Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After being canceled on CBS in 1949, Morey Amsterdam (who later had his most-remembered TV role as comedy writer Buddy Sorrell on "The Dick Van Dyke Show") took his comedy/variety show to DuMont. What other well-known comedy actor co-starred with Morey on this show?

Answer: Art Carney

Carney played Charlie the doorman. He also played Newton, the waiter at the Silver Swan Cafe, the fictional nightclub which was the setting of the show.
2. Between what early- to mid-Baby Boomer years did the DuMont Network operate?

Answer: 1946-56

Owned by DuMont Laboratories, the network began operation in 1946, but was never on solid financial ground. Plagued by high operational costs, when the FCC demanded that it start to broadcast on UHF channels, it was too much to continue. It ceased operations in 1956.
3. What was unusual about the advertising on DuMont at that time period in TV broadcasting?

Answer: A show's ad time slots were sold to a variety of sponsors.

During the late 40's and early 50's, as in radio, there was one sponsor per TV program. This practice allowed the advertiser to control the show's content. By selling advertising time to a variety of sponsors, it freed producers from the control of sole sponsorship. This practice gradually spread to other networks and set the standard of advertising on modern TV.
4. Don't hang around this question too long, but which of these early TV shows was NOT a program of DuMont?

Answer: Kobbs Korner

"Kobbs Korner", a musical variety show, was only aired on CBS. "The Growing Paynes" was a sit-com (1948-49) revolving around an insurance salesman and his family. "The O'Neills" (1949-50) was a drama transposed from a radio show which centered on Peggy O'Neill, a single mom with two children. "Rocky King" was a police drama starring Roscoe Karns as a hard-working detective in New York.

These latter three were exclusively aired on DuMont.
5. Don't drop dead trying to figure this out, but from 1952 to 1955, which religion-based program always ran in the 8-8:30 PM Tuesday time slot?

Answer: Life Is Worth Living

On "Life is Worth Living", Bishop Fulton J. Sheen delivered ecumenical talks for which he won an Emmy Award in 1952. In the 1955 broadcast season, this program switched to ABC where it ran until 1957.
6. You won't get rich guessing which actor was the original star of the DuMont show "Captain Video and His Video Rangers"; who was it?

Answer: Richard Coogan

Playing Captain Video in the show's premier 1949-50 season, Richard Coogan went on to star in "The Californians" as Matt Wayne, mayor of San Fransisco. After Coogan's departure, Al Hodge took over the role of Video until 1955.
7. Another popular variety show, "Cavalcade of Stars", featured some up-and-coming comedy actors as hosts. Take it from the horses mouth, who was never a host of this program?

Answer: Alan Young

Carter hosted the 1949-50 season and Gleason from 1950-52. Storch was the summer host in 1951 and 52. Alan Young is best remembered as Wilbur Post, owner of the talking horse, Mr. Ed, on the show of the same name. Young also had his own comedy/variety show on CBS from 1950-53.
8. Quiz/game shows were and still are a popular TV genre. Don't break a leg trying to answer this, but which of these quiz shows never aired on DuMont?

Answer: Break the Bank

"Break the Bank" aired on every network except DuMont during its run from 1949-57. All the other named shows aired exclusively on DuMont.
9. "Hands of Mystery", a DuMont series, would best be described as what genre of programming?

Answer: A suspense anthology

This series was broadcast live and the plots involved mainly murder and suspense with a smattering of supernatural and historical themes. It aired from 1949 to 1951, with the title being changed twice (the other titles were "Hands of Murder" and "Hands of Destiny").
10. In the DuMont series "Colonel Humphrey Flack", which character actor played this dapper and witty con man, by Godfrey?

Answer: Alan Mowbray

"Colonel Humphrey Flack" (a.k.a. "The Adventures of Colonel Flack"), ran during the 1953-54 season and was broadcast live. It was based on a series of stories by Everett R. Castle which appeared in "The Saturday Evening Post". Mowbray also starred along with William Powell and Carole Lombard in the 1936 screwball comedy movie "My Man Godfrey".
