Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who among the following was NOT an actual character in the superhero spoof "The Mighty Heroes"?

Answer: Bicycle Repair Man

Created by Ralph Bakshi ("Fritz the Cat" and the first animated "Spider-Man"), Terrytoons Productions "The Mighty Heroes" debuted in 1966. Herschel Bernardi (actor and voice of Charlie Tuna) and Lionel Wilson (Tom Terrific) provided the voices.

The other 'real' characters in the series were Tornado Man and Rope Man. The show lasted only one season (20 episodes), but were later syndicated in the 1970s and 1980s. The series was published (four issues) as a comic book in 1967.

Bicycle Repair Man is an hilarious character from "Monty Pythons Flying Circus".
2. Whose 'theme' or favorite song was "My Darling Clementine"?

Answer: Huckleberry Hound

"Huckleberry Hound" debuted in 1958 and was the second series in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon 'toon-theon' that included other luminaries such as Yogi Bear and Pixie and Dixie, among others.

Voiced by prolific animation voice talent Daws Butler, Huckleberry was the first animated series to win an Emmy (1959-60 season). The show produced a total of 55 episodes and, according to Don Markstein's Toonopedia (http://www.toonopedia.com/), continues to sell well in video.
3. Although only 17 episodes were made of the 1967 Jay Ward cartoon "George of the Jungle", it remained popular enough to inspire a movie. Who played George in the 1997 film of the same name?

Answer: Brendan Fraser

"George of the Jungle", an obvious Tarzan spoof, was the first half-hour offering with completely new characters from the Jay Ward studios since "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" debuted in 1959. The cartoon cast included George's girlfriend Ursula (whom George, a terminally stupid guy, called 'fella'), his elephant Shep (whom George always thought was a dog) and Ape his intelligent simian companion (voiced by John Cleese in the movie).

In 1998, "George of the Jungle" (the film) won an ASCAP award and received nominations for the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film and Best Actor (Brendan Fraser, "Gods and Monsters", 1998; "The Mummy", 1999) from the Blockbuster Awards. Not bad for a cartoon with only 17 episodes! (Fraser also played the title character in the 1999 live-action film "Dudley Do-Right".)

Fair warning: If you remember the theme song for "George of the Jungle" and start singing it to yourself, it may never go away...:)
4. What character started out splitting his time slot with "Secret Squirrel" before Hanna-Barbera spun-off the character (their first 'superhero') in 1967?

Answer: Atom Ant

"Up and at 'em, Atom Ant!" was this character's signature phrase. The creatively titled "Atom Ant/Secret Squirrel Show" debuted in 1966 and, as an hour show, also featured other characters such as Precious Pupp, Hillbilly Bears and Winsome Witch. The pair shared a comic book published by Archie Comics in 1966, and Atom Ant was featured alone in a 1966 Gold Key comic, as well as on children's clothing and toys (collectors take note!).

Don Messick (Ricochet Rabbit) and Howard Morris (Jughead of the animated Archie series) shared Atom Ant's voice duties.
5. This cartoon, that debuted in 1959 and continued to air throughout the 1960s, will be remembered more for its creatively low-budget animation (e.g., still drawings with real human lips), than for being probably the first televised cartoon to be truly adventure based. Who was the eponymous star of this series?

Answer: Clutch Cargo

I had forgotten about this cartoon until we lived in metro Detroit for a few years where there's a Clutch Cargo night club in the area. According to toonopedia.com: "The animation, if you're generous enough to call it that, was so limited, that for many, the amazing spectacle of it seems to have blotted out every other aspect of the show."

Created by Clark Haas for Cambria Productions, his only other television animation credit is "Space Angel". Clutch had a young sidekick, Spinner. Despite its obvious production flaws, 52 five-minute episodes were made and rerun on different kid's shows for many years. Both Conan O'Brian and "Spongebob Squarepants" use the 'real lips' idea--possibly as an homage to Clutch?
6. Which of the following was NOT a member of Top Cat's Hogey's Alley gang?

Answer: Twinkle Toes

"Top Cat" debuted on ABC in prime time in September 1961. It did not achieve the popularity of Hanna-Barbera's other prime time animated show "The Flintstones", and the next year TC ("whose good friends get to call him TC, providing it's with dignity"--from the theme song) moved to the Saturday morning line up.

