Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What country was the setting for series 1 of the UK version of "Playing It Straight"?

Answer: Mexico

The show is primarily set in a Mexican hacienda that has been named 'El Rancho Macho', which translates to "The Male Ranch", for the purposes of the show. The contestants also travel to other parts of the country in order to participate in tasks designed to allow them to prove their masculinity (or otherwise!)
2. Who is the presenter of series 1 of the UK version of "Playing It Straight"?

Answer: June Sarpong

June Sarpong was born to Ghanaian parents in Newham, London on 31st May 1977. She began her career at KISS FM, before becoming an MTV presenter, after which she moved on to be a regular presenter on T4, Channel 4's youth segment. As the presenter of "Playing It Straight", she provides additional information to the audience above and beyond the commentary provided by the narrator, and guides the female contestant, Zoe Hardman, along her journey to ultimately select a straight guy as her winner.
3. What was the name of the first guy who Zoe chose to eliminate in Week 1?

Answer: Raphael

Zoe was convinced that the well-dressed Raphael was gay, and was shocked when he informed her that he was, in fact, straight. It wasn't a good start for Zoe, as she also chose to eliminate Pritesh in Week 1, and he too turned out to be straight.
4. Two new men joined the original ten at the hacienda in Week 3. Marco was one of them, but what was the name of the other?

Answer: Lee

Marco and Lee rode menacingly into the hacienda, two handsome new potential suitors for the lovely Zoe, much to the chagrin of the six remaining originals. Unfortunately for Lee, he wasn't given much of an opportunity to woo Zoe, as she chose to eliminate him on the very same episode!
5. What interesting piece of information did the presenter provide to Zoe as the two new contestants arrived in Week 3?

Answer: One of them was gay, and the other one was straight

June Sarpong advised Zoe that one of Marco or Lee was straight, and the other was gay. Imagine Zoe's frustration that when she eliminated Lee later in the episode, and asked the usual "before you go, I have to know, are you gay or are you straight", Lee responded that he couldn't tell her, as that would give away Marco's sexuality.
6. Which contestant had to visit the hospital twice during the series?

Answer: Daniel K

Blonde haired, blue eyed Manchester model Daniel Kelly first injured his arm during an arm wrestling contest with Ben. The injury seemed to recur during the task in which the guys had to harvest pinas from agave plants, and Daniel was taken to hospital.

Although in a sling, his arm seemed to be getting better, until he fell awkwardly on it when the guys were at the beach, and he once again had to be whisked away to hospital.
7. What was the name of the troubadour who sang the theme song, and provided musical interludes throughout the series?

Answer: Brian

Brian the Troubadour is played by California-born actor and musician Brian Beacock. The lyrics to the theme tune, as performed at the start of every episode by Brian, are as follows. "Here's a tale of ten strong cowboys, rugged, handsome and well dressed. Said "We're here to woo Miss Zoe, we're prepared for any test".

They came in to El Rancho Mancho, our Senorita didn't know. Some were straight, and some were not so, a game of love in Mexico. Will Zoe win, and find her mate? Who's out, who's in? Who's playing it straight?!"
8. Who was in the finale, alongside the eventual winner Ben?

Answer: Marco and Danny B

It was interesting to see that Zoe chose to keep the much more confident and bravado-filled Marco and Danny B along with masculine yet nervous and tender Ben as her final three. Marco didn't seem too bothered when Zoe told him that he hadn't won, however Danny B's reaction was much less magnanimous, and he walked off clearly peeved that he had failed to woo the fair Zoe with his rugged charm!
9. The eventual winner, Ben, turned out to be gay.

Answer: True

Throughout the series, Zoe had been saying how much she trusted Ben, and the revelation of the truth about his sexuality is clearly upsetting for Zoe, as she tries to hold back her disappointment and tears. June Sarpong congratulates Ben on winning the entire £100,000 prize money, and walks off consoling a clearly upset Zoe. Feeling guilty about having deceived her, Ben subsequently goes to see Zoe and offers her the entire £100,000 prize money.

The pair end up splitting the money equally, and we are treated to a fireworks show and song from Brian the Troubadour to end the series.
10. How many of the twelve male contestants were straight, and how many were gay?

Answer: 6 were straight, and 6 were gay

The order of eliminations, and sexual orientations of the twelve contestants was as follows...

Raphael - Eliminated week 1 - Straight
Pritesh - Eliminated week 1 - Straight
Demetrius - Eliminated week 2 - Gay
George - Eliminated week 2 - Straight
Lee - Eliminated week 3 - Gay
Peter - Eliminated week 3 - Gay
