Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Welcome to the rainforests of Costa Rica for round one of the "Monster Bug Wars"! Please welcome our contestants for this evening, the sunburst raspy cricket and the leaf-tailed mantis! And the winner is...?

Answer: mantis

The winner of our first battle is... the leaf-tailed mantis! This battle can be seen in "Monster Bug Wars" episode 6, "Super Slayers". This episode is featured in "Monster Bug Wars" season two.

Like its relatives, the leaf-tailed mantis relies on its camouflage to hide it not only from predators but also from potential prey. It sits in the leaves of a tree or bush with its two front legs raised. When a prey item walks past, the front legs snap forward, impaling the prey on their sharp spikes.
2. We're in the humble Australian backyard for round two of the "Monster Bugs Wars"! Please welcome our contestants for this evening, two lovely young ladies, the brown house spider and the red-back spider! Who wins?

Answer: Brown house spider

The winner of our second battle is...the brown house spider! This battle can be seen in "Monster Bug Wars" episode 2, "Enemy Empire". This episode is featured in "Monster Bug Wars" season one.

Both the red-back and the brown house spider can be found living in quiet, dark places including backyard sheds and empty plant-pots. They build tangled, messy webs and feed on a variety of insects. The females are larger than the males, sometimes measuring upto a centimetre in length.

The easiest way to distinguish a female red-back from a female brown house spider is to look for a bright red stripe. Only the female red-back will have this marking.

Answer: Yes

The winner of our eighth battle is... the army ants! This battle can be seen in "Monster Bug Wars" episode 2, "Blood on the Forest Floor". This episode is featured in "Monster Bug Wars" season two.

10. We return to Central America for the final round of the "Monster Bug Wars"! Please welcome our contestants for this evening, the common desert centipede and the desert trapdoor spider! Does the desert trapdoor spider kill the common desert centipede?

Answer: No

The winner of our final battle is... the common desert centipede! This battle can be seen in "Monster Bug Wars" episode 2, "Enemy Empire". This episode is featured in "Monster Bug Wars" season one.

How to tell the difference between a centipede and a millipede:

Step one: Look at the shape of the body. Is it round like a cylinder or is it flat and wide? If it's a cylinder shape, you've got a millipede. If it's flat and wide, you've got a centipede.

Step two: Look at the legs. A centipede will only have one pair of legs on each body segment while a millipede will have two. It's also worth noting that centipedes don't just use their legs for walking. The two front legs act as pincers and are used for injecting venom into their prey.
