Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both the first and the third rounds consisted of four questions that were asked of the panel of contestants. How many spins did contestants earn if he/she was first to ring in with the correct answer to a question?

Answer: three

Contestants were asked a series of four questions. Contestants who knew the answer to a question would buzz in. The one who buzzed in first said his/her answer, and it was added to two additional possible answers from which the other two contestants chose. Then the correct answer was revealed. If the contestant who had buzzed in first was correct, he/she received three spins to use in the second or fourth rounds. If one of the other contestants chose the correct answer, he/she was given one spin to use later.
2. What color was the Whammy?

Answer: red

In the second and fourth rounds, each contestant would use his/her spins that had been earned in the previous round. The whammy was a contestant's enemy. When contestants would spin then stop the game board's moving light on a square, there were 16 squares in all, he/she would win what was on that square. If the square contained a Whammy, the contestant lost all of his/her money and prizes.
3. How was the whammy seen by the home viewers?

Answer: as a short animated skit crossing our screens

I really don't know how or if the contestants saw the whammies' skits. We, at home watched a short animated skit unfold across the lower section of the TV screen. At the same time, the contestants would feign interactions with the whammy. There were over 50 different whammy skits that were seen on the show.
4. Was there more than one whammy?

Answer: Yes

There were a variety of whammy characters. The main one was called Whammy, he had a girl friend named Tammy Whammett and a dog named Fang. Whammy was also a member of an a' capella or barbershop quartet group, there was a ragtime band with six members, a group of whammies dressed as The Supremes, and a group of whammies dressed as The Beatles.
5. Were Whammy and Tammy married?

Answer: No

Although Whammy and Tammy Whammette appeared in several of the skits together, they were just dating, according to host Peter Tomarken. Several times Peter advised viewers to watch the evening news for updates on their relationship.
6. Which contestant won the most in cash and prizes on 'Press Your Luck'?

Answer: Michael Larson

Michael Larson was an unemployed ice cream truck driver from Lebanon, Ohio. Larson, who had spent many hours watching of 'Press Your Luck', had noticed that the seeming random pattern of lit boxes on the game board were anything but random. He discovered the game used five distinct patters, which he learned and memorized.

After practicing at home, he tried out for the show, and was chosen over the suspicions of one of the producers. He went on to win $110,237 in cash and prizes.
7. What is the official name of the one TV show that was the spin off of 'Press Your Luck'?

Answer: Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck

'Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck' has aired new episodes from 2002-2003, and since then has been in reruns, with the new host, Todd Newton. The board was redesigned, the first question round was eliminated and the second round, now the first, is where a contestant can spin until he or she hits a whammy. In the final round they have added double whammies which, as Todd Newton says, "He'll come out and mess with you."
8. In the early years, CBS had a winnings cap of $25,000, and in the later years $75,000. Aside from the top amount a contestant could win, what was the maximum number of GAMES a player could win before being retired?

Answer: five

Each winner would return the next day to compete against two new challengers, but after the fifth win, he/she would retire as an undefeated champion. There was also a limit on how much a contestant could win. From 1983 through November 1984 there was a cap on winnings of $25,000, though if the winner accumulated over this limit during their final show, they could keep it all. From November 1, 1984 through the end of the show's run in 1986 the cap on winnings was raised to $50,000, and they could keep up to $75,000 if that amount was achieved during their final show.
9. What was a strategy frequently used by contestants when they felt a whammy was about to appear on the board?

Answer: They would pass their remaining spins to the next highest, or highest scoring player.

In this version of 'Press Your Luck' if a player felt he/she would certainly spin to a whammy, or if he/she felt they were far enough ahead and couldn't be caught, he/she would pass their remaining spins to another player. If this player was in second place, the spins went to the player with the highest score. If this player had the highest score, the spins went to the player with the second highest score. If a player had spins passed to him/her, these spins must be used until they are all gone OR until that player lands on a whammy.
10. Aside from 'Press Your Luck', what other game show has Peter Tomarken hosted?

Answer: All of these

Peter Tomarken hosted the following game shows after the cancellation of 'Press Your Luck': 'Wordplay'(pilot only in 1986), 'Bargain Hunters' (1987), 'Wipeout' (1988-1989), 'Monopoly' (1990) and 'Decades' (1994). Regretfully, Peter Tomarken died in an airplane crash on March 13, 2006 while en route to San Diego for the group Angel Flight West to transport medical patients who could not afford to buy private air ambulance tickets.
