In the episode "Past Prologue" we are introduced to Garak, the lone Cardassian citizen on the station. Doctor Bashir and Garak would go on to have many lunches together during the run of the show and the two would form an uneasy but close friendship.

Andrew Robinson was born in New York and started his acting career in the 1960s. He originally auditioned for the role of Odo on "Star Trek: Deep space 9" before landing the part of the recurring character Garak. "In The Pale Moonlight" is one of the best critically acclaimed episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space 9". In it, Sisko and Garak conspire to bring the Romulans into the war by trying to convince Senator Vreenak of secret Dominion designs on the Romulan Star Empire. Vreenak finds out about the ruse but Garak has him killed while making it look like a Dominion attack.

The Romulans then declare war on the Dominion and join the Federation / Klingon alliance.
