Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is no singular person actually named 'Madame Lulu'.

Answer: True

Anyone heading to Caligari Carnival, according to Lemony Snicket, would find nothing more than a poorly-dug pit, some burned out structures, and ash. The phrase in the 'belly of the beast' means that you are 'in a horrible place with little to no chance of escape', and the Baudelaires are pretty much there.

This story gets pretty frightening. Olivia Caliban warns the Baudelaires that they are in the belly of the beast because Count Olaf will soon return. They ask her why she became a fortune teller and she says that the role of Madame Lulu is played by a rotating series of people in V.F.D. and they're there to gather information.

The previous Madame Lulu took Jacques' taxi to Heimlich Hospital to retrieve something of great importance and she was left there to play the role.
2. Where in the Mortmain Mountains does Klaus believe V.F.D. headquarters to be?

Answer: A valley

The Baudelaires inform Olivia that the Quagmires are safe and while she's thrilled about this, there are much more dire issues present. Until the real Madame Lulu returns they need to stall Count Olaf and stay in disguise. She also confirms that she lied to Olaf, stating that a Baudelaire parent survived the fire, and she regrets the orphans hearing this, but it was done with purpose. That said, if Jacques believed it was true then it could be true. Breaking out her copy of 'The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations', Olivia shows the children a map and promises to take them into the Mortmain Mountains to the V.F.D. headquarters.

When Klaus looks at this map, he believes it to be in the Valley of the Four Drafts.
3. Violet believes she can use which of these as a proper vehicle with enough time and proper tools?

Answer: Rollercoaster car

Olivia promises the children that she will take them into the Mortmain Mountains to get to the bottom of the mystery behind their parents, but to do that they would need a vehicle. Violet theorizes that she could make one of the cars on the defunct rollercoaster in the carnival into a working automobile, but she would need something long and rubbery to replace the fan belt. They decide to leave the next morning, and in the meantime, Olivia will keep Olaf distracted.
Before splitting off, Olivia tells the children that she believes V.F.D. to be noble, even if Count Olaf was a member, because at some point there was a schism.
That's when Olaf returns and grabs the bullhorn to demand a crowd's attention. The Baudelaires don their disguises, but on the way out, Violet unknowingly drops her patient tag from Heimlich Hospital.
4. Which word is used to describe the lions in Count Olaf's pit?

Answer: Starving

When Count Olaf gathers a crowd to the big top, Olivia and the Baudelaires are surprised to find that he actually has a horrible plan that he declares is sorcery. He performs a couple of underwhelming magic tricks, but the piece de resistance is the starving lions he has trapped in a pit that his henchpeople dug in the middle of the tent's main ring. Lions, he says, are carnivorous, but they haven't eaten any food. What he will do is, if the crowd returns, feed one of the freaks from the carnival, chosen at random, to the lions.

It's horrifying to most, but Violet's eyes are drawn instead to the whip that Olaf has in his hands-- the Tagliatelle Grande-- because she can use it in an invention. Over dinner (made by Sunny, who could be an excellent chef according to Kevin), Violet thinks about stealing the whip to use as a fan belt.
5. Who, specifically, offers the freaks of Caligari Carnival a job?

Answer: Esme

The Baudelaires try to convince the other freaks that there are many opportunities that can come along and better things to do with their lives besides get eaten at a carnival, but before they can reinforce their case, Esme arrives to demonstrate her love of freaks.

She brings an opportunity, ironically, and out at the fire, Esme offers them a job. She tells the freaks that they can all join Count Olaf's troupe if they wish, but to do that they'll need to commit murder by throwing Madame Lulu into the lion pit during the next show.

The Baudelaires express their disapproval, but Esme gives everyone the night to think over her generous offer. As she departs, Sunny steals the whip from her side. The Baudelaires don't really sleep on it; they don't sleep at all.

Instead, they head to the rollercoaster and get to work.
6. Who finds the Heimlich Hospital tag?

