quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two prisoners in the Enterprise brig assemble a makeshift weapon from a collection of separate parts hidden throughout their clothes.

Answer: "Heart of Glory"

The two prisoners are Klingon officers who had gone AWOL in order to pursue a life of "honorable" combat. One of the pieces for the weapon was taken from the boot of their dead comrade. They use the weapon to escape the brig, though only one of them makes it out alive.
2. The away team finds the trapped colonists they were looking for, but Geordi notices someone under a pile of rubble. Data clears away the rubble, and it turns out to be the body of a little, dead girl.

Answer: "Hide and Q"

Q gives Riker omnipotent powers, but Picard advises him to resist the urge to use those powers in order to maintain his humanity. While Riker does indeed refuse to restore the dead girl to life, this event pushes him over the edge and convinces him that he should embrace those powers.
3. Riker plays some jazz in a seedy bar.

Answer: "11001001"

The Bynars, a race of creatures who've become interlinked with a powerful computer on their home world, come on board the ship to upgrade its computer. They plan to steal the ship, but first they lure Riker into the Holodeck using the sophisticated image of a woman exactly tailored to his preferences. Riker plays a trombone to win her affections, and after Picard drops by as well, they end up being the only two people remaining on the hijacked ship.
4. Riker meets an old friend of his down on the surface of an otherwise desolate planet, but that friend begins interrogating Riker about all sorts of information pertaining to the Enterprise and Starfleet.

Answer: "The Arsenal of Freedom"

That "friend" is an artificial recreation of Captain Rice, created by a powerful computer that is also responsible for the weapon systems attacking the away team on the planet, as well as the Enterprise in orbit. This fake Captain Rice attempts to pump Riker for information that would help the computer in its attacks.
5. Troi is trying to teach Captain Picard a complex language for an address that he would have to deliver (with extreme precision) to an alien race.

Answer: "The Big Goodbye"

Although this episode is primarily about the Holodeck, the framing story involves Picard having to deliver a precise message to an alien race in their own language, at a precise time. This becomes a problem when he gets trapped inside the Holodeck, and Riker has to stall for time.
6. The bridge is burning around Picard, as he gives the order to abandon ship.

Answer: "The Battle"

The titular battle actually occurred years ago, aboard Picard's old ship, the Stargazer. However, he is now repeatedly hallucinating the final events from that battle, where he had to order the Stargazer to be abandoned. This is all the work of the dastardly Ferengi, who have yet to turn into the designated comic relief race of the show's later seasons and spin-offs.
7. Picard has a short conversation with his mother.

Answer: "Where No One Has Gone Before"

A conversation between Picard and his mother wouldn't be a notable event if she hadn't been dead for several years. In this episode, the Enterprise is flung to the edge of the universe, where apparently reality and thought are practically interchangeable, enabling such an event to occur at all.
8. A powerful force is preventing the away team from beaming back up to the ship, until Picard gives a passionate speech about the necessity of flexible laws.

Answer: "Justice"

Wesley Crusher manages to get himself sentenced to death on a planet with only a single law. It also turns out that the law is protected by powerful beings who watch over that world, and prevent Picard from rescuing Wesley. Picard eventually gives a speech about how all laws must be bendable, simultaneously justifying his own transgression against the Prime Directive.
9. Data creates a guitar for one of the Enterprise's guests.

Answer: "The Neutral Zone"

When three humans from the 1980's are found in a cryogenic satellite adrift in deep space, they are brought on the Enterprise and revived. One of them is a country singer, who spends most of his time talking about parties, drugs, and women. He befriends Data, who later replicates a classic guitar for him. Strangely, while this plot is going on, a second plot deals with a much more important issue: Contact with the Romulans for the first time in decades.
10. The Enterprise beams aboard a box full of colorful gems.

Answer: "Haven"

The gems are a dowry for Deanna Troi's arranged marriage to a human she had barely met before. This is also the first appearance of Lwaxana Troi, her mother, who comes aboard mainly to behave insufferably. The wedding, however, fails to take place when the groom discovers that he was actually longing for someone else, forcing the issue.
11. Data is all alone on the bridge of the Enterprise, because all other officers are either down on the planet or stricken with disease.

Answer: "Angel One"

The away team is down on a planet run by a matriarchy, attempting to locate the crew of a downed Federation ship. In the meanwhile, a deadly disease breaks out on the Enterprise (and fails to kill anybody), infecting everyone but Data, who at one point ends up being completely alone on the bridge.
12. Riker, Worf and Geordi all fight the same person in hand-to-hand combat, but he defeats every one of them easily, until finally shot by Dr. Crusher.

Answer: "Conspiracy"

That person is Admiral Quinn, a fairly old man, who has been taken over by a strange and malicious creature. This gives him enough strength to actually defeat Worf, but not enough to withstand three prolonged phaser bursts to the chest - on "kill" setting!
13. Geordi is standing in an observation deck, sweating profusely and lamenting to Tasha Yar about his inability to see like other people.

Answer: "The Naked Now"

In this episode, everyone on the Enterprise is drunk - in homage to (and continuation of) the "Star Trek" Original Series episode "The Naked Time". Geordi gets infected with the drunken disease first, which he passes on to Tasha, who then goes sex-crazed and eventually even manages to get Data in the sack.

This is the first of several season 1 episodes where Wesley saves the day at the end.
14. Wesley talks to a computer called "The Custodian", asking the computer to keep quiet.

Answer: "When the Bough Breaks"

Wesley and some other bright children from the Enterprise are kidnapped down to a planet, where the locals have become sterile and hope that these children will provide them with some sort of posterity. Wesley uses the local maintenance computer, the "Custodian", to locate the other children and attempt to convene a meeting to discuss their escape.
15. Name the episode in which Data reveals to Dr. Crusher that he has an on/off switch embedded in his lower back.

Answer: Datalore

In this episode we discover not only how Data was made and how he was found by Starfleet, but also that he is not the only android of his kind. Unfortunately, the other android turns out to be his evil brother Lore, who attempts to betray the Enterprise to a hungry space creature, and uses the aforementioned on/off switch to neutralize Data.

This won't be the last member of Data's family we'll get to see in later episodes, though.
