Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The New World"- What is the name of the radical new 4400 group that tried to kill Dennis Ryland?

Answer: Nova

The Nova group had formed to protect the future of the returnees. They claimed that was their agenda. TJ Kim, the lady who could make people do her bidding, was in the courtroom when Dennis Ryland's trial took place. She caused someone to shoot Dennis, but he lived through the attack.
Sharif Atkins returned as Gary Navarro, a 4400 mind reader. Diana, Tom, and Nina thought Gary was helping them, but Gary turned out to be part of the Nova group. Sharif played Charles Gallant on "ER" until Gallant was killed in a road side bomb in the Iraqi war.
We also found out that Tom's nephew Shawn, also head of Collier's 4400 center, had been funneling money into the Nova group. When Shawn realized how far Nova was willing to go, he cut the money off and lead NTAC to TJ Kim. The group had a "big event" planned in the season three opener. It was feared to be something catastrophic, but it turned out to be a field of plants growing in the Middle East, where previously only a desert had been.
2. "The New World"- Due to Isabelle's rapid aging, her mother Lily aged fifty years in an instant. Which famous actress played Lily in her late 70s?

Answer: Tippi Hedren

Though she had aged fifty years, Lily seemed OK otherwise.. at first. Then, she began experiencing age related illness and cell death. Isabelle wanted to save her mother, and even considered suicide. Lily died in the car with Richard, after they arrived at the cabin they'd stayed in right after Isabelle was born the year before. Richard cremated Lily (off screen), and then scattered her ashes over the grave stone of her grandmother. Lily's grandmother, also Lily, was Richard's love before he was taken.

The grave scene was seen in the second episode of season three. Tippi Hedren had her first big role in the 1963 Hitchcock movie "The Birds". She went on to guest star on the TV shows "The Courtship of Eddie's Father", "The Bionic Woman", "Hart to Hart", "Hotel", Dream On", and "Providence" before playing Lily on "The 4400".

She was also in the 2004 film, "I Heart Huckabees".
3. "Being Tom Baldwin"- Did Tom really shoot and kill TJ Kim?

Answer: No

One of TJ's Nova group cohorts was a 4400 who was able to create a false image for people's brains to see. Boyd Gelder was taken March 3, 2000. He could cloak himself as whomever he wanted another person to see. He cloaked himself as Tom, and went into an interrogation room with TJ.

He shot her in the forehead, wiped the gun clean, set it down, and left the room. Then, he cloaked himself as Marco and took all the video footage that covered his path to TJ Kim. Boyd also used a Diana disguise to try and get to Tom before the real Diana could.

After Boyd took Alana hostage, she was able to fight him and that allowed Tom to capture him for NTAC.
4. "Being Tom Baldwin"- After getting a new dress, what did Isabelle change about her appearance in this episode?

Answer: her eye color

Shawn's creepy assistant, Matthew, gave Isabelle a pretty green dress. Matthew was trying to convince Isabelle that her ultimate purpose as a 4400 would eventually be at odds with Shawn's purpose. Matthew was steering her toward accepting that she would be considered evil when she fulfills her destiny. Isabelle's research had led her to believe that humans had a choice, and she was sure she would not be evil. But, you can still see the flickers of doubt in her eyes, whenever Matthew's talking to her.
Isabelle was still easily manipulated, as her mind was not as grown as her body. Matthew found out that Jordan was still alive and claimed he'd never get anywhere near Isabelle. I would assume that would be because Jordan would never allow her to be turned bad for the sake of some wayward group.
After Isabelle donned her new green dress, Matthew said it didn't match her eyes and she should fix it. So, she looked at herself in the mirror and made her eyes turn green. Then, she went into Shawn's room to seduce him.
5. "Gone" Pt. 1- Alice Krige played a woman who claimed to be someone's sister. Whose sister did this character, Sarah, say she was?

Answer: Maia Rutledge's

Diana and Maia were in the parking garage of their apartment when Maia remembered she needed to get something. Just as she started to go back, Maia turned back to Diana and said (paraphrase) "you're gonna forget me, I saw it".
When Maia was long in returning, Diana went after her and found her inside the apartment with "Sarah". It was not really Sarah Rutledge. Diana had spent a lot of energy trying to find Maia's younger sister, but she never could. This woman was very solicitous and kind, and happily offered a DNA test to confirm their bond. Her DNA did not match Maia, but she'd already kidnapped her by the time Tom could inform Diana.
Alice Krige is from South Africa. She can be seen guest starring on many TV shows, and played Maddie on "Deadwood". She was also in the 2006 movie "Silent Hill".
6. "Gone" Pt. 1- Including Maia, how many 4400 children were taken in all?

