The episode began in the alley behind The Magic Box. The vampire that Buffy slayed had never heard of her before, and she's a little surprised. She then went into the store, where the gang discussed the ritual.

2. "Makes you warm, makes you hard, makes you other than dead." What was Spike referring to in this quote?

Answer: blood

When it was explained that Dawn's blood is the only thing that starts and stops the ritual, Buffy was agitated. Spike gave his opinion on why it's always blood.
