Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many returning castaways appeared in this season?

Answer: None

On the first day of the competition, the twenty competitors paddled their way to the shores of Samoa where they were immediately split into two teams (pre-decided, before the game began). Jeff told them that they were all ready to go, but before they could head out they needed to choose one person from each tribe to be the leader simply based on body language and first impression.

This person would make important decisions for the tribe as they went along. The Galu tribe (wearing purple) chose Russell S. and the Foa Foa tribe (wearing yellow) chose Mick.
2. Who was removed on Day 5 due to an injury sustained in a challenge?

Answer: Mike

During the tribes' second challenge, a joint Reward/Immunity outing, teams needed to compete against one another in a dangerous game involving balls, baskets, and physical exertion. During this task, Mike was hit so many times that Jeff called for the medical team as soon as it ended.

They decided to pull him from the game immediately due to the injuries he sustained; this was the earliest anyone had been pulled from "Survivor" to date. Despite this early ousting, someone was eliminated from the game at the next Tribal Council ceremony on Day 6. This was also the first challenge in which someone was pulled for rough play; Ben tripped Russell S.
3. What tribe dominated during the game in the first half of the competition by winning numerous challenges in a row?

Answer: Galu

In ten challenges before the merge (two of which were combined Reward and Immunity Challenges), Galu won a total of eight. This included all but one Immunity Challenge. As a result, Galu won all of the rewards except the initial flint earned by Foa Foa during the opening challenge of the game.

This season, like "Palau" and "Gabon", demonstrated that strong, well-managed tribes get ahead. Galu's streak was one of the most notable in the history of the game. Unfortunately, this translated to a mass elimination streak after the merge.
4. In this season, tribes were allowed to send one member to the other simply to observe. When did this occur?

Answer: After the Reward Challenge

Beginning on Day 5, the winning tribe during the Reward Challenge was able to send a member of their own team to the losing tribe's camp simply to observe. In addition, that observer would be able to follow clues to a Hidden Immunity Idol-- there would be one hidden at each camp. Throughout the course of the game, because Galu won all subsequent Reward Challenges, Yasmin was sent once, Shambo was sent twice, and Laura was sent once.

When the merge occurred, this new game mechanic was shelved since there were not two opposing tribes.
5. Who collapsed during the challenge on Day 15?

Answer: Russell S.

During a challenge on Day 15, Russell S., the 'leader' of Galu, ended up collapsing midway through the competition. The challenge was immediately ended and the medical team ended up coming in to make the judgment call. When Russell blacked out twice during his examination, he was told that he would not be able to continue; he became the second Galu casualty in the game (after Yasmin was voted out). No other Galu members would be taken out before the merge. Considering the events of Day 15, no team went to Tribal Council that evening. Shambo was nominated the new leader of Galu in his place.
6. What was the name of the merged tribe in this season?

Answer: Aiga

Twelve people united on Day 19 on an empty beach to receive their new blue buffs and a tribe flag. They were told that they would be merging on Galu's beach for the latter half of the game. This was the first time in which twelve people were on the merged tribe (there had yet to be that many people on a tribe in "Survivor's" history).

The group settled on the name Aiga, a word recalled to mean 'distant relations' or 'extended family'. Foa Foa merged with only four members to Galu's eight.
7. Russell located more than one Hidden Immunity Idol.

Answer: True

On Day 4, Russell located a Hidden Immunity Idol resting within a tree located within the Foa Foa tribe's campsite without using any clues whatsoever-- Jeff hadn't even alluded to the possibility of an idol in play during this season. On Day 21 he used the Hidden Immunity Idol to protect himself though no votes were cast against him.

He later used a second idol to protect himself from elimination on Day 22 and Kelly was sent to the jury in his place. He found a third idol shortly after. The only other person to locate a Hidden Immunity Idol before the merge was Erik of the Galu tribe.

He did not use it, however, as he was blindsided during the first post-merge Tribal Council ceremony.
8. How many tie votes occurred during this season of the show?

Answer: One

In sixteen total voting ceremonies during this season (including the final Tribal Council for the winner), only one vote was a tie on Day 27. During this important 'turning point' vote, five voted for Laura and five voted for Natalie in an attempt to prevent the original Foa Foa four from advancing with the numbers.

A re-vote resulted in a five-to-three elimination in which Laura made her exit from the game as the third jury member. Had a second tie occurred at this Tribal Council, the purple rock tiebreaker would've occurred.
9. Did the nine-person jury consist solely of original Galu members?

Answer: No

While most of the jury consisted of mostly Galu members considering their major numbers advantage at the beginning of the merge (they went in with eight members to Foa Foa's four), Jaison, of the Foa Foa tribe, was eliminated second-to-last in the fifth place position. Aside from him, the final five contained one Galu member and three other Foa Foa members indicating a major shift in the dynamic of the game.

The jury contained Erik, Kelly, Laura, John, Dave, Monica, Shambo, Jaison, and Brett.
10. Who won this nineteenth season of "Survivor"?

Answer: Natalie

During the final Tribal Council, nine former castaways from Aiga needed to vote for Natalie, Russell, or Mick to win the million dollars. While two votes went to Russell from Shambo and John, the other seven went to Natalie because she managed to befriend the opposing tribe and avoid elimination long enough to strategize her way through the social game.

She became the nineteenth winner of "Survivor". After the season aired, fans of the show voted Russell H. as the 'Player of the Season' and he also won $100,000.
