Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Just a Ride" by Jem

Answer: "The Countdown", at the Swinger's Party

This song is first featured in "The Countdown", the New Year's episode, at the swinger's party. This song also appears in the episode "The Nana". It can be heard while Jimmy checks up on Hailey. Jem is a Welsh singer who appears on "The O.C." in the episode "The Ties That Bind" to sing during Julie and Caleb's wedding. This song can also be found on her debut CD "Finally Woken".
2. "How Good it Can Be" by The 88

Answer: "The Heights", when Ryan and Seth first arrive at school.

This song is played as we are first introduced to the school. As well, it plays while the group are stuck in traffic on their way to Los Angeles in "The L.A.". The 88 are an L.A. based band who were named the best pop/rock band by LA Weekly in 2003. This song can be found on their debut CD "Kind of Light".
3. "Move On" by Jet

Answer: "The Secret", at the end when Ryan, Marissa, Seth and Luke get ready to face the school

In this scene Luke is afraid to go back to school after everyone has found out that his dad is gay. Ryan points out that he's still "the kid from Chino that burned a house down", Marissa says she's "the girl who tried to kill herself in Mexico", while Seth is "still Seth Cohen". "Move On" can also be heard on Jet's debut album "Get Born".
4. "Orange Sky" by Alexi Murdoch

Answer: "The Homecoming", when Ryan visits his brother in prison after delivering the car

Ryan's brother, Trey, thanks Ryan and tells Ryan to leave him and Chino behind. It is time for Ryan to move on. "Orange Sky" is also heard in the episode "The Ties That Bind" while Marisa asks Ryan what he thinks of Theresa's decision. This song can also be heard in the movie "Garden State". If you like the music from "The O.C." I highly recommend the soundtrack to this movie.
5. "Caught by the River" by The Doves

Answer: "The Model Home", when Ryan, Marissa and Seth ride along the pier.

When Marissa and Seth bring Ryan supplies for his stay in the model home they realize there's no food. They all go on a quest for food and ride down the pier, while this song plays in the background. The Doves are from Manchester, England and "Caught by the River" is on their album "The Last Broadcast".
6. "Honey and the Moon" by Joseph Arthur

Answer: "Premiere", when Ryan is driven away at the end of the episode

This is the song that plays at the end of the episode while Ryan is driven away. In the first season finale they mimic this scene when Ryan is once again driven away, but this time to "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley. "Honey and the Moon" appears on singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur's album "Redemption's Son" (both the American and European versions).
7. "We Used to be Friends" by The Dandy Warhols

Answer: "The Secret", at the beginning when Seth dances before telling his dad that he is "sick"

This song is played three times during this episode. The first is before the opening credits when Seth is dancing, the second is when Seth runs into Summer and Anna together, the third is when Summer and Anna are sitting together and start to bond, much to Seth's disdain.

The Dandy Warhols are from the Portland area and "We Used to be Friends" appears on their fourth album, "Welcome to the Monkey House".
8. "Dice" by Finley Quaye and William Orbit

Answer: "The Countdown", when Ryan kisses Marissa at midnight

This is the second song from "The Countdown" to appear on "Music From the O.C. Mix 1". Not only does Ryan kiss Marissa at midnight, he also tells her he loves her. Finley Quaye is a British artist who won the 1998 Brit for Best Male Artist. This song appears on his third album "Much More than Much Love". William Orbit is an English producer and artist who also remixes for such artists as Sting and Blur.

He cowrote and coproduced Madonna's hit song "Ray of Light".
9. "The Way We Get By" by Spoon

Answer: "The Outsider", when Ryan and Seth go for Lobster at the Crab Shack at the beginning of the episode

After visiting the Crab Shack for Lobster at the beginning of the episode, Ryan gets a job there as a server. Spoon are from Austin, Texas and got their name from a song by Can, a German band. "The Way We Get By" can be heard on their CD "Kill the Moonlight".
10. "Rain City" by Turin Brakes

Answer: "The Gamble", when Ryan's mom decides to leave Ryan behind in Newport after talking to Kirsten

Ryan's mom, Dawn, wants to leave without saying goodbye to her son, but Kirsten catches her. They talk and this is when Kirsten decides to take Ryan in. Turin Brakes are a duo from Britain who appeared (along with many other artists) on the Band Aid 20 single "Do They Know it's Christmas". "Rain City" is on Turin Brakes' CD "Ether Song".

The other two songs on "Music From the O.C. Mix 1" are "California" by Phantom Planet which is the theme song, and "Paint the Silence" by South which is heard in "The Heights".
