Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A BBC newsreader surprised everyone in 1976 by showing her legs and proving to everyone that she could dance. Who was this newsreader?

Answer: Angela Rippon

Angela Rippon was a prim and proper BBC newsreader when she appeared on "The Morecambe and Wise Show". When she appeared from behind the news desk, firstly it surprised everyone that she was dressed to show her legs, which was previously unknown for a BBC newsreader. Then she danced, which shocked everyone even more. The fact that she was quite a good dancer was also a surprise.
2. This politician and double Oscar-winning actress starred as Cleopatra in 1971 in one of Ernie's "plays wot he wrote". Who was she?

Answer: Glenda Jackson

Winning Oscars in 1970 for "Women in Love" and again in 1973 for "A Touch of Class", Glenda was not seen as the type of actress to perform with Morecambe and Wise, but she did and what a performance. The line "All men are fools, and what makes them so is having beauty like what I have got" not only made the sketch, but showed Glenda to have a good sense of humour.
3. This Dame of the British Empire and three-time "James Bond" theme singer performed on the Christmas show in 1971. Who was she?

Answer: Shirley Bassey

During her performance, Shirley continued to sing no matter what Eric and Ernie did to her, a true professional. After SHE LOST one of her shoes, Eric replaced it with a large Army boot with no laces. Later in the sketch the other shoe was replaced by the other boot and she walked off after completing the song in a full evening gown wearing the pair of boots.
4. Filmed in black-and-white, this Fab Foursome sang as a barbershop quartet on one of the 1963 shows. Who were they?

Answer: The Beatles

After they finished their set by singing "I Want To Hold Your Hand", they were introduced to Eric by Ernie, although Eric referred to them as "The Kay Sisters". Ernie put him right and then he referred to Ringo as "Bongo". Changing into costumes to look like a barbershop quartet, they then sang "Moonlight Bay" with Ernie. Eric in the meantime had changed and dressed like one of The Beatles.
5. What singer and "sex bomb" made an appearance on the show in 1971?

Answer: Tom Jones

Tom surprised everyone by joking around with Eric and Ernie when he arrived on stage. He then sang the song "Exactly Like You" with Eric and Ernie acting as his female backing singers. This one appearance showed he had a sense of humour and was not frightened to laugh at himself.
6. In 1969 this "Equalizer" showed us he could sing as well as act. Who was it?

Answer: Edward Woodward

It was really unexpected when Edward Woodward appeared on the show and sang "The Way you Look Tonight", as he was known for his hard man acting in series like "Callan" at the time he appeared, not as a singer.
7. This "Hammer House of Horror" actor made the first of his five appearances over the years on the July 1969 show. Who was this actor?

Answer: Peter Cushing

Peter played King Arthur in the first appearance on the show in 1969. His next couple of appearances revolved around the same part, with him returning to the show pretending he had not been paid for his first appearance and wanting his fee. When he appeared in a 1973 show, he made of point of letting the boys know he had been paid and then proceeded to dress up as a well-dressed tramp and sing "We're a Couple Of Swells" with Eric and Ernie.
8. This future knight of the realm and father to two actress daughters (Hayley and Juliet) starred in a 1971 show with Eric and Ernie. Who was he?

Answer: John Mills

Starring in another of Ernie's "plays wot he wrote" ("Escape From Stalag 54"), John Mills played a Scottish Army major and Senior British Officer in a German prisoner of war camp. His daughter Juliet had already starred in a 1969 show with Eric and Ernie.
9. The 1973 series opened with a visit from this singer, without his "Shadows", to Eric and Ernie's flat. Who was this "Bachelor Boy"?

Answer: Cliff Richard

Normally known for his pop music, Cliff joined Eric and Ernie in a musical production of one of their most memorable routines, based on "The Fleet's In". The three of them sang and danced dressed as sailors.
10. This conductor and composer, a winner of four Academy Awards and 10 Grammy Awards, surprised everyone with his 1971 appearance on the show with Eric and Ernie. Who was he?

Answer: André Previn

Eric and Ernie were both worried that as André had very little time to rehearse the sketch would not work. However the result was described by their biographer as "probably their finest moment". Previn was introduced by Ernie as "Mr Preview". The impact of the sketch was still in people's minds 25 years later, when London taxi drivers still addressed André as "Mr Preview".

He even returned for a small part as a London bus conductor on the show in 1974 as well.
