Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What future "Fall Guy" cast member was less successful with the show "Co-ed Fever" which went off the air after only one episode in 1979?

Answer: Heather Thomas

Heather Thomas played Sandi on "Co-Ed Fever" which was a rip-off of "National Lampoon's Animal House". The show starred David Keith and Alexa Kenin, and while eight episodes were produced, "Pepperoni Passion" was the only one to air, on February 4, 1979.

Thomas had much more success as Jody Banks on "Fall Guy" which had 112 episodes.
2. Pop singer Melba Moore's attempt at a sitcom in the mid-1980s was doomed by what event happening the same day as the show's premiere?

Answer: The space shuttle Challenger explosion

"Melba" premiered on January 28, 1986. Unfortunately, the Challenger had exploded only hours earlier, leading "Melba" to have the lowest ratings in the history of any first-run television program. "Melba" was a family sitcom by CBS that was attempting to capture some of the same audience as "The Cosby Show". The first episode of "Melba" was titled "Manhunt". Eight episodes were produced, and they were aired in August and September of 1986, to very low ratings.

Chernobyl happened April 26, the Berlin bombing occurred April 5, and Geraldo's disastrous (but non-fatal) opening of the Capone vault happened on April 21.
3. What member of the band The Eagles was far less successful when he made the television show "South of Sunset"?

Answer: Glenn Frey

Glenn Frey played private investigator Cody McMahon in "South of Sunset" which was a Los Angeles-based rip-off of "Miami Vice". Frey had actually gotten his start as an actor on "Miami Vice" playing a drug smuggler named Jimmy Cole in "Smuggler's Blues".

While seven episodes of "South of Sunset" were produced, the only one to make it on the air was "Satyricon", which aired on October 27, 1993.
4. Michael Rispoli, who would go on to have a successful career as a character actor, had a major bomb with the legal drama "The Great Defender" in 1995. What city was this one episode wonder set in?

Answer: Boston

While there have been successful legal dramas set in Boston - "The Practice" and "Boston Legal" come to mind - "The Great Defender" was not one of them.
"The Great Defender" had the misfortune of airing against ratings powerhouse "60 Minutes". The pilot aired on March 5, 1995, and Fox then dropped it from the schedule. Of the eight episodes produced, only five were ever shown; four more were shown in July 1995.

Michael Rispoli bounced back and has been in numerous films and television shows in the 20 years since "Great Defender" including "The Sopranos", "Third Watch" and "Magic City".
5. What cast member of "NYPD Blue" had an incredibly brief spin-off series called "Public Morals" in 1996?

Answer: Bill Brochtrup

Bill Brochtrup, administrative aide John Irvin, transferred to the vice division of the NYPD in "Public Morals". The show aired once on CBS, in an episode called "The Blue Cover" on October 30, 1996. The naming convention for the show was each episode was called "The [blank] Cover". Episodes include "The Shrimp Cover" and "The Tuna Cover". Perhaps it was best the show did not last.

Other cast members of "Public Morals" include Louis Ferreira, Peter Gerety, and a young Donal Logue. Luckily for Brochtrup, his old job was still waiting for him at "NYPD Blue". He was on that hit series for 156 episodes, from 1995 to 2005.
6. What former NFL player was the star of the very short-lived Fox drama "Lawless" back in 1997?

Answer: Brian Bosworth

Brian Bosworth, who was a star at the University of Oklahoma, played linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks from 1987 to 1989. His career was cut short by shoulder injuries, and he went into acting in 1991.

"Lawless" was about a private detective named John Lawless (Bosworth) and his sidekick, a Jamaican helicopter pilot named Reggie (Glenn Plummer). The show was a hybrid of "Magnum PI" and "Miami Vice" without anything good from either.

The show's pilot aired on Fox on March 21, 1997. A second episode was aired on April 21, but that was it for "Lawless".
7. While there have lots of bad reality shows, "The Will" has to rank among the worst. Its premise: Family members would compete over who gets custody of a ranch. Where was the ranch located?

Answer: Kansas

"The Will" was a competition series centered around Arizona land developer Bill Long, Sr. His heirs competed to see who was worthy to inherit his Kansas ranch.

The show aired only once, on January 8, 2005. It was cancelled by CBS immediately. The show's creator, Mike Fleiss, has had much more success with "The Bachelor". There were six episodes of "The Will", and for anybody who cares, the winner was Penny, Long's wife.
8. What was the name of Heather Graham's relationship comedy on ABC that got cancelled after only one episode?

Answer: Emily's Reasons Why Not

"Emily's Reasons Why Not" was about a self-help author who was very bad at relationships. The premise of the show was that she created lists to determine who to date. The naming convention for the show was "Why Not to [blank]". Episodes included "Why Not to Date Your Gynecologist" and "Why Not to Cheat on Your Best Friend".

The pilot episode was heavily criticized by Mormons for making fun of a young man who was abstinent, painting him as gay. Add that to lackluster ratings, and executives at ABC quickly decided to kill the show. The show's lone episode in the United States aired January 9, 2006. Six episodes were produced, and they did air in places like Latin America, Spain and Slovenia.

"Committed" was on NBC from January 4 to March 15. 2005, lasting 15 episodes. "Love Monkey" was an another 2006 television casualty. It starred Tom Cavanaugh and lasted three episodes in January. "Valentine" was a show about love gods that managed to survive on the CW for the whole of the 2008-2009 television season.
9. What television network took a gamble that social networking could translate into a successful TV show when they aired "Quarterlife" in 2008?

Answer: NBC

NBC executives were convinced they had a hit idea with "Quarterlife". After all, it was created by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, the geniuses behind "Thirtysomething" and "My So-Called Life".

"Quarterlife" started out as an Internet-based series, and NBC was convinced that people would watch it on television. The show received the worst ratings of any program aired on NBC in 17 years, and was immediately canceled. The one and only episode aired on February 26, 2008. It had lower ratings than a debate between Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton on MSNBC.

"Quarterlife" followed the lives of a group of twenty-somethings. The main character was a journalist named Dylan Krieger (Bitsy Tulloch) who ran a blog named Quarterlife.
10. What cast member from "Star Trek" actually sang country music on "Secret Talents of the Stars", a very short-lived talent show from 2008?

Answer: George Takei

It was Mister Sulu, George Takei, who sang "On The Road Again" on "Secret Talents of the Stars". The show was hosted by John O'Hurley of "Seinfeld" fame. Along with Takei, country singer Clint Black performed stand up and Olympic figure skater Sasha Cohen performed with a group of Chinese acrobats. The judges for the competition were Debbie Reynolds, singer Brian McKnight, and television producer Gavin Polone, The show's one and only episode was on April 8, 2008; it was cancelled the next day.
