Television Quiz: NYPD Blue: 25 Questions | Television

I was surprised to see that there was only one Funtrivia quiz about "NYPD Blue," so I thought I'd give this long-running show a little attention. Enjoy -- and remember, friends don't let friends see Sipowicz naked.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the last episode of season five, Detectives Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) and Diane Russell (Kim Delaney) finally get married in a civil ceremony at City Hall. Who stands as witness for their wedding?

Answer: A total stranger

When Bobby and Diane realize that they forgot to bring a witness, they ask a couple waiting to get married themselves -- complete strangers to them both! -- to fill in. The imminent groom, a man named Alex Johnson, agrees to stand as witness to the hasty nuptials.
2. When Andy Sipowicz marries Sylvia Costas (Sharon Lawrence) in season two's finale, Detective John Kelly (David Caruso) is unable to attend the wedding as Andy's best man, so Bobby Simone fills in at the last minute. Kelly had to bow out because he was out of the country. Where was he?

Answer: India

According to Sipowicz's dialogue, Kelly was in the middle of a bodyguard assignment in India, and thus was unable to make it to New York for the wedding.
3. Late in the fifth season, we learn that occasional PAA (Police Administrative Aide) John Irvin (Bill Brochtrup) has started a business on the side. What does John's side job entail?

Answer: Computer graphics

John tries to start his own computer graphics company, but fails miserably a few months later. John eventually returns to his position as PAA for the 15th precinct, where he remained until the end of the series, in 2004.
4. Original PAA Donna Abandando (Gail O'Grady) was an avid fan of a particular sports team. Which one?

Answer: the New York Rangers

Donna had a Rangers penant in her apartment, and she even dated a Ranger for a while.
5. In season five, Andy Sipowicz had a major cancer scare. Where in his body was the cancer centered?

Answer: his prostate

Andy's prostate (which he constantly mispronounced as "prostrate"!)was eventually surgically removed.
6. Detective Danny Sorenson (Rick Schroeder) was not born in the United States. Where was he born?

Answer: Norway

At first, I thought that Danny was an "Army brat," the son of an American soldier who was stationed overseas, but later episodes suggested that Danny is actually a full-on Norwegian -- he mentioned that, when he came to America as a small child, he had to "learn the language," which wouldn't have been the case if he were merely an American's son born abroad.
7. Who killed Diane Russell's father?

Answer: Diane's mother

Diane's mother, fed up with decades of physical (and probably sexual) abuse, finally shot her husband dead in season three. Diane's brother Dougie tried to take the blame, but Bobby and Diane eventually figured out the truth. (Incidentally, Diane has no sisters.)
8. Bobby Simone's first wife died of cancer. What was her name?

Answer: Mary

Mary's illness -- and, later, her death -- was part of Bobby's motivation for taking a job driving the Commissioner of Police's car, the post he held before transferring into the 15th precinct.
9. Detective Jill Kirkendall is a mother. If you asked her how many kids she had, how would she respond?

Answer: "Two sons."

Jill's sons are named Kyle and Frank.
10. True or False: Bobby Simone died because he needed a heart transplant, and his condition became fatal before a replacement heart could be found.

Answer: False

Bobby DID receive a replacement heart (thanks to the donation of the widow of a uniformed cop who had died unexpectedly), but it didn't take. Bobby technically died not of cardiac problems, but from an abscess in his brain that, the doctors said, likely stemmed from the same opportunistic infection that had cost Bobby his original heart in the first place.
11. Bobby Simone, according to his own dialogue, was of mixed heritage. Which ethnic background could he NOT claim as part of his genetic make-up?

Answer: Cuban

Bobby said more than once that his father was French, and his mother was Portuguese. (For the record, they met in Belize.) Bobby has never referred to any Cuban heritage...nor has Jimmy Smits, the actor who played the role. Smits is the son of a Puerto Rican mother and a Suriname father.
12. Andy Sipowicz, Jr. (Michael DeLuise) -- the son of Dennis Franz's character -- once served in the U.S. military. Which branch was it?

Answer: Air Force

Andy Jr. even wore his USAF uniform to his father's wedding to Sylvia Costas. He later left the service and joined the police department in Hackensack, New Jersey.
13. One of the following regular characters on the show was played by an actor or actress who had previously played a different, smaller "guest role" on "NYPD Blue." Which character was played by someone we had seen before, albeit briefly?

Answer: Detective Connie McDowell (Charlotte Ross)

In the fifth season, Ross played Laurie Richardson, the battered wife of a corrupt uniformed cop in the 15th precinct. About mid-way through season eight, she appeared as Detective Connie McDowell, and became a regular cast member a few episodes later.

