Gibbs quotes this rule on numerous occasions when people, particularly McGee, bump into him and spill his coffee. By the way, Gibbs drinks his coffee black and strong. Don't even try to give him chicory, he has quite the palate for coffee!

Gibbs never allows suspects stay in proximity to one another. Being together allows suspects time to collaborate and agree on a set story to give to the investigators.

Being that Gibbs has been divorced three times, he knows how important it is to leave work at the office. Even though he seldom takes this advice himself, he encourages his team members not to take the work day home with them. For example, in one episode, Kate shot an innocent suspect. After seeing her reaction to it, Gibbs tells her to get over it because it was suicide by cop.

Unless they are undercover, Gibbs does expect his agents to be armed, but he has never explicitly mentioned this as one of his rules. He never wants them to be unreachable, mainly because it can be a safety issue for them. If they get into trouble, Gibbs wants to be able to hear from them or at least track them.

This is a great rule. The team members have used those knives many times for things such as: diffusing bombs, removing bullets from objects at crime scenes, breaking out of rooms, opening packages, and opening sealed evidence bags.

This is an obvious rule. Agents wear gloves at crime scenes in order to prevent any potential evidence from being contaminated. On several episodes, local LEOs contaminated the crime scene before Gibbs and his team arrives. As a result, everyone had to be fingerprinted in order to rule out their fingerprints from those of potential suspects.

Even though I'm sure all of these things would make Gibbs upset, his rule states not to take anything for granted. Gibbs solves many of his cases using tiny pieces of evidence, most of which would be unnoticed by most agents. He never takes any piece of potential evidence for granted, no matter how small.

He also doesn't take his team for granted. He appreciates all of them for their talents and for what they bring to the team, even if he never verbally states it.

Gibbs is a firm believer that you finish what you start. When one of Tony's cases gets reopened, Gibbs makes him take charge of the team to revisit the case. I believe that this is the only time you hear DiNozzo call Gibbs "Jethro". It is also one of the few times that you see Gibbs take part in a "campfire" session.

Gibbs first mentions this rule in the season six episode "Collateral Damage". It's likely that Gibbs acquired part of his dislike for lawyers during his three divorces. Just as a note, he particularly seems to dislike JAG lawyer Commander Faith Coleman who appears in several episodes.

Gibbs considers saying you're sorry to be a sign of weakness. After one if his team members screws up, Gibbs prefers that they simply tell him that it won't happen again. He has, however, apologized a couple of times on the show; once to Kate for being late to her funeral and once to Ducky after coming out of retirement. Even though Gibbs mentions this rule very often in the series, he never mentions which number corresponds to this rule.
