Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the first week of the competition, the designers had to be innovative with unique materials. Austin Scarlett's winning design used which of these?

Answer: Corn husks

In the first episode, twelve up-and-coming fashion designers headed to New York to begin the competition. Their first challenge was to create an innovative look using (to their shock) items bought in a typical grocery store for $50 or less. While some went with obvious options including aluminum foil and butcher paper, others opted for organic materials or plastic garden chair lining.

When push came to shove, Austin Scarlett, who used corn husks, ended up winning despite his dress drying out overnight.

He received immunity for the next week. In the end, Los Angeles designer Daniel Franco, who used butcher paper to create an unmoving vest, ended up being the first cut.
2. In week two, the designers had to make use of several yards of cotton to make an outfit. What keyword were they told to reflect in their design?

Answer: Envy

On the second week of the competition, the designers got up close and personal with "Project Runway's" sponsoring fabric: cotton. With fifty dollars and all the cotton jersey fabric they needed, designers had to evoke 'envy' in their design. In addition to this, the designers had their pieces placed into a silent auction at 30Vandam and the highest bid would result in the name of the person who would be granted immunity the following week. Kara Saun's dress, which sold for $405, resulted in the win. Meanwhile, Mario Cadenas was sent home for taking in the lowest bid.
3. In week three, the designers were asked to make a design that would fit into which fashion company's then-current line?

Answer: Banana Republic

In week three, the designers headed to Banana Republic's design studio to learn about the upcoming fashions for the company, specifically their colour stories involving rose colours and art deco inspirations. The designers were then told to make an evening gown dedicated to one of the two collections.

As they ended up making the dresses they were also informed that the winning design would be added to the collection, available for purchase and manufactured for Banana Republic stores and online services. Wendy Pepper made the winning garment while Starr, who combined the two styles to poor reviews, was cut.
4. The fourth week of the competition had the designers working together to make a garment for an aspiring rock musician. What was her name?

Answer: Sarah Hudson

Meeting with rising rock musician Sarah Hudson at the start of the week, the designers were asked to sketch out a look for her live shows which would fit her image. Ultimately she chose her three favourites-- Jay McCarroll, Austin Scarlett, and Kevin Johnn-- and they got to see their ideas through with two other designers on their teams. Kevin's outfit won the challenge despite a bit of frazzled behaviour from his teammates. Austin's was deemed the worst of the three while Vanessa Riley was sent home because she felt she was the weakest of the three designers since she was the least proficient with a sewing machine.

The judges felt that she was underselling herself and she was cut.
5. Halfway through the competition, the designers were told to make wedding dresses for whom?

Answer: Their models

In the fifth week, the designers chose their models and were shocked to find that they would be creating garments for them as their clients. With this in mind, they needed to learn what the girls wanted (the dresses of their dreams, at all costs) and inject their own flair into it.

While some girls did not like the finished product, others were so happy that they brought their boyfriends in to give their input. While the top and bottom designs were worn by girls who loved their outfits, Kara Saun's was the only winner amongst the judges while Nora Caliguri's was considered too traditional and lacking her own style.
6. Making swimsuits in week six, whose model wrecked their outfit during a night out?

Answer: Kevin's

In week six, the designers were tasked with making unique swimsuits which could double as evening-wear for a party that night with "New York Post" 'Page Six' writer Richard Johnson. After the party, Kevin Johnn's problem model, Morgan, decided to wear the outfit out to the club and it ended up getting torn.

Despite this, he survived the proceeding judging in second-to-last place. Alexandra Vidal was sent home for not seeking inspiration from herself (instead from other models). The following day the winner, Austin Scarlett, was written up in "New York Post" for his classical 1930s/1940s glamour swimsuit.
7. In week seven the designers worked together to create a collection for people in 2055. Who led the group?

Answer: Kevin

This week, the final six designers were told that they would be working together to create their own cohesive collection framed around the theme of 'fashion in 2055'. They could take it to whatever futuristic thought they wanted but, to their surprise, they needed to purchase all of their materials from a vintage clothing store and reconstitute them for their pieces. Kevin Johnn was randomly selected to be the team leader and it was ultimately he who was cut from the competition for his lack of leadership and his outfit-- the only one considered too far removed from the others. Kara Saun won the task once again with a versatile, multi-functional outfit.
8. During the eighth week of the competition, the which designer voluntarily walked on the runway?

Answer: Austin

In week eight the designers were given $100 and were told that they would need to make new uniforms to be won by female United States Postal Service workers on the job. The outfits needed to be comfortable and full of utility. While some created stylish garments (and Kara Saun won for a fourth time in the competition), it was Robert Plotkin, whose charm got him through so many rounds, who was cut.

In a surprising moment, Jay's model, Julia, was unable to make it for the runway show. In her place, Austin stepped up to model his opponent's outfit.
9. The final four competitors were tasked with creating what kind of outfit for Nancy O'Dell?

Answer: Red carpet gown

Meeting with Heidi during their final challenge, the designers were informed that their last garment before fashion week would be a dress to be worn on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. They later determined that they would be making it for "Access Hollywood" host Nancy O'Dell.

In addition, they would be assisted by Robert, who was eliminated the previous week, and they would be given $300 to shop for materials. To the surprise of the designers, Wendy Pepper's outfit was deemed ideal for the red carpet (after slight modifications) and she won an automatic in for Olympus Fashion Week. Austin Scarlett, whose look was deemed too derivative of his other works, was the final designer cut.
10. What designer won season one of "Project Runway"?

Answer: Jay

With five months and eight thousand dollars each, the final three designers were sent home to work on their twelve-garment capsule collections for a runway show during Olympus Fashion Week. When they finally arrived back in New York City they were all given a single hotel room and a week to prepare, hire models, and make finishing touches. Despite minor issues with each collection, they had their show and reunited in front of the judging panel. Wendy Pepper placed third after her show was considered too non-cohesive. Kara Saun, whose Howard Hughes-inspired collect was deemed as perfectly-fitting, came second. Jay McCarroll's collection, inspired by women listening to music on a busy street, won him the grand prize of $100,000 and a Banana Republic mentorship.

After the show he opted out of the winnings citing that a 10% cut of his earnings needed to go to "Project Runway".
