Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first squad member to leave was Andy's partner of seven years, Detective John Kelly. Under what circumstances did Kelly leave the squad?

Answer: He was forced to transfer by Commander Haverill and quit

Kelly (David Caruso) was forced out because of his defense of Officer Janice Licalsi, who killed mobster Angelo Marino and his chauffeur. He lied to protect her. Actually David Caruso left "NYPD Blue" to attempt a career in films. Word is, the cast and crew were happy to see him leave, as he was supposedly very difficult to work with, even going so far as to throw a trash can at Dennis Franz' head.

Not to take away from Caruso's work; he did a fine job as Detective Kelly.
2. The squad had a long procession of PAAs, the civilian employees that did the clerical work. Donna Abandando was the first PAA on "NYPD Blue". She had a romance with Greg Medavoy, which didn't have a happy ending, and she eventually left the 15th. Whatever happened to Donna?

Answer: She got a job in Silicon Valley

Donna realized the would be no career advancement in her job at the 15th, so she took the job in Silicon Valley when it was offered to her. Greg and Donna had fallen in love, and he moved into her apartment, but there were problems, and eventually they broke up. Donna felt Greg didn't know how to be happy. Geri Turner (Debra Christofferson), Dolores Mayo (Lola Glaudini) and Naomi Reynolds (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick) all worked at the squad in the PAA position. ("PAA" stands for Public (or Police) Administrative Assistant.)
3. Diane Russell came to the squad from an undercover job. One of her most difficult cases at the 15th would be another undercover, this one involving psycho bad guy Jimmy Liery. He almost sent Diane over the edge, but in the end her love for Bobby Simone saved her. Under what circumstances did Diane Russell finally leave the show?

Answer: She took a leave of absence

Diane finally came to realize that she had to take a leave of absence. Bobby's presence was still so strong for her there that she could never recover from his death as long as she stayed. She later returned to the job, but joined another squad. Scary Jimmy Liery was played by Christopher Meloni.

The undercover job was particularly difficult for Diane, who was struggling with a drinking problem. Kim Delaney played the part of Diane Russell for four seasons, winning an Emmy for it in 1993. Her romance with Bobby Simone was, for me, one of the greatest stories on this show.
4. Detective James Martinez grew up on the show. He started as a young cop, and grew into a fine detective who loved his job. Why did Martinez leave the detective squad?

Answer: He received a promotion

James took the sergeant's test and passed it, and was assigned to another precinct. James fell head over heels for a young PAA named Gina who worked at the squad for a while. They eventually married and had a baby. Actually Nicolas Turturro left "NYPD Blue" to work on other projects, one of the many actors who left the series over the years.
5. Detective Jill Kirkendall and Diane Russell were partners and good friends. Jill found herself in a world of trouble because of her no-good ex-husband Don, who was involved in the drug business. What became of Jill?

Answer: She ran away with her children

Jill made the huge mistake of trying to protect Don Kirkendall. By the time she realized she was in way over her head, Don had kidnapped one of their kids and was threatening to kill him. Diane stuck her neck way out for Jill, trying to help her. This even included kissing slimy ex-cop Harry Denby, who was Don's partner in crime.

By the time the police got their hands on Don Kirkendall, it was too late for Jill. She had to take her boys and make a run for it, or probably would have ended up in jail herself for helping him. So Jill is "in the wind."
6. Detective Danny Sorenson was a troubled young cop. He fell madly in love with Diane Russell, and when Diane broke things off with Danny, he became despondent. What finally became of Danny Sorenson?

Answer: He was murdered

Danny was killed by mob types that he was investigating undercover. He had gotten involved with a stripper, and the club where she worked had some involvement with the mob. They tried to use Danny, who went to Lt. Rodriguez, and Danny was given the go-ahead to pretend to cooperate with them.

The bad guys must have caught on, because the stripper (Kristin) was found murdered in Danny's apartment, and Danny's body was found several months later. Sipowicz loses yet another partner. Rick Schroeder played Danny, and although I've seen some negative comments about his performance, I thought the character was very interesting and well-acted.
7. Arthur Fancy was the squad boss throughout the first seven seasons on he show. He certainly had his share of headaches, in particular his disagreements with Sipowicz regarding racial issues. Fancy finally left the squad; where did he go?

Answer: He was promoted to captain

He finally got his promotion, well-deserved. His replacement was Lt. Tony Rodriguez, played by Esai Morales. Many of the actors who left the series have stated that the work situation was very difficult for them. The head writer, David Milch, often continued with re-writes up until the last possible moment, which caused the actors considerable stress.
8. Bobby Simone was probably one of the most popular characters on the show. He was Andy's partner, Diane's husband, and he was an all-around great guy. What did the future hold for Bobby Simone?

Answer: He died

It was a heart-breaking story. Bobby began to have problems with his heart and eventually died.
As usual, Andy had grumbled quite a bit upon Simone's arrival. He and John Kelly had been partners for seven years and had been close friends. Still, it didn't take long for Bobby and Andy to mesh as partners, as it was obvious Bobby was a good cop and a tough guy, too. He had been married, but his wife Mary had recently died from cancer.
When Jimmy Smits decided to leave "NYPD Blue", they made the decision to kill off his character. So we went through the agonizing illness and eventual death of Bobby Simone. The whole squad missed Bobby terribly, and things never seemed quite the same after his death.
9. Greg Medavoy was a good guy and a good cop. He was on the show from the third episode until the very end, longest next to Andy. He certainly had his ups and downs in the romance department, with a divorce, a broken romance with Donna, and falling for Abby, the lesbian cop. Who was the woman Greg finally ended up with?

Answer: Brigid Scofield

Brigid was the real estate agent that Greg met while searching for an apartment in the city. She felt that Greg had a talent for real estate sales; subsequently Greg decided to retire from the force and begin a new career working with Brigid. They also fell in love-the series ended on a happy note for Medavoy. Laura Murphy was a detective who came on the show at the very end.
10. The heart and soul of "NYPD Blue" was Andy Sipowicz. Dennis Franz created an unforgettable character. After 12 years, and many trials and tribulations, what became of Andy Sipowicz?

Answer: He took command of the squad

Andy ended up as the boss of the detective squad in the 15th precinct. Dennis Franz earned eight Emmy nominations and won four for his brilliant work as Andy Sipowicz. As long as there are reruns, Sipowicz lives!
