Hannah Baker had committed suicide a week earlier, and it was a waning topic amongst her fellow classmates. But, Clay was seemingly haunted by her absence and we saw him remembering her in flashbacks. Tony Padilla offered Clay a ride home, and played a music cassette tape for him. When Clay walked up to his front door, the package with her tapes was sitting on his front porch. He used his father's boombox to play the first tape, and was shocked when he heard her voice. At the end of episode one, Clay had finished the first side of the first cassette, side A, and Tony told him it was probably time for the other side.

Katherine Langford played Hannah. Dylan Minnette played Clay. Christian Navarro played Tony. Dylan has also starred on the original "Prison Break" series, "Scandal", and "Saving Grace".

Hannah and Jessica's friendship had been arranged by their school counselor because the girls were both new to Liberty High. Despite the awkwardness of that, they did become very close friends. And, when they found a new boy named Alex drinking alone, they created a three-way bestie situation inside Monet's coffee shop. But, "friendships are complicated" and their happiness did not last after Justin Foley took an inappropriate photo of Hannah without her knowing. In episode one, Hannah's narration said everything starting to go downhill when that photo was texted to most of the school. Miles Heizer played Alex, and Alisha Boe played Jessica. Fans of the NBC series "Parenthood" may remember Miles as Drew Holt (son of Sarah Braverman, played by Lauren Graham). Alisha had a small role in one episode of "Parenthood" as well, and played Gwen on the MTV series "Teen Wolf".

Central Perk was featured on "Friends", Espresso Pump was on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", and Cafe Grumpy was on "Girls".

When Alex and Clay talked inside Monet's, Alex was surprised that Clay hadn't gotten to hearing his own tape. He told Clay that he'd listened to all of the tapes the first night he had them, and then listened to them one more time, but slower. Clay said he was not able to listen to much at one time because it caused him anxiety. Bryce had started the list, and in order to make Jessica angry, Alex had added her name and Hannah's name. On their list topic, he had Hannah listed as best and Jessica as worst. Jessica took it to mean that Hannah had sex with Alex at some point, instead of being mad at Alex, who actually deserved her anger. Hannah narrated that this was moment number two, after Justin's photo incident, that led her down a path of suicide.

Tyler had already been seen taking photos in the previous episodes. He started following Hannah, and even took pictures outside of her bedroom window. So, with the help of Courtney Crimsen, Hannah discovered his identity. Clay confronted Tyler, and he said that he'd loved Hannah and hadn't intended to be creepy. But, when Hannah confronted Tyler, she had been less than enthused about his intentions and disregarded his interest. In retaliation, Tyler posted a picture of Hannah and Courtney kissing in her bedroom. Their identities weren't clear in the photo, but it wasn't too long before some of the guys started harassing Hannah about it.

Of course, everyone Clay confronted thus far, Marcus as well, had already listened to the tapes. Everyone reminded Clay he had to listen to HIS tape before he passed judgment on them. If his tape was also "lies", then Hannah had to be lying about everyone. Justin maintained to Jessica that Hannah was lying, Jessica felt that her tape was a misrepresentation of events, and Alex flat out said Hannah was lying as well (he later said it was all true). Courtney was not much different from Jessica, in saying it got out of hand with Hannah, but none of them was directly responsible for her suicide. Clay wanted her to realize that they were collectively responsible. So, he took her to Hannah's grave, and he explained it took a while before headstones were ready. Courtney became hysterical and left Clay there, but Tony had followed them and brought Clay's bike. Before Clay left, he wrote Hannah's name on a piece of paper and put it on her grave as a marker.

"Why me" was the question Hannah had asked Zach after he began stealing her compliments in their Communications class. He had been embarrassed by her when she yelled at him in the school cafeteria, and was paying her back for that humiliation. Clay keyed the car during a school basketball game in which Zach and Justin were both playing. Skye, who worked at Monet's and was once Clay's friend, caught him in the act of keying Zach's car. She said she liked this version of Clay and that he should "stay angry". The pressure of Hannah's tapes was too much for Clay, and his visual and auditory hallucinations were getting worse. Clay had been on medication and talk therapy in the past, but the reason for that was never revealed. Clay was grounded and would be paying for the damages to Zach's car. Clay also found out that one of Hannah's "facts" was not accurate when Zach revealed he had not trashed Hannah's letter (to him) as she had thought. Clay returned the tapes to Tony because he wanted to be done with them.

Tape 3, side B was Marcus's tape. Marcus had asked Hannah out because he thought she was easy, and humiliated her in front of his friends. Ross Butler played Zach and Steven Silver played Marcus. Ross has also appeared on "Teen Wolf" and "Riverdale".

He took it to the pharmacy and showed it to Olivia Baker, Hannah's mom. Tony had taken Clay up a rock face to get him ready to hear about how Tony had come to receive Hannah's tapes. She had been Tony's friend, and had taken the tapes to his house and left them by his door. He had seen her do it, but since she hadn't knocked or rang the doorbell, he allowed her to leave. After he listened to part of tape 1, he rushed over to her house, but she was already gone. Hannah had befriended Ryan in their mutual poetry workshop, and trusted him with her writing. She composed an amazing poem about her sadness, which Ryan urged her to publish. When she declined, he published it in his magazine without her permission. He left off her name, but it was yet another betrayal. Clay took the tapes back from Tony after his confession, and told Olivia Baker that Hannah had written an amazing poem. Mrs. Baker recognized her daughter's handwriting.

Hannah had cut her hair over the summer break between their sophomore and junior years, and decided she wouldn't hide away and stay invisible. I was not sure being invisible was really Hannah's problem. She and Clay both went to Jessica's "first party of the year", which Jessica had while her parents were out of town. The full story of that night was not revealed on this tape. But, Hannah did explain that once again Justin was at fault for not protecting Jessica from Bryce's assault. Jessica had feigned not remembering the night when questioned by Clay, but really she did remember his assault of her while she was too drunk to stop him. Justin knew it was happening and did not stop it, but it was clear that Justin was torn up about his lack of intervention. Bryce would later rape Hannah as well.

Clay was walking home from Jessica's party, while a distraught Hannah had taken a ride from Sheri. He heard the crash and ran to the location, and found Jeff fatally wounded in his car. There was smashed beer bottles in the passenger side floor of the front seats. The accident was determined to be a drunk driving incident. Clay learned from the tape that Sheri had actually hit the stop sign for that intersection just a bit earlier in the night, but refused to stay and report it. Hannah was almost dumbstruck that Sheri was willing to just leave, and refused to get back in the car. So, Sheri left Hannah to walk. Hannah did not have time to get to a store, borrow a phone, and call for help before the accident that killed Jeff and injured Mr. Cantrell. So, she felt guilty about Jeff's death. She tried to tell Clay what happened, but in his own grief he lashed out at Hannah about making everything into her own personal drama. He did not believe Jeff had been drunk that night, and after hearing the tape, he went to Jeff's parents and told them so. Sheri showed Clay that she had been helping the Cantrells in the months since the accident and was trying to make up for what she did.

Brandon Larracuente played Jeff and Dick Martin played Mr. Cantrell. Brandon also played Ben Rayburn on the Netflix series "Bloodline". Ajiona Alexus played Sheri. She's also appeared on "Empire".

Tony finally decided to reveal to the Bakers that Hannah had made the recordings. He gave them a USB drive with the recordings on it, including Bryce's rape confession made by Clay. In the end, most of the kids on the tapes decided to tell the truth, and Tyler even told the lawyers about the tapes. The season ended with Clay, Tony, Skye, and Robert driving together in Tony's car.
