Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A deathbed confession caused quite a stir at the beginning of this episode, and Sophia was accused of burning down her old retirement home. But what was the name of this place?

Answer: Shady Pines

At the beginning of this episode the girls received a visit from a Miami-Dade detective looking to question Sophia about the night Shady Pines burned down. He then informed them that he had received a deathbed confession from a woman named Maria Heartgrove, who claimed that it was she and Sophia who were responsible for burning the place down.

In true Sophia fashion, the detective was greeted by plenty of sarcastic quips, including, "She died? Good riddance! God rest her soul." Moreover, when the detective explained his reason for calling, Dorothy exclaimed, "What? That's ridiculous!", before turning to her mother and demanding, "What did you do?"
2. What had Sophia and another woman been cooking on the night their retirement home burned down, which supposedly led to the fire?

Answer: S'mores

The detective who visited at the start of this episode informed the girls that during her deathbed confession, Maria Heartgrove revealed that she and Sophia had been cooking s'mores. Feigning ignorance, Sophia exclaimed, "Nonsense! I don't even know what s'mores are!", prompting Rose to reply, "You remember Sophia, those little toasted graham cracker and chocolate sandwiches".

Her concentration waning for a moment, Sophia then replied, "With marshmallow, don't forget the marshmallow", before coming to her senses with a hilarious little "Oops!"
3. What reason did Sophia give an investigating detective for Maria Heartgrove's supposed jealousy, which led to her deathbed claims that it was Sophia's hotplate that caused the retirement home fire?

Answer: Sophia still had her own hair.

When the detective informed Sophia that Maria had claimed that Sophia had been "in possession of an illegal hotplate", which had led to the curtains catching fire, Sophia replied that, "Maria was just out to get me. She was always jealous because I still have my own hair." However, unfortunately for Sophia, the detective revealed that he had no choice but to arrest her "on a charge of negligent arson".
4. Throughout this episode, Sophia remained staunchly confident that she would not be convicted of the retirement home fire.

Answer: False

Poor Sophia was not at all confident that she wouldn't be convicted of burning down Shady Pines, her old retirement home. To begin with, she couldn't remember that particular night at all and feared that she had indeed had something to do with it. In a conversation with Dorothy, who told her, "Ma, just because your memory is fuzzy, it doesn't mean that you're guilty", she replied, "It doesn't mean I'm innocent either."
5. Finish the following quote, which came moments after Sophia's lawyer finished interviewing Rose: "Now that I've heard you, I think I'll probably just plead _____."

Answer: Insanity

In a hilarious moment with Sophia's lawyer and Rose, the former came out with the above quotation, after listening to Rose describe how she was the one with "the level head". Reminiscing about the past, (in the form of moments from previous episodes), such as protesting for sea mammals and giving advice to others in the form of St. Olaf stories, Sophia's lawyer was nearly at a loss for words and could not escape Rose's company quickly enough.
6. What was Dorothy's response to Sophia's request that she tell the court she was "sweet and cute" and didn't have it in her "to harm a fly"?

Answer: "What? You want me to perjure myself?"

When Sophia sought Dorothy as a character witness, a humorous little interchange took place, resulting in Dorothy asking, "What? You want me to perjure myself?" This comedic moment was made even funnier by Sophia's response, as she nodded her head gravely before saying, "Basically!"
7. Uncertain about the outcome of her trial, Sophia decided to jump bail and move back to Sicily.

Answer: True

After visibly cheering up, a relieved Dorothy asked her mother why she was "walking down memory lane all of a sudden", initially believing it was her fear of going to prison that had prompted the return to the past. However, Sophia soon revealed it was something quite different, as she had decided to jump bail and return to Sicily.
8. What was Rose describing when she talked about "the coldness of it, the steel bars, the wedges of cheese hanging overhead tantalisingly just out of reach"?

Answer: Prison

In this humorous scene, Rose was actually describing prison, following Dorothy's comment that Sophia was still very much concerned about the outcome of her negligent arson case. Indeed it seemed that St. Olaf's prison had merged with its delicatessen, prompting Rose to believe that all prisons were built alike.
9. Which room of the house did Blanche refer to as "crisis central", causing she, Dorothy and Rose to reminisce about various times of crisis?

Answer: The kitchen

As Blanche, Dorothy and Rose sat around the kitchen table trying to think of ways to prove that Sophia had nothing to do with the Shady Pines fire, they began to reminisce about past crises. Cutting to a clip from a previous episode, Blanche could be seen explaining to Dorothy that it was to Sophia that she always went in the middle of the night for help with her "deepest personal problems". Moments later, Rose appeared at the kitchen table, also revealing that she too often went to Sophie's room to talk.

These clips served to remind the girls that Sophia was not just a mother to Dorothy, but also to Rose and Blanche.
10. What electrical appliance did Sophia eventually remember caused the fire at her old retirement home?

Answer: The heater

Near the end of the episode Sophia finally began to remember what had happened during the night of the Shady Pines fire. Indeed she remembered that it had been the heater and not her hotplate which had started the fire, prompting her lawyer to state that along with the suspicious actions of the fire inspector, they had enough evidence to get the charges against her dropped.
