helped him control his nightmares. Henry had experienced nightmares in a burning room, and when his arm in the dream was burnt so was his actual arm. Mr. Gold wanted nothing in return, because this deal was for Henry.
9. Which villain made a deal with Mr. Gold that he would learn the location of his son if he didn't interfere with this villain's plans?

Answer: Cora

Having been a student of Rumplestiltskin's, Cora knew what he was capable of. She did not wish for him to interfere with her plan to bring her daughter, Regina, over to her side. Therefore, she made a deal with Mr. Gold: he would not interfere with her plan and she would give him a crystal ball that would help him locate his son.
Mr. Gold was able to use it, and with the help of Emma and Henry, traveled to Manhattan where he was reunited with Baelfire, now going by the name of Neal Cassidy and the man who ended up being Henry's father.
10. Captain Hook made a deal with Mr. Gold: Hook would get his hand reattached and Hook would keep which of Mr. Gold's secrets?

Answer: He gave Belle a fake dagger.

Emma asked Captain Hook on a date, and he wanted to embrace Emma with both hands instead of just one. Mr. Gold did so but warned him that the severed hand belonged to the man Hook once was (a villain) and not the reformed person he is now. In return, Hook would remain silent on the fact that Mr. Gold gave Belle a fake dagger instead of the real dagger that belonged to the Dark One. Hook started acting violently and believed it was his newly attached hand that caused this, so he made a new deal with Mr. Gold: Hook would have his hand removed and Mr. Gold would get his help in absorbing magic into a special hat.
