Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of "The Bolar Wars", where is the space cruiser Argo?

Answer: Being rebuilt in the Canadian Rockies

By the time "The Bolar Wars" had begun, the Argo had logged billions of miles of travel and thousands of hours of combat. In this series, the Argo sports white anchors on her rear flanks and just above the wave-motion gun aperture on the bow.
2. In what year does "The Bolar War" series begin?

Answer: 2203

Nearly two years had passed between the Star Force's defeat of the Comet Empire and their involvement in the war between the Galman Empire and the Bolar Federation.
3. Which of these original Star Force members was NOT part of the crew during "The Bolar Wars"?

Answer: Patrick Orion

According to one Star Blazers/Yamato website, www.desslok.com, Orion was killed during the Argo's battle against the Comet Empire. Sandor (science officer and co-executive officer), Dash (gunnery) and Nova (support) returned for a third tour of duty on board the Argo.
4. Runaway solar fusion causes the Sun to increase in size and increase temperatures on Earth. What event triggers this runaway fusion?

Answer: A planet-killing missile (launched by the Galman Empire)

During a battle between the Galman Empire and the Bolar Federation, a giant Proton planet-killer missile strays off course, hitting Earth's sun. The resulting explosion causes an increase in solar fusion and will ultimately lead to the Solar System's doom.
5. Heading away from Earth, the Argo's captain, Derek Wildstar, conducts a series of exhausting combat drills near what planet?

Answer: Mars

Because so many members of the Star Force had never seen combat, Wildstar decided to test them with an exhausting round of drills, including gunnery, fire fighting and first aid.
6. The Star Force winds up getting into the middle of the conflict between the Galman Empire and the Bolar Federation by giving aid to a spacecraft from which planet?

Answer: Berth

Captain Ram and his fleet, spearheaded by the flagship Legendra, try valiantly to prevent the Galman fleet from overrunning his planet. Though the Star Force does its best to protect him, they prove to be too little, too late.
7. Which longtime foe of the Star Force heads up the Galman Empire?

Answer: Leader Desslok

Early on, Desslok is unaware that the Eastern Task Force, under General Dagon, is engaged with the Argo. His key leaders, including Admiral Smeerdon, do not supply him with this information. In "The Comet Empire", Desslok told the Star Force the key to defeating Prince Zordar and his Comet Empire.
8. The Star Force winds up rescuing an old man, his daughter, and his son-in-law from the planet Barnard. Why had this family become stranded on the planet?

Answer: The old man destroyed their spaceship on purpose

Seeking to become a pioneer in a new land, the old man had led his family to Barnard, which at first seemed to have all the resources that they needed. But when his daughter and her husband wanted to go back to Earth, the old man blew up their spaceship, stranding them there and exposing them to a mysterious disease. Dr. Sane treated both the old man and his son-in-law, and discovered that the daughter was pregnant.
9. What does Desslok do when he finds out the Eastern Task Force has captured the Argo?

Answer: He orders the release of the Argo and her crew

Admiral Smeerdon thought he was giving Desslok a wonderful birthday present by capturing the Argo and her crew. But Desslok, considered the Star Force his friends, and ordered their immediate release. In fact, he asked them to come to his new home planet, Galmania.
10. What is the last name of the Galman scientist who attempts (and ultimately fails) to save the Sun from destruction?

Answer: Kranshaw

Galman's top scientist, assisted by Sandor, uses magnetic fields, asteroids and a Proton planet-killer missile to try and reverse the runaway fusion of the Sun. From there, things get worse, as the Sun's fusion increases even more. Disgraced by the failure, Kranshaw dives his ship directly into the Sun.
11. Desslok tells the Star Force of an Earth-like planet that may be available for colonization. What is the name of that planet?

Answer: Phantom

Located about 10,000 light-years from Galmania, Phantom looks like Earth to the members of the Star Force and like Galmania to the Galman survey team that follows the Argo. Phantom gives off a strange energy that allows those who land on it to see what they wish. Ultimately, Desslok orders Phantom's destruction because he feels it has embarrassed him and the Star Force.
12. Continuing their search for a new home, the Star Force ends up rescuing the queen of a secretive empire. What was that queen's name?

Answer: Mariposa

When Bolar Federation Prime Minister Bemlayze exiled the benevolent queen of the planet Guardiana to Phantom, he believed it to be a frozen planet that would not support life. But Phantom, being a living planet, protected the queen long enough for the Star Force to wisk her to safety.
13. The Argo's crew, at last, is led to the Earth-like planet Guardiana. But instead of leading humans there, the Guardianans give the Star Force a special weapon that may save the Earth. What is the name of that weapon?

Answer: Hydro cosmo penultimate cannon

The inhabitants of Guardiana had long since buried their weapons of mass destruction--weapons more powerful and advanced than anything in any Earth-based arsenal--in ancient tombs. They were committed to the ideal that true peace could be achieved without violence of any kind.

But they understood that good could come of one of their mighty weapons. Queen Mariposa and her staff give the Star Force the cannon in hopes that they can save Earth.
14. As the Argo prepares to fire its Sun-saving cannon, a Bolar Federation fleet warps into the Solar System and attacks. During the attack, the cover protecting the cannon jams. Which member of the Star Force puts his life at risk to get the cover open?

Answer: Jason Jenner

Jenner's death provided a very poignant bookend to the opening action of "The Bolar Wars". Jenner's parents were killed at the beginning of the story, when the Bolar's planet-killing missile rammed their sightseeing spacecraft en route to the Sun. He would overcome his initial disappointment at not being picked for the Cosmo Tigers and become an influential member of the team, after serving a little KP duty.
15. "The Bolar Wars" was originally slated to be the most ambitious adventure of the "Star Blazers" series. However, the series ended up being only 25 episodes. How many episodes were originally planned?

Answer: 52

Among "Star Blazers" purists, the original television presentation of "The Bolar Wars" was nothing short of a travesty. Rushed production work and different voice actors were among the key problems. But in 2002, Voyager Entertainment began releasing "The Bolar Wars" on DVD, complete with the original opening and closing credits and theme music--a fitting tribute to one of the great franchises in animation history.
