Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "When somebody tries to murder his cereal, he should see a psychiatrist!" Which dim-witted character said this?

Answer: Rose

Rose said this in response to a comment made by Sophia, while the group was waiting for Blanche to see a psychiatrist. The group had banded together in order to force Blanche to see a psychiatrist, after she was overcome with depression at the thought of having to go through menopause.

This quotation can be heard in the first episode of season two, entitled "End of the Curse".
2. Dorothy's mother, Sophia, said the following words to her: "Jealousy is a very ugly thing Dorothy...and so are you in anything backless."

Answer: True

Sophia said this to her daughter, Dorothy, after the latter expressed anger and envy at the fact that her mother had met Burt Reynolds and a number of other famous individuals. Earlier in the episode, Blanche had won tickets to a private party held by Burt Reynolds, but she only had three tickets, so Sophia was left out. However, Dorothy, Blanche and Rose then went on to be mistakenly arrested for prostitution. Therefore when Sophia arrived at the prison to bail them out, she asked which one of them was going to forfeit their ticket so that she herself could go in their place. Despite Sophia's kindness, the other three refused to allow her to take one of their tickets, prompting Sophia to steal them and go to the party alone, leaving the three women in jail.

This quotation can be heard in the second episode of season two, entitled "Ladies of the Evening".
3. "You bring your little wife with you, or did you make her stay home and clean out her toy box?" To whose ex-husband did Sophia direct this question?

Answer: Dorothy's

Sophia said this to Dorothy's ex-husband, Stan, after he showed up at their house asking to speak to Dorothy. A wary Stan merely muttered in Sophia's direction, forcing Dorothy to take her mother aside and explain that she had previously explained that "Stan and Chrissie got a divorce". A surprised Sophia then exclaimed that she thought they "had got a horse", before berating Dorothy by saying "I'm eighty. You gotta enunciate."

This quotation can be heard in the third episode of season two, entitled "Take Him, He's Mine".
4. Rose: "But I'm really no good at listening to people's problems." Dorothy: "Rose, you're a grief counsellor. It's what you do." Rose: "I know, but I have the highest ___ rate in the office!" What word belongs in the blank?

Answer: Suicide

Dorothy and Rose had this conversation while the former was trying to convince the latter to go out with Stan for the night, so that Dorothy could go out on a date. As Dorothy's ex-husband, Stan, arrived moments before her date, with the revelation that he had lost his business and needed company, Dorothy tried to convince Rose to do it as a favour to her. However, Rose was against the idea, which is when she came up with the above quotation. Luckily for Dorothy, Blanche agreed to be Stan's shoulder to cry on, after Dorothy promised to introduce her to "all of Geoffrey's naval officer friends".

This quotation can be heard in the third episode of season two, entitled "Take Him, He's Mine".
5. "Stanley, you truly are one chromosome away from being a ___." Which of the following vegetables belongs in the blank?

Answer: Potato

Dorothy said this to her ex-husband, Stanley, after she stormed over to his hotel room in the middle of the night, convinced that Blanche was sleeping in his bed. Despite admitting that she did not even like her ex-husband, Dorothy found it difficult to accept the friendship that had blossomed between Stanley and Blanche. Convinced that her friend was sleeping with her ex-husband, Dorothy went over to his house to confront Blanche. However, a mortified Dorothy soon discovered that it was not Blanche who was sleeping with Stanley, but a completely different woman.

This quotation can be heard in the third episode of season two, entitled "Take Him, He's Mine".
6. "In 1938, you could tell if someone was from St. Olaf. They were illiterate and they had teeth that looked like Indian corn!" Which "Golden Girl", who was from St. Olaf herself, said this when telling one of her stories?

Answer: Rose

These words were said by Rose, as she told the rest of the girls about a mean man from her home town of St. Olaf, named Ernest T. Minky. Likening him to one of the girls' own neighbours, Rose explained that this man was so hated that nobody ever went near his places of work, which were the library and the dentist, hence the above comment. She came up with this story after Dorothy remarked that the local children had dressed up as their own mean neighbour, Frieda Claxton, the previous Halloween.

This quotation can be heard in the fourth episode of season two, entitled "It's a Miserable Life".
7. "I passed a kidney stone once that was less painful than this." What was Rose doing that caused Sophia to say this?

Answer: Telling one of her stories

Sophia made this remark as Rose told one of her stories. Despite Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia's attempts to escape another detailed account of life in St. Olaf, Rose followed them into the kitchen. Once the girls thought Rose was done with her tale, she started up again, saying indignantly, "I'm only half done." This news prompted Sophia to come out with the above quotation.

This quotation can be heard in the fourth episode of season two, entitled "It's a Miserable Life".
8. "Find out what pills they gave her and ask for a doggie bag." Where did Rose say she had visited which promoted Sophia to come out with this quotation?

Answer: Heaven

Sophia made this remark when visiting Rose in the hospital, after the latter suffered an "oesophageal spasm". Rose claimed that she had "died and went to heaven", prompting Dorothy to respond with, "Rose, honey, you didn't die. You passed out. You hallucinated." However Rose was adamant that she had visited heaven, where she was reunited with her Uncle Johannsen, who died when she was nine, after a "steam shovel hit him in the mouth".

This quotation can be heard in the fifteenth episode of season two, entitled "Before and After".
9. "I start off slow. I'm cagey, like a panther. But when the time is right, I pounce! The crowd is on its feet. 'Sophia! Sophia!'" What charity event, (which she also participated in), was Sophia describing here?

Answer: Walkathon

Sophia said these words after returning home after completing the Walkathon. In her usual elaborate manner she recounted the events of the day to the other girls, before revealing that, moments before crossing the finishing line, she walked into a wall. She did, nonetheless, manage to finish the race, before collapsing in a heap on the ground.

This quotation can be heard in the sixteenth episode of season two, entitled "And Then There Was One".
10. "What'd she think? You were a boring dresser?" A surprised Blanche said these words on meeting Frank, a man Dorothy was smitten with. But why exactly was she so surprised?

Answer: He was a priest

Blanche said these words the first time she met Frank, a man Dorothy had been working with on a youth project. The reason for her surprise was due to the fact that Frank had turned up to dinner with the girls, dressed in cleric's clothing. Blanche's surprise was further justified by the fact that Dorothy was clearly attracted to him, but had never mentioned the fact that he was a priest. However, as Frank soon explained, Dorothy herself was not aware of this fact, as he had never revealed it to her.

This quotation can be heard in the eighteenth episode of season two, entitled "Forgive Me, Father".
