Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mulder: "I've been called a lot of things. Skeptical, however, is not one."

Answer: Mind's Eye

In the episode "Mind's Eye" (5x16) the prime suspect in a murder case is a blind woman. Mulder is the only one who believes she is innocent, which makes the investigating detective call Mulder a "skeptical guy". Mulder reacts to this accusation with the above quote.
2. Scully: "That was Detective Manners. He said they just found your bleeping UFO."

Answer: Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"

This is the fourth and last episode, which was written by Darin Morgan (3x20). Jose Chung writes science-fiction novels, and he uses Mulder and Scully as role models for his main characters. Detective Manners was named after Kim Manners, who directed many "X-Files"- episodes, and who is known for using lots of swearwords. The episode´s character has the same habit, and this explains Scully´s above remark, after she received a call from Detective Manners.
3. Mulder: "Woman, get back in here and make me a sandwich!"

Answer: Arcadia

In the episode "Arcadia" (6x13) Mulder and Scully investigate undercover as the married couple Rob and Laura Petrie (pronounced Pee-trie). The above quote is an example for Mulder's (exaggerated?) presentation of a husband.
4. Scully: "You're not gonna tell me that it's that Mexican goat sucker thing."

Answer: Bad Blood

This story (5x12) is told in retrospect by both Mulder and Scully. Each of them portrays himself/herself better than the other one. This quote is taken from Scully´s version of the story. She suspects that their new case is about El Chupacapra, a Mexican mythological creature, with which they have to deal in the episode "El Mundo Gira".
5. Mulder: "Later, dude!"

Answer: Deep Throat

During their investigation for this case (1x01) Mulder and Scully question some teenagers. In order to show how cool he is, Mulder says good-bye in his best imitation of a surfer. :-)
6. In the episode "Aubrey" (2x12) Mulder says the following: "Dreams are answers to questions we haven´t yet figured out how to ask." In another episode Scully says the exact same quote. Which episode is it?

Answer: Paper Hearts

The episode "Paper Hearts" (4x08) suggests, that Mulder´s sister Samantha was not abducted, but rather was the victim of a serial killer. Mulder's dreams play an important role in this episode.
7. Mulder to Skinner: "Sir, have I pissed you off in a way that's more than normal?"

Answer: Hollywood A.D.

This episode (7x18) was written by David Duchovny (Agent Mulder). A director, who is a friend of A.D. Walter Skinner, wants to make a movie about Mulder and Scully and their work on the X-Files. In that movie, Mulder is portrayed by Garry Shandling and Scully is portrayed by Tea Leoni. When Scully mentions that Tea Leoni seems to like Mulder, his response is:
"Oh, yeah, right. Like Tea Leoni's ever going to have a crush on me." However, this is only funny if you know that in real life David Duchovny and Tea Leoni are married and have two children!
8. Scully: "Why do I think that Charles Darwin is rolling in his grave right now?"

Answer: Leonard Betts

This is episode 4x14. Leonard Betts is a mutant, who needs cancer tumors to survive. Mulder suggests that according to natural selection Betts has adapted to the threat of cancer and made it his basis of living, which prompts Scully to the above statement.
Whenever Betts approaches a cancer patient,he does this with the words: "You have something that I need." At the end of the episode he says this to Scully, which is when we first learn that she has cancer.
9. Mulder: "Is there any way I can get it off my fingers quickly without betraying my cool exterior?"

Answer: Squeeze

This is the first episode that does not deal with aliens (1x02). It features the villain Eugene Victor Tooms, who is portrayed by Doug Hutchison. Tooms kills five people and eats their liver before building a nest, where he recovers for the next thirty years.

When Mulder and Scully search Tooms´ house, they discover a yellow substance. Mulder touches it, before Scully remarks that it is bile. He replies with the above quote.
10. Scully: "I hate to say that Mulder, but I think you just ran out of credibility."

Answer: Oubliette

When a little girl is kidnapped, Mulder believes that a young woman has a psychic connection with the victim. Scully, however, thinks that this woman is a suspect in the case, and therefore she does not agree with Mulder's theories at all, which can be seen from this quote. "Oubliette" is episode number 3x08.
11. Mulder: "Dear Diary: Today my heart lept when Agent Scully suggested spontaneous human combustion."

