Name The TV Quiz Show (UK TV)

I am a big fan of quiz shows on TV (as well as Fun Trivia). It is interesting to see how they have developed over the years. These questions relate to the UK names of the shows, although some of them are aired in other countries under different names.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This tough quiz started each show with 15 contestants and through elimination ended with just one contestant trying to build a score good enough to come back to the "Grand Final". Hosted by William G. Stewart, can you name the quiz show?

Answer: 15 to 1

Unlike many TV quiz shows, "15 To 1" had little chat and was really a stream of questions. In rounds 1 and 2, contestants began with three lives and answered questions in turn. Incorrect answers lost lives. In round 3, if a contestant gave a correct answer, they could nominate a competitor to answer the next question until only three contestants remained. In round 4, the three remaining contestants gained points for correct answers, but lost a life for an incorrect one until all lives were lost.
The top fifteen scores in a series came back to play in the "Grand Final".
2. Which popular TV quiz show with the catch phrase, "You can't beat a bit of bully" was based on the game of darts? Each team consisted of a darts player who scored the points and a non-dart player to answer the questions.

Answer: Bullseye

Hosted by Jim Bowen, the show ran from 1981 to 1995 and was one of the most popular shows of its time. It was revived by Challenge in 2006 with a new presenter. The program probably produced more catch phrases than any other game show on UK TV.
3. This quiz show was based on two teams of four students competing against each other. Originally presented by Bamber Gascoigne from 1962 to 1987 and then revived in 1995 and presented by Jeremy Paxman. Can you name the TV quiz show?

Answer: University Challenge

One of the longest running quiz shows on TV and one with many "highbrow" questions, "University Challenge" has almost become a British institution. There are several prominent people who have appeared on the show during their student days. In the U.S.A. a similar show was called "College Bowl".
4. Hughie Green was host of one of the early quiz shows on British television and it ran from 1955 - 1968. Originally starting at £1, contestants could increase their winnings two-fold up £32, but would lose all the money if they gave an incorrect answer. What was the show called?

Answer: Double Your Money

Hughie Green brought the format from his radio show and it was based on contestants answering general knowledge questions and each correct answer doubled the money they won. Although £32 seems a trivial prize now, it was worth around two weeks wages at the time. Successful contestants could then go on to the "Treasure Trail" to win up to £1,000.
5. Based on the U.S. program of the same name, which TV quiz show was based on identifying well known sayings from animated pictures, often featuring "Mr Chips"?

Answer: Catchphrase

The U.K. version was hosted by Roy Walker from 1986 to 1999 and contestants had to guess the saying or proverb from the brief animation shown. Each correct answer built up a cash pot. The original series ended in 2002, but it has been revived in 2013 with little success.
6. Who would have thought that a quiz show that rewards obscure answers would be so popular? With humble beginnings on BBC Two in 2009 and moving to BBC One in 2011, this show is on weekday early evening prime time. Can you name the show that champions obscure facts?

Answer: Pointless

In each round, contestants are given a category and answers are scored based on the number of correct responses in a previous survey of 100 people. An incorrect answer scores 100 points. The lower scoring teams progress to the next round with the last pair playing for the jackpot cash.

In the final, the contestants have to find a pointless answer to win the money (i.e. a correct answer that none of the 100 surveyed had given). A lot of the success of the show has been attributed to the banter between co-presenters Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman.
7. With its famous black chair and equally well known theme music, "Approaching Menace", this quiz show has been on air since 1972. Presented by Magnus Magnusson for the first 25 years, can you name this icon of British quiz shows?

Answer: Mastermind

The format is basically the same for all the series with four (and later five) contestants answering questions over two rounds within a specified time. Round one is based on a specialist subject selected by the contestant and round two is general knowledge.

The winner of each show progresses to the next round until the final. The atmosphere is deliberately intimidating and more like an interrogation.
8. Named after a disparaging nickname for people who are regarded as intellectual or highbrow, this quiz show has a team of five challengers pitted against a team of five successful quizzers. Can you name the show?

Answer: Eggheads

First broadcast in 2003, the show featured five internationally renowned quizzers who take on a team of amateurs. There are four rounds of head to head contests where the challengers select their team member for the designated category and also which of the "Eggheads" they challenge.

The losers of the head to head rounds are eliminated from the final round, where the teams can confer. If the challengers beat the "Eggheads", they win the cash jackpot.
9. A surprisingly successful quiz show format was asking adults to answer questions that are part of the curriculum for primary school children (from age five to eleven years old). What is the name of this unexpectedly challenging quiz show?

Answer: Are You Smarter Than a 10 Year Old?

The show is based on the U.S. show, "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" and asks questions that young kids are taught at school. While you would expect these to be easy, many adult contestants have long forgotten what they were taught at school and often struggle to find the correct answer.

The show has a panel of 10 year old kids and the adult can select one to come to their rescue if they don't know the answer.
10. First aired on 2nd December 1968 and running for more than 1,000 episodes, this sports based quiz is one the BBC's prized programs. Many famous sportsmen have captained the teams over the years and presenters include David Vine, David Coleman and Sue Barker. What is the name of this light-hearted quiz on sport?

Answer: A Question Of Sport

Each episode has two teams, each with a regular captain (and these have changed over the years) and two guest sportsmen/women. There are several formats for the rounds and these are mixed around for each show to add some variety. The appeal of the show is the banter and competitiveness of the two teams which make it good entertainment.