Answer: 5

When Maia realized she'd been trapped inside the house, she came into the hallway outside her room. Once there, she encountered three other children. Lindsey Hammond disappeared in the fall of 1979 and had rainbow colored hair. Brother and sister Duncan and Olivia had the ability to move water, to actually diffuse it from anything it lived inside.

It was Lindsey's idea that they use their powers together to get away from their captors, but she never said what her power was. The next day, Maia's classmate Ryan was taken and placed inside the house with her and the other three children.
7. "Gone" Pt. 1- Using Maia's journal, Marco, Diana and Tom figured out which house it was that the kids had been taken to.

Answer: True

Though Marco mentioned that Maia's writing style, stream of consciousness, and lack of dates made it hard to decipher her predictions, one thing caught Diana's attention. It was her prediction that Diana would forget her. So, the trio took a closer look at the particular page. On it was the forgetting prediction, a trio of butterflies, and another prediction "I'm in the circle with Ryan". Diana knew it was Maia's way of trying to lead her mother to her.

They questioned young Ryan, abducted in 1982 and living with his sister. But, the poor child was clueless at what had happened to Maia. Sadly, he was also taken the next day. While looking at a map for any addresses that included the name Circle, Diana placed her coffee cup down on it. When she lifted it back, there was a ring left behind. Diana instantly knew that this was Maia's circle prediction.

She and Tom canvased the area by car, until Diana spotted a duplicate of the three butterfly drawing in Maia's journal. She was correct, it was the location Maia had been taken.

Unfortunately, the people that took the children used the house has a portal back into the future. Maia was seen in the same room where Tom and Alana had spent a proposed eight years together living a fictional existence in season two. This "Sarah" woman explained to Maia that their experiment was not working on schedule. They were going to send Maia back, to a time before she had been first taken, and she and Diana would be made to forget each other. Maia pleaded for Sarah not to erase her mother, but the woman told her it was for the best of everyone.
8. "Gone" Pt. 2- What did Isabelle do to her father, after he told Shawn to leave her alone?

Answer: she attacked him publicly

Shawn tried to end it with her, but she told him it wouldn't end because she didn't want it to. Then, while dressed like a 1980s reject, she ordered Richard to stay out of her personal life and then used her power to cause him severe chest pains. She stopped short of killing him, and then was very upset afterward. Matthew Ross seemed pleased to see her turn to her darker side. Isabelle had done this to her father once before, while still an infant in season two.
9. "Gone" Pt. 2- How did Tom get the future humans to negotiate a return of the abducted 4400 children?

Answer: he attempted to hang himself from a bridge

After they discovered that children were missing, Marco found out what had happened to some of them. Lindsey Hammond was adopted by a rich man and did great things, as did Ryan Freel. The future humans had sent the kids back before they were originally taken, and the kids had begun to fight the unknown evil of the future. But, Maia had died of smallpox in the mid 1800s. Diana used Alana's ability to trap herself inside a dream world that included Maia, so Tom took a drastic step to save Diana's life.

He jumped off of a bridge with a noose around his neck, and as he had hoped, was snatched into the future before he could hang. The future lady who'd pretended to be Maia's sister Sarah, agreed to return all of the kids to the present day if Tom took on the burden of their entire future.

She explained to him that this option was always a plan B, but they had tried to prevent from burdening him with it. He agreed without knowing his end of the bargain, and he and the kids were all returned.
10. "Gone" Pt. 2- What was the assignment Tom unknowingly agreed to, in order to have all of the abducted kids returned to present day?

Answer: kill Isabelle

Tom agreed to pay any price in order to get the kids back and save Diana's life. He told Diana he'd come up with a plan that might work, while she was still locked inside her dream world. He also said it may be goodbye, in case it didn't work.
He did not open the letter with his instructions until after Maia woke up Diana. When he did, he found a hypodermic needle, and a simple note to kill Isabelle. While in the "in-between" room of the future, the fake Sarah told Tom that the 4400 hadn't been able to alter the coming catastrophe as hoped. She said that their enemies had inserted an unimaginable evil into their world, and that those enemies were much more ruthless and brutal than future humanity.
I suspect Isabelle is the evil they planted, as she's IS showing the signs of evil Matthew told her she had inside her. Matthew is one of the caretakers of that evil, there to nurture it and guide Isabelle to her darkest self. Her aging so fast has left her a powerful adult with the selfishness and narcissism of a child. She never went through the stages of emotional growth and still demands she get whatever she wants. This leaves her open to power of suggestion (both good and evil ones) and extremely dangerous. Maybe Jordan Collier is the answer to saving her... and everyone else.
