Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What planet does most of the action in "The Ghost Monument" take place on?

Answer: Desolation

"The Ghost Monument", the second episode of series eleven, takes place on a wasteland planet called Desolation. The Doctor and her companions find themselves part of a galactic road rally whose finish line is on the planet Desolation.

At the start of the episode, the Doctor and her companions were floating in space. That is because they planet they were supposed to land on was in the wrong place.

Darillium is noted for its singing towers. The Twelfth Doctor spent 24 years there with River Song.
2. What is the name of the spaceship that rescued the Doctor and Yazmin?

Answer: Cerebos

The Cerberos, piloted by Epzo Finkstad, The Doctor managed to crash land the craft on Desolation when most of the ship's systems failed. The Doctor has gotten quite good at surviving crash landings in her new incarnation.

The Madame du Pompadour is central to "The Girl in the Fireplace" (2006), The Penatlian was the spaceship in "42" (2007), Chris Chibnall's first episode of "Doctor Who." The Byzantium was the ship that crashed on Alfava Metraxis in "Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone" (2010).
3. What was the name of Angstrom's home planet?

Answer: Albar

Angstrom, the orange haired pilot, was a refugee from the planet Albar. Her planet had been the subject of ethnic cleansing by evil aliens. Angstrom described her planet as a place of rusting high rises. It was stated several times that she was an Albarian.

Alzarius was the home of Adric, companion to the Fourth and Fifth Doctor. Androzani Major and Minor feature in Peter Davison's last episode "The Caves of Androzani" (1984), widely regarded as one of the best episodes of Classic Who. Alfalva Metraxis is where River Song and the Eleventh Doctor fought the Weeping Angels in "The Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone" (2010).
4. What were the Doctor and her companions running from in the ruins?

Answer: killer robots

The ruins contained murderous robots armed with laser pistols. The cloth creatures showed up later, in the dark. The flesh eating bacteria was present in the water.

Ryan made a first attempt at attacking the robots with a laser rifle, using moves he had learned playing "Call of Duty." The Doctor was able to disable the robots using an electro-magnetic pulse, proving that brains were better than bullets.
5. What is NOT one of the facts we learned about acetylene gas during "The Ghost Monument"?

Answer: It can be used to make plastics

Ryan noted that acetylene smells like garlic and is lighter than air. Graham used a cigar to demonstrate that the gas is highly flammable, and burned up the cloth monsters that were attacking them. Technically, the garlic part is inaccurate. Acetylene in its natural form is odorless; it only smells if there are impurities.

While the use of acetylene for chemical purposes has dramatically declined in most countries due to environmental concerns, it is still widely used for making plastics in China.
6. In "The Ghost Monument" (2018), what alien race turned the planet into a wasteland?

Answer: Stenza

The Stenza, who we first met in "The Woman Who Fell to Earth", are back again as the villains in this episode, even though we don't see any of them. The planet became a wasteland when the Stenza kidnaped scientists and forced them to perform bio-warfare experiments that resulted in all sorts of nasty creatures destroying the planet. Angstrom claimed the Stenza had pillaged her planet and committed genocide.

The Stenza are blue, wear teeth in their faces, have a very bizarre political system and come from a galaxy that is a very long distance from Earth. They appear to be shaping up as a theme for series eleven.

Sensorites appeared in the First Doctor adventure "The Sensorites" (1964). Sontarans are the potato-looking clone race that the Doctor has fought on multiple occasions; Strax is a Sontaran. The Tenza are a race with extraordinary psychic abilities, and were featured in the Eleventh Doctor adventure "Night Terrors" (2011).
7. What was the name of the sponsor of the Rally of Twelve Galaxies?

Answer: Ilin

His name was Ilin. According to the host, the race had started with 4000 contestants, and was now down to the final two: Epzo and Angstrom. The winner would receive 3.2 trillion Krin, which is apparently a very large sum of money in whatever galaxy the Doctor and the companions happened to land in.

The winner had to survive the hazards on the planet and make it to the Ghost Monument - which turned out to be the TARDIS. Because naturally. Ilin was forced to name joint winners of the contest.

Ilin was played by veteran character actor Art Malik. He is probably best known to Americans as the lead terrorist in the Arnold Schwarzenegger film "True Lies" (1994). A native of Pakistan, Malik has frequently played a doctor when he is not playing a terrorist.
8. Where was Epzo shot by one of the sniper robots?

Answer: his shoulder

Epzo got shot, but not too seriously, by one of the sniper robots. He was wounded in his right shoulder. The sniperbots were relatively easy to knock down, but they did refresh themselves rather rapidly; fortunately, like most bad guys, they were lousy shots.
9. What did the TARDIS give the Doctor as a gift when she returned in "The Ghost Monument"?

Answer: A cookie (biscuit)

The Doctor did not need a new sonic screwdriver; she had already made one from Sheffield steel in "The Woman Who Fell to Earth" (2018).

When the Doctor entered the TARDIS, she discovered it had redesigned itself. It has design elements from several versions of the TARDIS, including circles and some of the more organic designs seen in the Ninth and Tenth Doctors TARDISes. And for once, the Doctor liked the new TARDIS.

The TARDIS gave the Doctor a cookie. The Eleventh Doctor was fond of cookies, particularly Jammie Dodgers. Jelly babies, a British candy, have played a major role in the history of the show, dating back to the Second Doctor.

Chocolate has made a variety of appearances over the course of "Doctor Who" ranging from a marriage proposal in "The Aztecs" (1964) to the Tenth Doctor offering Lady Christina de Souza chocolate in "Planet of the Dead" (2009).
10. Who wrote the "Doctor Who" episode "The Ghost Monument"?

Answer: Chris Chibnall

Chris Chibnall, the new showrunner for "Doctor Who", wrote the second episode as well as the season opener. Chibnall has worked extensively with new Doctor Jodie Whittaker in the crime drama "Braodchurch" which he created. This is the seventh episode Chibnall has written to air; his first was the Tenth Doctor adventure "42" back in 2007.

Ian Gelder was the voice of "The Remnants" the deadly floating clothes with frightening psychic abilities. He has been acting since 1993, and is known to "Doctor Who" fans for his work in "Torchwood: Children of Earth" (2009).

Mark Tonderai was the director of "Ghost Monument." He has directed several films and a variety of television programs since the 1990s.

Tosin Cole plays Ryan Sinclair, one of the Doctor's companions. He has been acting since 2009, and got his start in the British soap operas "Holly Oaks" and "Eastenders." Cole had a small role in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015) as Lieutenant Bastian.
