This is from the episode "Beyond Repair." Its evident that Eleanor is showing up because, now that she and her husband are divorcing, she doesn't want to be cut off from the family. However, she is not welcomed, as she is passive aggressive and emotionally alienating. Carter has always respected her, but he resents the fact that after he got stabbed, she didn't come to visit him for THREE weeks! She thinks he is blaming her for his drug use.

He instead accuses her of never being a mother to him, particularly since his brother's death.

In the episode, "I'll be Home for Christmas," Carter's father tried to explain to Carter that he just couldn't take Eleanor's coldness anymore. This is from the episode "Four Corners." At his parents urging, Carter goes to find his grandmother, so she can mingle with the guests. She's sitting in one of their convertibles. Millicent had saved a bottle of champagne for her 60th wedding anniversary, less than a year away. Instead, she invites Carter to share it with her. He does. Then, they drive off together for a spin.

Millicent had inquired about the whereabouts of her grandson, and Susan was highly unhelpful. Carter then approaches and cries "Gamma," to Susan's chagrin. She tells Carter that she didn't know that was his grandmother, which elicits the above response.

And they...It wasn't me, I mean it was me, but it wasn't...anyway, I did the program. I pretended that I bought into it, I did everything I was supposed to do, except believe that I had anything to do with what had happened. And then...I almost relapsed...or I guess, I guess I did relapse. Anyway, I didn't come to see you Chase, because I didn't want to admit to the fact that I was just like you.

The truth is...there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of getting high. It's the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning...and it's the last thing I think of when I go to bed at night. And I think about it all day. (long pause) I'm a drug addict." What was Chase's reply? "You bring any french fries?" In his own way, he was probably letting Carter off the hook.

Tending to her brother prevents her from assisting with funeral arrangements and comforting Carter with his grief. Additionally, her uninvited brother throws himself in the grave at the funeral. Finally, after the funeral, Carter is to meet Abby at the hospital, where she plans on dropping her brother off. Admitting Eric takes a while, and while Carter's waiting, he gets prematurely sucked back into the trauma and dying of the ER.
