Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first glimpse of Indy as a teenager shows him back in Princeton, New Jersey and attending high school. What was his after school job?

Answer: Soda jerk

16 year old Indy was played by the dreamy Sean Patrick Flanery. In high school, Indy was a typical American boy. He liked baseball, hot dogs, and, of course, girls. Nancy was the name of his high school sweetheart with whom he shared one of his adventures.

It started with the engine of Nancy's father's car malfunctioning and led to kidnapping and secret plans stolen from Thomas Edison's laboratory in Menlow Park. In the end, the plans were retrieved, and Mr. Edison fixed the car engine as a thank you to Indy and Nancy for helping to catch the thief.
2. While visiting relatives in New Mexico, Indy crossed the border into Mexico and ended up joining Pancho Villa's army. While in Mexico, Indy met and befriended a European named Remi. Where was Remi from?

Answer: Belgium

Remi and Indy together found that the Mexican Revolution was not their war. Remi decided to go back to Europe because if he had to die fighting for something, he wanted to die fighting for his homeland. Indy wanted to go with him and join with the Belgians as well. And so, at sunrise one morning, they began their journey and together formed a long-lasting friendship.
3. When they arrived in London, Indy and Remi went to the Belgian army recruiting office to enlist. Indy did not want to write his American last name on his papers. What name did he write instead?

Answer: Defense

Indy thought they would not accept him if they knew he was American. So when he was thinking of a name, he saw the word DEFENSE written on a poster on the wall and wrote that as his name. The recruiting officer caught on to this right away, but he signed him up anyway.

When they left the recruiting office, Remi told Indy he shouldn't have done it because the Belgian army would take anybody.
4. Remi and Indy were separated at the Battle of the Somme. Remi was wounded, and Indy was captured by Germans and was eventually taken to a maximum security POW prison in which no one had ever escaped from and survived. There he met a French officer named Charles De Gaulle. Together, they planned an escape that actually worked. How did they escape?

Answer: They were carried out in coffins.

Two Russian prisoners had convinced Indy to help them escape by lassoing a rope onto a building steeple and crossing over the river on the rope. Unfortunately, the plan was unsuccessful. The rope broke and both men plunged into the river and drowned. The next day they were found and their bodies laid out in the prison courtyard as an example to any one else who dared an attempt at escape.

Indy innocently said to Charles, "The only way out of here is in a coffin". This gave them the idea. They replaced the dead bodies with themselves in the coffins.

Their plan worked initially- they escaped out of the prison and got to the nearest village. It was then that they were discovered. Charles was recaptured, but Indy got away.
5. Remi's wounds healed and he was sent back to his unit and rejoined Indy. They were eventually deployed to Africa where they were to meet up with the rest of their unit. On the way, they got lost, and ran into a group of older, bumbling British officers. What mission(s)did they trick Indy into volunteering for?

Answer: Both of these

The British officers told Indy and Remi they would be glad to escort them back to their unit, but they needed Indy's help first. They were tracking a German train that mysteriously would disappear in broad daylight and held a large gun that was more powerful than a Big Bertha.

The train, was found to be kept hidden in a secret place underground. They ended up hijacking the train and blowing up the gun. The British gave Indy their thanks with the assurance that they would escort him and Remi to the Belgians. Little did Indy know that they had another plan in mind- to kidnap a German Colonel who was very important to the German cause.

Indy and Remi seized the Colonel and escaped in a hot air balloon. In the end, though, they were forced to give him up after the Germans tracked them through the African desert. Finally, Indy and Remi did manage to make it back to their unit.
6. While on another mission through Africa, Captain Indy and his men became ill and were forced to stop at a German hospital that was operated by a German civilian named Dr. Albert Schweitzer. People in the surrounding villages called him "Oganga". According to Dr. Schweitzer, what did "Oganga" mean?

Answer: The giver and taker of life

They called him this because when he administered anesthesia on his patients and they went to sleep, it was thought by the village people that he took their life. When the procedure was over and he brought them back to consciousness, they thought the patient was miraculously brought back to life.
7. After Indy and Remi left the campaign in Africa, they joined the French Intelligence Agency where they were trained as spies. While waiting for his first assignment, Indy was given a job. What was it?

Answer: Taking photographs of German positions

Indy was assigned to take photos of German positions from the air. He was sent to the famous American Escadrille airfield and flew as a passenger with them when they went out on missions. During his time with the Escadrille, Indy's plane was shot down and he was taken captive by none other than the Red Baron himself, Manfred von Richtofen, who invited Indy to dine with him.

Indy then narrowly escaped being made a prisoner again and was picked up by one of the Escadrille pilots who flew him to safety.
8. Where did Indy celebrate his 18th birthday?

Answer: Russia

Indy was assigned to St. Petersburg, or Petrograd, while working for the French Secret Service. It was a boring desk job. Fortunately, he had good friends who threw him a surprise party. Those same friends happened to be Bolsheviks who were extremely excited about Vladmir Lenin's new concept of Communism which swept through the country. So excited, in fact, that some of them decided to take matters into their own hands by encouraging a march through the city streets.

Not heeding Indy's plead to stay home, they marched anyway, costing the needless loss of several lives including Sergei, one of Indy's best friends.
9. While working as a spy for the French, which assignment was Indy not given?

Answer: Running an underground operation in Brussels behind a restaurant front

Remi was the one assigned to go back to his home in Belgium to run an underground operation out of a restaurant due to his talent for cooking. Indy was assigned all the others at one time or another.
10. While on assignment in Arabia, which old friend was Indy reunited with?

Answer: T.E. Lawrence

Indy was requested by his long time friend Ned Lawrence for a special mission. He was to travel to Beersheba, where the Turks and German forces occupied the only water wells within a hundred mile radius. The wells were wired with explosives to be used if the town was taken by the Allies.

Indy was to go there and cut all the explosive wires so that the British troops could raid the town and have water after being deprived of it for three days of traveling to get there. His partner on the mission was a very beautiful Arab woman (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones) who posed as a spy for the Allies, and attempted to thwart Indy's plans.

In the end, the British attack was successful, and Indy was able to stop a German officer (played by Daniel Craig) from destroying the very last well in the camp.