None of the other actors listed appeared on the show before being cast in their regular roles.
14. Which character has NOT had problems with alcoholism?

Answer: Lieutenant Arthur Fancy

Andy has been portrayed as an alcoholic since the very first episode, and Diane's drinking problem plagued her early appearances, as well. Katie, Andy's ex-wife, surprisingly hit the bottle after Andy Jr.'s death, a fact Andy Sr. learned about early in season six.

Arthur Fancy has never been portrayed as having a drinking problem.
15. Whose brother died of a drug overdose?

Answer: Detective James Martinez (Nicholas Turturro)

Martinez's brother died in the very first season of the show.
16. In season five, PAA Naomi Reynolds (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick), a gorgeous redhead with a lilting southern accent, confesses a secret to Bobby Simone. What is Naomi's secret?

Answer: She is an illegal alien.

The apparently southern Naomi is actually an Australian! Bobby is the only person at he 15th precinct she tells.
17. In the wake of Lt. Fancy's departure from the series, the detectives of the 15th squad were ALMOST stuck with a new boss named Susan Dalto, an abrasive, condescending, disrespectful control freak. The actress playing Dalto also played a regular character on a "Star Trek" series. Which character did she play?

Answer: Lt. Tasha Yar, on "Star Trek: The Next Generation"

Denise Crosby played Tasha Yar, and later Susan Dalto. Only a last-minute maneuver from the departing Arthur Fancy saved the 15th squad from Dalto. Lt. Tony Rodriguez was given the squad thanks to a single phone call from Fancy.
18. Before he became the new lieutenant of the 15th squad, in which division of the NYPD did Tony Rodriguez work?

Answer: Narcotics

Much is made of the fact that Rodriguez spent many years working deep undercover assignments as a Narcotics officer.
19. Detective Baldwin Jones' mother gave him an unusual first name. After whom did she name her son?

Answer: a writer

Baldwin tells Greg Medavoy that he is named for pioneering African-American novelist James Baldwin, who wrote such works as "Go Tell It on the Mountain." Jones originally told his new colleagues that he likes to go by the nickname "D", but that went away pretty quickly -- everyone wound up calling him "Baldwin" right up until the end of the series.
20. A number of characters have disappeared from this show because they have died. Which character is NOT, as far as we know, dead?

Answer: Jill Kirkendall

Sylvia was the victim of a stray bullet. Danny was murdered after getting too deeply involved in an undercover assignment concerning the mobbed-up employees of a strip club. Jill left the show in disgrace, after having helped her felon husband commit a number of major crimes. She just disappeared one episode, and has presumably been on the run from the law ever since!
21. Who kisses Bobby Simone on the forehead just minutes before Bobby dies in a hospital bed?

Answer: Andy Sipowicz

In a rare moment of physical affection, Andy -- who knows full well that Bobby is about to die -- kisses his best friend, and whispers to him, "I'll take care of her," a reference to Diane, Bobby's soon-to-be widow. (If you can watch this scene without crying, your heart is made of wood.)
22. Which character had a baby as a teen, and gave that baby up for adoption?

Answer: Connie McDowell

Late in season eight, Connie tells Diane that, when she was fifteen years old, she had a daughter whom she subsequently gave up for adoption. In the ninth season, Connie would make contact with her now-teenaged daughter, with mixed results.
23. Which character donated his sperm to help a lesbian couple have a baby?

Answer: Greg Medavoy

Greg helped his friend Abby Sullivan (Paige Turco) and her lover Kathy achieve their dream of parenthood. Unfortunately, Kathy was killed thanks to the machinations of a jealous ex-girlfriend soon afterward.
24. Diane Russell left the 15th squad -- and Kim Delaney left the series -- near the end of season eight. Part of the reason Diane sought a change of scenery was due to a whirlwind romance with a man from her past. What was this man's profession?

Answer: doctor

Diane had a chance encounter with Dr. Victor Carreras (David Barrera), the doctor who had been so valued by both Diane and Bobby Simone as Bobby was dying years earlier, and their relationship took an almost immediate, unexpectedly romantic turn. Part of Diane's desire for a "new life" was her new relationship with Carreras. (Kind of creepy, if you ask me.)
25. And finally, a question regarding the series' very first episode, in 1993. At the end of that premiere episode, a character is lying in a hospital bed, near death. Which one?

Answer: Andy Sipowicz

Near the end of the pilot episode, Sipowicz is shot multiple times by mobster Alfonse Giardella (Robert Costanzo). The last scene depicts John Kelly at Sipowicz's bedside, hoping that his partner pulls through.
