Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first leg of the race, teams' first destination was Christ the Redeemer atop which mountain in Rio de Janeiro?

Answer: Corcovado Mountain

Christ the Redeemer, also known as Cristo Redentor, overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro and marks the first destination of the eleven teams competing in this season. Other major sites visited by the teams in Rio included Copacabana beach (for a Detour option), Sugarloaf Mountain, and Paqueta Island to kiss 'Fat Maria'. Teams also visited the first-ever off-shore Pit Stop; the mat was located aboard the Tocorimé, a yacht off the shore of Urca Beach.

In Leg 2, teams were able to complete a Detour task in which they could hang glide over Rio in a once in a lifetime event.
2. In Leg 2, teams went onward to Brazil's Foz do Iguacu. Which of these did teams complete at this location?

Answer: Road Block

In the end of Leg 2, teams needed to take a twenty-two hour bus ride out of Rio de Janeiro and travel hundreds of miles to the south of Brazil. Reaching Iguaçu Falls in Iguaçu National Park, teams completed the very first Road Block of the race in which one member of each had to board a boat, brave some rapids, and locate a flag in the Devil's Throat, a vantage point looking within the basin of the Brazilian and Argentinean falls. Teams traveled to a nearby jungle encampment in the park for the second Pit Stop at which point Hope and Norm were eliminated in tenth place.
3. In Leg 3, teams flew to Cape Town, South Africa and visited Robben Island, most specifically the cell of which famous prisoner?

Answer: Nelson Mandela

In Leg 3, teams made an exceedingly-lengthy journey taking them from Sao Paolo, Brazil, connecting through Europe, and ending in Cape Town, South Africa, thousands of miles away. Upon dropping down at the tip of Africa, teams needed to take a ferry to Robben Island to find their next clue hidden in a locker in former South African President Nelson Mandela's cell, Section B Cell 5.

The teams' journey through South Africa included a stop at a harbour in Kalk Bay, a trip into the post-Apartheid town of Langa, and a visit to a Pit Stop in wine country at Stellenbosch's Lanzerac Manor.
4. A major landmark visited in Leg 4 was Swakopmund Lighthouse, a site seen by teams in which African country?

Answer: Namibia

Taking a charter flight from South Africa, teams went to Namibia and reached Swakopmund Lighthouse for their first clue. This set teams up on a journey through Africa including a hike up and ride down the Matterhorn Sand Dune and a trip into the savannah to visit a village market. Teams finished their stay in Namibia at the Amani Lodge near Windhoek, the capital city, where Shola and Doyin were eliminated, unable to complete any of the tasks in Namibia due to a series of unfortunate events ranging from a prior injury in Brazil to getting a car stuck in the desert.
5. In Leg 5, teams collected a Detour clue at the Erawan Shrine in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia.

Answer: False

The Erawan Shrine was the first stop on the teams' trip through Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, in Leg 5. Traveling there from Namibia, teams needed to take a local train to this Detour task which asked them to either visit the markets of Bangkok or ride along the city's intricate canals.

While in Thailand, teams visited a temple dedicated to the worship of bats and, in Leg 6, the rural regions of the northerly Chiang Mai Province culminating with cleaning elephants and spending time in a local village during the sixth Pit Stop.
6. In Leg 7, teams needed to visit the tallest building in which highly-populated city?

Answer: Hong Kong

Departing from Northern Thailand, teams flew their way to the city of Hong Kong in Leg 7 and were told to climb to the top of the tallest tower on the skyline, Central Plaza. Once there, with a vantage point high above the rest of Hong Kong, teams needed to take the Star Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui and, inevitably, a shipping yard in Kwai Chung for the Road Block.

The seventh leg of the race ended with Mary and Peach unable to compete a disgusting Detour task involving a foul-tasting tea. Teams checked in on a floating Pit Stop, the Duk Ling, a junk in Victoria Harbour.
7. In Legs 8 and 9, teams completed tasks in and around Sydney, Australia. Which of these landmarks was not visited during the race?

Answer: Oceanworld Manly

In Leg 8, teams needed to leave Hong Kong for Sydney, Australia where they could find their Road Block clue at the Sydney Opera House. This involved sending team members on a scavenger hunt through the streets of Sydney. The Pit Stop for the eighth leg of the race, the rooftop of the Museum of Contemporary Art, saw none of the remaining five teams eliminated.

In Leg 9, teams began their next journey by signing up for a walk up the Sydney Harbour Bridge-- they received their clues at the top.
8. In the Australian outback in leg 9, teams reached the town of Coober Pedy and needed to find a large statue of which of these?

Answer: A metal tree

After finishing up with their tasks in Sydney, Australia, teams needed to take a plane to the city of Adelaide and then an additional charter flight to the Australian Outback, specifically Coober Pedy, known for its opal mines. Here, while Chris and Alex went directly to the Pit Stop at an aboriginal camp in The Breakaways, the other teams completed tasks relating to mining and boomerangs. Amongst the tasks was the locating of a large, metal tree in the middle of the desert; this would feature teams' Detour task, a choice between descending into an opal mine and playing a round of golf on one of the world's hottest golf courses.
9. In Leg 10, teams walked out onto the Nevis Highwire Platform in which type of task?

Answer: Detour

In Leg 10, teams needed to get through the Australian Outback, then fly themselves over the sea to New Zealand's south island and the city of Queenstown. In New Zealand, teams embarked on several tasks involving extreme adventures. At the Nevis Highwire, New Zealand's tallest bungee, teams completed a Detour task while Blake and Paige completed Leg 10's Fast Forward by going speedboating.

In Leg 11, teams crossed to the north island of New Zealand to descend into a cave (for a Detour) and go off-roading (for the Road Block). Only three teams remained at the completion of the eleventh leg.
10. Arriving at the Finish Line at East Fort Baker, teams completed "The Amazing Race 2" in which American city?

Answer: San Francisco

After completing the twelfth leg of the race in Maui, Hawaii, as well as a series of tasks in Anchorage, Alaska, teams proceeded to their final destination city: San Francisco, California. Teams located clues at the Atkinson-Esher House and the Municipal Pier before hopping into taxis and racing to the race's Finish Line, East Fort Baker.

In one of the closest finishes in "Amazing Race" history, Chris and Alex stepped on the mat mere seconds ahead of Wil and Tara to claim the one million dollar prize.
