Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first leg of the race, teams drove to Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania. The task here involved crossing what river?

Answer: The Delaware

For the first leg of the race, teams needed to head out from Manhattan in New York City and drive themselves southward to Washington Crossing State Park on the state line between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Arriving here, each team of four needed to take a rowboat containing a George Washington impersonator across the Delaware.

After an overnight camp-out at Fairmount Park, teams ended up completing a Detour task in Pennsylvania's Amish country before checking in at their first Pit Stop.
2. In Leg 2, many teams had problems locating a specific reflecting pool in what U.S. city?

Answer: Washington D.C.

Heading from Pennsylvania to the nation's capital, Washington D.C., teams needed to visit the reflecting pool situated in front of the U.S. Capitol. This proved difficult for many teams who accidentally visited the wrong reflecting pool in D.C. When they finally located their clue box, they inevitably completed a covert Road Block at the Tidal Basin before driving to Virginia to join in a historical war reenactment near Welbourne Manor and inevitably running on foot to the Pit Stop just off the battlefield.
3. The Pit Stop for Leg 3 was in front of what space shuttle in Huntsville, Alabama?

Answer: Pathfinder

Flying to Charleston, South Carolina and then taking a bus southward to Huntsville, Alabama, teams completed a number of tasks at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center involving space exploration. For instance, the Road Block for this leg involved two team members riding the site's centrifuge to experience high g-forces.

At the end of the leg, teams raced on foot to the Pit Stop in front of the Space Shuttle Pathfinder and the Aiello Family was eliminated from the race in eighth place.
4. In Leg 4, teams faced a task at Alabama's Talladega Superspeedway. They had to ride around the track in/on which of these?

Answer: Party-bikes

Continuing through Alabama and stopping at the World's Largest Office Chair, teams faced the massive track at Talladega Superspeedway on party-bikes (which could hold four people). This tasked proved emotional for the Weaver family as their father had died at a freak accident at that very racetrack.
After this task, teams continued along through the Southern States stopping in Mississippi and Louisiana before checking in at the fourth Pit Stop in New Orleans' famous French Quarter. This episode was filmed one month before the ravaging of Hurricane Katrina.
5. In Leg 5, teams visited Panama City, Panama. Miraflores Locks, depicted, contained which of the following?

Answer: Pit Stop

Finally leaving the United States, the remaining six teams flew south to Panama City to complete tasks in and around the old city. While the Paolo family snuck ahead of the pack via the Fast Forward task (a bungee plummet off a crane), the other teams rode Red Devil Buses through the city, stopped off at the beautiful Barro Colorado Island, and played a bit of baseball for this leg's Road Block task. Arriving at the Pit Stop at the Miraflores Locks, the Godlewski Family was in last place; luckily it was the first non-elimination leg.
6. In Leg 6, teams visited a peak in Poás Volcano National Park in what country?

Answer: Costa Rica

Leaving Panama City on a charter bus, the remaining six teams needed to complete a slew of exotic tasks in beautiful Costa Rica. After climbing to the top of the active Poás Volcano, teams needed to complete a needle-in-a-haystack-type Road Block (finding a single red coffee bean in a large pile of darker beans) and a Detour involving either bananas or rainforest totems.

This Road block would ultimately set the Gaghan Family back far enough to face elimination; they placed sixth overall.
7. During the race, teams visited the Grand Canyon.

Answer: True

This happened in Leg 8. After departing from Central America in Leg 7, teams flew to Phoenix, Arizona to begin their trip up through the mid-western United States. After completing a Road Block task in a fighter plane, teams visited the picturesque Grand Canyon at Lipan Point to receive their clue overlooking the Colorado River. Following this, teams completed a Detour task on the Colorado River before checking into their eighth Pit Stop at Lake Powell.
8. In Leg 10, teams visited what U.S. state containing Old Faithful?

Answer: Wyoming

Leaving Arizona in Leg 9, teams proceeded northward through Utah and then to Wyoming and Montana in Leg 10. In the first half of the double-length Leg 10, teams ventured into Wyoming after an overnight stay in a camper at Bear Lake Rendezvous Beach (in Utah). Arriving at Yellowstone National Park, the teams needed to wait to watch the famous geyser, Old Faithful, erupt.

This would occur once every hour (or longer), so teams needed to arrive early to catch it. After this, teams raced to the leg's midpoint at the Pinto Ranch in Moran, Wyoming before completing the second half.
9. In the final leg of the race, teams traveled to Montreal, Quebec to visit the Biosphere, a structure built for which of these events?

Answer: Expo '67

Leaving the United States one more time, the final three teams headed to Montreal, Quebec in the beginning of Leg 11. The third stop on this leg was the American Pavilion, also known as the Biosphere, constructed for Expo '67. Other tasks during this part of the leg included a detour choice of either curling at an arena or completing a log-rolling task and a lengthy task at the Montreal Stade Olympique where the teams needed to search the entire seating area around the main field for one of three departure times leaving for a mystery destination the next morning.
10. In the final stretch of the race, teams stopped at which tower in Toronto, Ontario?

Answer: CN Tower

When teams left Montreal they took a plane to Billy Bishop Airport on Toronto Island in Toronto, the capital city of Ontario. Once there, they needed to head to the top observation deck of the CN Tower, then the tallest building in the world. From there, teams headed to the harbour front on Lake Ontario and either completed a task at the Bata Shoe Museum or at the Queens Quay. Leaving Toronto, teams' final tasks took place at the Whirlpool Rapids near Niagara Falls, Ontario, a two hour drive southward to the American border, and they crossed back into New York to end the race in Lewiston. Crossing the finish line in Joseph Davis State Environmental Park in first place was the Linz Family; they won the million dollar prize.
