Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Big Brother' is often mentioned in the UK as part of "dumbing down" discussions. Many despised its lingering presence on UK television whilst others made their pilgrimage to the 'Big Brother' house on eviction nights. The British version started back in 2000 but which of the terrible tenants won the show and the cash prize?

Answer: Craig Phillips

Compared to more recent series, the inaugural 'Big Brother' was much less controversial and had few of the shenanigans that characterised the show in later years. The first winner of the British version was Craig Phillips, but it was Nick Bateman that courted most attention.

His attempts to discuss voting patterns were noticed by the all-seeing eye and he would thus enter the league of the most infamous reality TV stars of all time.
2. Some 'Big Brother' housemates are received more favourably by the British public than others. There is usually a "villain", somebody who is so horrible that it feels like a home intrusion when they appear on your screen. There is also an audience favourite who, with a bit of luck, goes on to win the show. Which ever so slightly camp Irishman won the 2001 series of Britain's 'Big Brother'?

Answer: Brian Dowling

Brian Dowling's career after leaving the house is an example of what a 'Big Brother' winner can come to expect. Not only did Dowling win the cash prize offered by the show but he also became reasonably famous for presenting and narrating other reality TV shows.
3. There are a few 'Big Brother' housemates who really do deserve the title of terrible tenant and this includes Sandy Cumming from Britain's third series. What did Sandy do to gain his fifteen minutes of notoriety in 2002?

Answer: Climbing onto the roof

The ability to witness the medium-term change in the psychological state of the housemates is one of the selling points of 'Big Brother'. Some of the terrible tenants love the limelight and others aren't at all concerned with the confinement that the house provides. Sandy Cumming proved to be of another distinct category, a group of people who loathed the lack of freedom and absence of any intellectual activity.

In order to escape the house and all of its faults, he climbed onto the roof but failed to achieve his goal.

He was told to leave the 'Big Brother' house shortly after his somewhat dangerous stunt.
4. As many Brits groaned when the fourth series of 'Big Brother' hit the screens, another opportunity arose for someone to make themselves famous for, well, doing nothing I guess! The 2003 series of Britain's 'Big Brother' is now regarded as the most boring of all time. The winner of the series, Cameron Stout, got the chance to become a housemate in another version of the show. Which country did Cameron visit?

Answer: South Africa

Cameron Stout, from the Orkney Islands, was a rather unlikely winner of 'Big Brother' in 2003. As a devoted Christian and proud virgin, Stout would seem to be the exact opposite of what the public had come to expect the winner of the show to be. At the same time the Scotsman was in the British 'Big Brother' house the franchise was extending to other continents.

As part of the inauguration of 'Big Brother Africa', Stout was invited to swap places with one of the African contestants for a short while.
5. 'Big Brother' has often been criticised for its selection of housemates. It is true that there haven't been many "normal" people on the show however, the programme's ratings depend on the interest value of the housemates. Which of the terrible tenants from the 2004 series of Britain's 'Big Brother', notable for being transsexual, won the show?

Answer: Nadia Almada

Nadia Almada, originally Jorge Leodoro, was born on the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. Her victory was seen to be a great step forward for the transsexual and transgender community in the United Kingdom as the public knew about her sex change upon her introduction. Almada, after her 'Big Brother' victory, would go on to do what all top reality TV stars do and create a fitness DVD! I am sure the DVD is available in all good bargain buckets near you.
6. It was a small mercy that the British version of 'Big Brother' was shown after the 9pm watershed. With terrible tenants partaking in a variety of tasteless activities, 'Big Brother' developed a reputation for being uncouth. Which of the following did 2005 housemate Makosi Musambasi claim during her time on 'Big Brother'?

Answer: She was pregnant

Makosi Musambasi's story was really rather remarkable. During one episode she was seen being intimate with the eventual winner of the series, Anthony Hutton, and within the same week she was claiming to be pregnant as a result! Nobody really knows whether she conceived whilst in the 'Big Brother' house (though the likelihood is slim) but I think there is a question of much greater importance. Does anybody really care?
7. Many of the winners of Britain's 'Big Brother' have managed to endear themselves to the viewing public. This was certainly the case with the winner of the 2006 series, Pete Bennett. Which of the following syndromes did Pete have?

Answer: Tourette syndrome

Pete Bennett was one of the first people on British TV to be seen to have Tourette syndrome. The syndrome seemed to add to his likeable character and he was a favourite with the bookmakers to win the 2006 series of 'Big Brother' from the very first week. Any bets against Pete winning would have meant a loss of money as he would emerge victorious, as expected, with well over 50% of the vote in the final.
8. The eighth series of Britain's 'Big Brother' proved to be a record breaker in many ways. A few records were set by the eventual winner of the controversial show when a Nigerian became the first black contestant to win. What was the name of the winner of 'Big Brother' in 2007, who also held the record of being the youngest ever victor?

Answer: Brian Belo

Brian Belo was born in Nigeria and originally went by the name of Olawale Belo. He was fostered at a young age by a UK family and at the age of twenty became the youngest winner of the UK version of 'Big Brother'. During his stint as a terrible tenant in the 'Big Brother' house he admitted to not knowing about William Shakespeare! After his victory he gained employment with gossip magazines and often reported on later series of 'Big Brother'.
9. The 2008 series of 'Big Brother' saw yet another first for the British version of the successful franchise. When Michael "Mikey" Hughes entered the 'Big Brother' house he was the first ___ person to become a housemate. What word(s) fills the blank?

Answer: Blind

It took nine series before a blind person was selected as a 'Big Brother' housemate. "Mikey" very nearly made it all the way to victory but couldn't gather up enough votes from the public to win the cash prize. After coming second in the 2008 'Big Brother' series, Michael Hughes tried his luck in a by-election in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

He wasn't as successful in his political endeavours as he was in the world of reality TV managing to poll just over fifty votes with the winning candidate polling over 12,000.
10. A few of the contestants featured on the many British series of 'Big Brother' are used to having to gain votes to win a competition. A terrible tenant from 2009, Charlie Drummond, came fourth in series 10 but had come second in what competition prior to becoming a housemate?

Answer: Mr Gay UK

Charlie Drummond did indeed place second in the Mr Gay UK competition after winning a regional heat in 2007 thus becoming Mr Gay Newcastle! Whilst in the house he became involved in the first gay relationship in the ten years of 'Big Brother' being on British screens.

His supposed love interest was a Brazilian student, Rodrigo Lopes, and they were seen to have a love-hate relationship. No Oscars were awarded for this production, let me tell you!