Like "The Flintstones", "Top Cat" was based on a another popular 1950s sitcom "You'll Never Get Rich", probably better known by the name of its main character, Sgt. Bilko (Phil Silvers). Even TC's friend Benny the Ball was voiced by Maurice Gosfield, who played Doberman, Bilko's buddy, on whom Benny the Ball was based.

The 30 episodes of "Top Cat" were recycled on Saturdays from 1962-69, but I disagree with Toonopedia that says: "...Top Cat never did become one of Hanna-Barbera's superstars, and is today the least well-remembered of their 1960s prime-time animated sitcoms."

I personally loved the show and an original colored Ceil of the series is the only memorabilia of that type I own! :)

"He's the most tip top, Top Cat!"
7. Who was the name of the antagonist of the mouse heroes Pixie and Dixie, whose catch phrase was "I hates those meeses to pieces!"?

Answer: Mr. Jinks, the cat

Originally airing in 1958, "Pixie and Dixie" began life as part of the "Huckleberry Hound" half hour repertoire, but later received their own show.

Hanna and Barbera were inspired to create "Pixie and Dixie" by the success of "Tom and Jerry", on which they'd also collaborated at MGM. Although the characters were voiced by well-known talents Daws Butler (Quick-Draw McGraw, Chilly Willy and Cap'n Crunch, for starters) and Don Messick (Astro, Scooby Doo, Atom Ant to name just a small few), the show never achieved the popularity of Tom and Jerry, but appeared in their own comic books, merchandising and a total of 57 episodes.
8. The Cartoon Network's series "Space Ghost Coast to Coast", part of "Adult Swim" (featuring a talk show spoof format) bears only a very small resemblance to the character's initial series first broadcast in 1966, when Space Ghost was a serious interstellar cop from the Ghost Planet who battled bad guys with the help of two young sibling companions. What were their names?

Answer: Jan and Jayce

"Space Ghost" also had another, animal, companion Blip the Monkey, and traveled the galaxy in his spaceship The Phantom Cruiser (although he could also, if necessary, fly and teleport).

Twenty-one of the original "Space Ghost" episodes were made and lasted two seasons. In 1981 a new series "Space Stars" combined the original 21 episodes with 22 new ones. Until "Space Ghost Coast to Coast" aired from 1994-2004 (98 episodes), the character made it into a few comics and as part of other shows, such as "Super TV Heroes" (1968-69).

Gary Owens, of "Laugh-In" fame, voiced the original Space Ghost.
9. "Drizzle, Drazzle, Drozzle, Drome. Time for this one to come home." If you remember those magical words, then you'll know the name of the main character of this show from Total Television that first appeared in 1960. Who was he/she?

Answer: Tooter Turtle

The moral of each Tooter Turtle (sometimes spelled 'Tutor') was always 'there's no place like home.' In each episode Tooter would run to his friend Mr. Wizard (a lizard) and beg to be transported in time to a place about which he'd just been reading. Mr. Wizard would always comply, and Tooter would always end up in a desperate situation calling "Help! Mr. Wizard!"

Of course, Tooter was then saved by the incantation "Drizzle, Drazzle, Drozzle..." and would always promise never to get in trouble again. But he always did.

"Tooter Turtle" remained alive for a number of years as part of "The King and Odie" show and then as a segment of "Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales".
10. He's been briefly mentioned in this and my previous quiz on this subject, so let's give this cartoon character a question of his own. What was the name of the cheese stealing nemesis of Klondike Kat?

Answer: Savoir Faire

Who can forget the 'cheesy' French accent in which Savoir Faire spoke his signature line: "Savoir Faire is everywhere!"

First airing in 1963, Klondike Kat, a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, tried episode after episode to foil the cunning rodent with the promise: "Klondike Kat always gets his mouse!" Klondike's boss was Major Minor and Savoir Faire received assistance from his dog, Malamutt.

Reruns of "Klondike Kat" lasted for several years as part of "Tennessee Tuxedo", "Underdog" and finally, "Go Go Gophers" in 1968. After that, Klondike seems to have disappeared from television.
