Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On "The Golden Girls", who had a cow named Alice when she was younger?

Answer: Rose

Alice was Rose's cow in Saint Olaf. Alice was brought in to replace Toby, although Toby was male, so technically would have been a bull. Saint Olaf was the almost mystical (and very strange) town in Minnesota where Rose grew up.

"The Golden Girls" was about four older women sharing a house in Miami. They were Rose (Betty White), a dim-witted native of Minnesota; Blanche (Rue McClanahan), a promiscuous southern Belle; Dorothy (Bea Arthur), a retired teacher who tended to be the voice of reason; and Sophia (Estelle Getty), Dorothy's Italian immigrant mother. The show aired from 1985 to 1992.

Rose: "I remember my first love..."
Sophia: "Let me guess... it was a cow."
Rose: "Why, yes! How did you know?"
2. In the "Shining Time Station" episode "A Cow on the Line," what engine is nearly derailed by a cattle stampede?

Answer: Edward

Edward is delivering cattle cars when he is stampeded by a herd of cows. Gordon and Henry tease Edward about the incident, but later have to deal with a cow named Bluebell and her missing calf. "Cows" or "A Cow on the Line" is part of "Impractical Jokes", episode 12 of the second season of "Shining Time Station".

Thomas was the main train on "Shining Time Station" eventually spinning off into the show "Thomas and Friends". "Shining Time Station" aired on Public Television in the United States between 1989 and 1993, and featured Ringo Starr and George Carlin as Conductors.
3. In what episode of "Star Trek: Voyager" does Tom Paris turn a girl named Maggie into a cow?

Answer: Spirit Folk

The episode "Spirit Folk" is set largely on the holodeck, in the community of Fair Haven. Tom's meddling with the holodeck to play a practical joke on Harry winds up getting them accused of witchcraft. Tom and Harry are about to be burned at the stake when Torres saves them through some technological trickery.

All of the listed episodes were from season six of "Voyager." The program ran from 1995 to 2001.
4. In Monty Python's first Bavarian television episode, they had cows performing what Shakespeare play?

Answer: The Merchant of Venice

The troupe from "Monty Python" created two episodes for Bavarian television, which aired in January of 1972. The first episode featured a group of cows in Shakespearean dress wandering around a field mooing while subtitles from "The Merchant of Venice" were shown. The scene was shot near the castle of Bad Ischl.

"The Merchant of Venice" was written between 1596 and 1599. It is most notable for the Jewish money lender Shylock, whose depiction is controversial even four centuries later. As Eric Idle pointed out, the play is extremely difficult for animals to perform, especially chickens.
5. Of the many animals who appear on "Paw Patrol" which one is a cow?

Answer: Bettina

Bettina is a cow who makes semi-regular appearances on "Paw Patrol" (2013-2018). She is a Holstein cow who wears a bell around her neck. She first appears in "Pups Fall Festival" (2013).

Daisy is a hippopotamus. She showed up twice in "Pups Save the Hippos" and "Pups Save Daring Danny's Hippo". Matea is Carlos' pet parrot. Walinda is a female walrus, the wife of Wally the Walrus. Bessie and Edwena were other cows on "Paw Patrol".

"Paw Patrol" is an animated series featuring a group of dogs who rescue people and animals. It began airing in 2013 on Nickelodeon in the United States.
6. What is the name of the curious cow who appeared on Nick Jr from 2003 to 2007?

Answer: Connie

"Connie the Cow" aired on Noggin (Nick Jr) from September 2003 until April 2007. It was produced by a Spanish-German television company. Episodes consisted of three seven minute segments in which Connie went on adventures. Mollie was Connie's mother. Maddie was a lamb with orange wool. And Patch is a playful dog.
7. What animated show has an effeminate cow among its characters?

Answer: Family Guy

Effeminate cow (voiced by Seth McFarland) and cow (which enjoys being milked) are characters on "Family Guy."

"Family Guy" began on Fox in 1999, and falling ratings led the network to cancel the show in 2001. An enthusiastic fan base brought the show back to life in 2005. The animated show centers on a very odd family in Rhode Island. Since its return, the show has tended to be in the middle of the ratings.
8. In the "South Park" episode "Ginger Cow" (2013), a practical joke by Cartman leads to peace in what troubled region?

Answer: The Middle East

In "Ginger Cow", Cartman dresses up a cow as a ginger. This is seen as a biblical prophecy of a "red cow" which leads to a peace agreement between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East. When Cartman threatens to expose the hoax, Kyle endures Cartman's ridicule in order to preserve the peace. It falls apart in the end, because... "South Park", right?

"South Park" is the brainchild of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It began airing on Comedy Central in August 1997, and has consistently been one of the network's most popular programs. Parker and Stone frequently parody current events and pop culture fads on the show.
9. What comedy series from the 1980s featured a cartoon character named "Cosmic Cow"?

Answer: Too Close for Comfort

"Too Close for Comfort" ran from 1980 to 1986. It starred Ted Knight (of "Mary Tyler Moore Show" fame) as veteran cartoonist Henry Rush, who drew a cartoon called "Cosmic Cow." Knight would often speak to a hand puppet cow to hash out story ideas. The show actually got political with "Cosmic Cow vs the Oval Office" (May 1981). The show's premise was that Knight and his wife shared a duplex with their daughters.

"Perfect Strangers" (1986-1993) featured two cousins living in Chicago. Neither was a cartoonist. "Who's The Boss" (1984-1992) starred Tony Danza as a ballplayer turned housekeeper. "Caroline in the City" (1995-1999) starred Lea Thompson as a cartoonist, but she drew people, not cows (and it was in the 1990s).
10. All of these are real episode titles from "The Amazing Race". Which one involved milking a cow?

Answer: When the Cow Kicked Me in the Head

"When the Cow Kicked Me in the Head" (2010) was the second episode of season 16. This quote came from Jody, who finished last during this episode. The episode took place in Chile, and including contestants having to milk a cow.

"He Can't Swim" was the 8th episode of season 10, aired in 2006. Much of the episode took place in Madagascar, where one of the local delicacies is cow muzzle. Eating cow lips was part of a Fast Forward for the segment.

"I'm Like An Angry Cow" (2008) was the 8th episode of season 13. This was said by Terence, one of the losing contestants this episode. Most of the episode took place in Kazakhstan, and had contestants dress up in a cow costume as part of a Detour.

"Be Safe and Don't Hit A Cow" (2013) was the seventh episode of season 22. The quote comes from Wynona. Most of the episode took place in Botswana.