Answer: Count Olaf

During the night, Olaf doesn't sleep either. He asks Madame Lulu who survived the Baudelaire fire, but she refuses to give an answer until morning. When he goes to leave, he ends up stepping on the glass from the broken crystal ball and finds the Heimlich Hospital tag at his feet.
Just before sunrise, the Baudelaires test out the rollercoaster vehicle, taking it for a ride on its track and reflecting on it being an activity that normal children tend to do. The vehicle doesn't make it as far as they anticipate, sadly.
Olivia, meanwhile, packs her things. When she heads out to meet with the orphans, Count Olaf stops them from reuniting. The early crowd is there for a lion feeding and he no longer needs a reading from the spirits. The show must go on.
7. Which freak is drawn from the box and presented to the lions for the big show?

Answer: Beverly and Elliot

The crowd at Caligari Carnival fills up quickly, and some familiar faces from the Baudelaires' past make their appearances; Mr. Poe, Mrs. Bass, and Mr. Remora are all there. Count Olaf soon makes his way to the main ring and announces how excited everyone is going to be for the big top finale. Olaf introduces the freaks and commences a choosing ceremony wherein Madame Lulu opens a box and reveals papers containing the freaks' names.

When he pulls a slip and unfolds it, that freak must walk a plank and leap into the lion pit to their death.

When the ceremony is complete, it turns out to be Violet and Klaus, but they have a plan in their mind, as wicked as it is, to throw Olaf into the pit to save themselves.
8. Who is fed to the lions?

Answer: Olivia

Violet and Klaus walk to the edge of the pit and stand over the lions, but they stop themselves and propose that it would be more entertaining to see someone throw them in. The crowd supports this, and when the children suggest that Olaf be the one to do it, the audience applauds.

He steps forward to do so, but gets horribly spooked by the lions. Esme offers up a solution, and it's not a very nice one; she suggests that Madame Lulu push the two-headed freak in. Olivia has no choice. She walks up to the Baudelaires and admits that she doesn't know what to do.

As the crowd erupts into violence in an attempt to force the children into the pit, Olivia pushes them away from it, saving their lives and telling them to run. She turns to Olaf and reveals herself moments before he cuts the ropes holding up the plank and sends her to her demise.
9. Before leaving Caligari Carnival, Count Olaf purposely sets it ablaze.

Answer: True

Lemony Snicket claims that Olivia was a brave and noble person who did not deserve to end up in the belly of the beast. While the Baudelaires escape, the crowd watches the horrifying display in the big top. It's distracting enough for the children to be able to enter Madame Lulu's tent, grab the things they need, and try to make an escape.

The problem is that Count Olaf's troupe is setting fire to the carnival already. Count Olaf and Esme intercept the children who just barely manage to get their disguises back on, and when he does he finds the map Olivia left behind, coded with the location of V.F.D. headquarters.

He decides that it's their next destination as that would be the likely hiding place of the surviving Baudelaire. Olaf tells Beverly and Elliot to set Madame Lulu's tent on fire while Esme takes Chabo out to the car.

They have no choice. They especially have no choice when Olaf takes their hands, lights the torch, and pushes them to start the blaze on the copy of 'The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations'.
10. Which of the Baudelaires ends up in Count Olaf's clutches in the end?

Answer: Sunny

As everyone departs, Olaf tells Violet and Klaus (as Beverly and Elliot) to get into the caravan containing carnival souvenirs since they're too big to tow. Everyone else, meanwhile, will cram into Olaf's car. They leave as the carnival burns to the ground.
Olaf drives the car towing the caravan up into the Mortmain Mountains. The Baudelaires worry with Sunny up in the front car and them in the back, but there are still a lot of elements to their story that they don't have answers to. V.F.D. plans to head back to their headquarters. The sugar bowl has been found by someone who was formerly Madame Lulu. The Baudelaires will still end up missing and Lemony Snicket doesn't know their whereabouts.
Via walkie-talkie, Olaf tells Violet and Klaus that he figured out who they were a long time ago. As he tells them that he's cutting ties with his past failures, the freaks in the trunk emerge from their spot to cut the rope connecting the car to the caravan and they are separated from their sister. They can do nothing but watch as the car drives away and their caravan hurtles back down the road towards the cliff edge and directly into the belly of the beast.