Answer: Trevor

In episode 6x17 Mulder and Scully try to capture an escaped prisoner. Before he escaped the prisoner killed a man by "burning" a part of his body. Scully suspects it could be spontaneous human combustion - and of course Mulder is really impressed with this theory, especially since it comes from his skeptical partner.
12. In which episode is Scully doing an imitation of the famous line from "Poltergeist": "They're heeere"?

Answer: Shadows

Mulder and Scully want to drive away in their car after questioning a suspect. But something or somebody takes control of the car, and they have an accident. Mulder thinks that it either was the woman they had just questioned and who might have psycho-kinetic power, or a poltergeist, which makes Scully do that imitation mentioned above. This is episode 1x05.
13. Mulder: "Sorry, nobody down here but the FBI´s most unwanted."

Answer: Pilot

Dana Scully has just been assigned to the X-Files, and she knocks at the door to Fox Mulder's office. Mulder answers to the knocking with the above quote, which makes this Mulder's first words on "The X-Files".
14. Scully: "I just came up with a sick theory."

Answer: Our Town

In "Our Town" (2x24) Mulder and Scully discover that several inhabitants of the town of Dudley, Arkansas suffer from Creutzfeldt- Jacob disease, which is very unusual. Scully's theory is that the chicken in the local chicken farm feed on dead people, and therefore get infected with the disease and pass it on to the people who eat the chicken.
15. Mulder: "Scully, you have to believe me. No one else on this whole damned planet does or ever will. You´re my one in ... five billion."

Answer: Folie a Deux

In "Folie a Deux" (5x19) Mulder believes that a man, whom they meet during their investigation, is in reality a monster, but only Mulder and one other man can see the monster. Scully suspects that this is a case of folie a deux (a madness shared by two people), but Mulder tries to convince her that he´s telling the truth.
16. Scully: "Please explain to me the scientific nature of the whammy."

Answer: Pusher

Mulder and Scully investigate in a murder case (3x17). The suspect is Robert Patrick Modell, who is a Pusher, which means he has the ability to make people do whatever he wants them to do only by telling them to do it. Mulder describes this process with the expression "whammy", and after Scully asks him to define that term, he replies: "I don't know, maybe, maybe it's some mental aspect of some eastern martial art. You know, the temporary suppression of the brain's chemistry, produced by a specific timbre or cadence in Modell's voice.

His voice seems to be the key." Scully is not really satisfied with this explanation and says she's "looking for an explanation a little more mundane than 'the whammy'".
17. Mulder: "I was just here... Where did I go?"

Answer: Small Potatoes

The villain in this episode (4x20)is Eddie Van Blundht, who has the ability to change his appearance. At one point of the episode, Eddie makes himself look like Mulder, and questions a woman in hospital. After he leaves, the real Mulder wants to question the same woman, who tells him the he had just been here. Mulder then asks a nurse the question stated above, in order to find out where Eddie went.

There is another memorable quote in this episode. At the very end, when Mulder visits Eddie in jail, Eddie says to Mulder: "I was born a loser, but you're one by choice. [...] You should live a little. Treat yourself. God knows I would if I were you."
18. Scully: "I'm not going to ask if you just said what I think you just said, because I know it's what you just said."

Answer: War of the Coprophages

This season three episode (3x12) deals with artificial intelligence. Mulder´s first theory in a series of mysterious deaths is that "cockroaches are mortally attacking people." No wonder that Scully is skeptical of this theory. :-)
19. Mulder: "I didn´t order room service."

Answer: Fallen Angel

Mulder investigates in a forest which has been closed to public. Of course he gets caught and put in a prison cell. When Scully comes to bust him out the next morning, he greets her with the above quote. This episode (1x09) is the first one featuring Max Fenig, one of the "X-Files" most memorable characters.
20. Scully: "Mulder, when you find me dead, my desiccated corpse propped up staring lifelessly through the telescope at drunken frat boys peeing and vomiting into the gutter, just know that my last thoughts were of you and how I'd like to kill you."

Answer: Chimera

While Mulder goes off to investigate a case involving a mysterious raven, he makes Scully observe a night club. She does not enjoy that task at all,and makes sure that Mulder knows that. However, when Mulder is stuck in his investigation, he asks Scully to join him... This is episode 7x16.
