The pilots of the Evangelion or EVAs are called 'Children'. Rei is the First Child/Children and pilots Unit 00, also known as the Evangelion prototype. In this instance, Rei is wearing just her school uniform without any bandages, although the next time Shinji sees Rei inside the NERV facility, she is wearing her plug suit and bandages.

During one of the activation tests for Unit 00, the unit goes berserk and leaves Rei seriously injured. Gendo Ikari goes to rescue Rei himself, during which his hands get burned and his eyeglasses fall. Rei keeps the eyeglasses and appears to treasure them but later destroys them and defies Gendo.

Because of Asuka's competitive personality, she often comes into odds with Rei, whom she sarcastically calls 'Wonder Girl' and teases as the Commander's favorite. She particularly gets angry when Rei is able to synchronize with Shinji easily in preparation for a battle with Israfel and is reluctant to follow Rei when they are lost inside the NERV facility.

She gets more infuriated, though, when she is asked to be Rei's back-up.

Asuka compares Rei to a doll because she is always following orders and is seemingly without a will of her own. This makes Asuka hate Rei even more since dolls are a part of her traumatic childhood. Rei has the tendency to take up the defensive position because, as Misato observes, she has little value for her own life. However, in the battle against Matariel, it is Asuka who takes up the defensive position while Rei picks up the weapons and hands them to Shinji who fires at Matariel and eventually destroys it. Asuka does this to repay Shinji for saving her in the previous battle against Sandalphon.

During the battle with Shinji, Kaworu generates an AT field, which he explains to Shinji as the walls of the heart that keep other people out and divides minds into separate entities.
