Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does Sophia respond when Blanche says, "You probably haven't noticed it but I put on three pounds"?

Answer: "On each side!"

Sophia's words are said at the beginning of this episode, while the girls are in the kitchen. Sophia is particularly cranky, and therefore vicious in her retorts, due to the fact that they are out of pepperoni. Like a spoilt, petulant child she pouts at the kitchen table, rejecting both Blanche's offering of celery stuffed with cottage cheese and Dorothy's suggestion of broiled chicken.
2. According to Dorothy, which girl (created by Margaret Mitchell) "and her waistline were" both fiction?

Answer: Scarlett O'Hara

Dorothy comes out with this quotation while she is in the kitchen with her mother and Blanche, who are both intent on discussing food. Blanche is in the middle of preparing a "raw vegetable platter", which is part of her attempts to lose the three pounds in weight she claims to have gained.

As she states nostalgically, "I used to have a waist just like Scarlett O'Hara. Well you know that girl had an eighteen inch waistline." This prompts Dorothy to come out with the quotation detailed in the above question.
3. What does Rose claim she "can't worry about" now, which prompts Dorothy to respond with "Sure you can honey, I'll help you. Food. Clothing. Shelter."?

Answer: Losing her job at the grief counselling centre

Following Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia's mundane chatter about food, Rose snaps them all back to reality when she reveals that she has lost her job, due to the closure of the grief counselling centre. While Dorothy and Blanche express their concern, kind-hearted Rose insists "I'm fine! Don't worry about me, it's all those other people".

Indeed she is far more worried about her clients rather than her own dire situation, which results in Dorothy's harsh response, which is described in the question.
4. "If you have to go out tomorrow, ask those cry-babies not to call during ___." What soap opera is Sophia annoyed about missing, and thus belongs in the blank?

Answer: "The Young and the Restless"

Following the closure of the grief counselling centre, Rose does all she can to help the distressed find alternative arrangements, even going so far as to give them her own phone number. She even invites one man, named Milton, into her home (much to Dorothy's chagrin) and tells him that he can call her whenever he needs to, be it day or night. Even Sophia is involved in fielding calls from those wishing to speak to Rose, and with so many messages being left, Sophia begs Rose to tell her callers not to call during her favourite soap opera, "The Young and the Restless".
5. Dorothy meets up with an old high school crush during this episode. What is his name?

Answer: Barry Glick

Early on in this episode Dorothy is ecstatic to receive a telephone message from an old high school crush of hers named Barry Glick. When Sophia asks whether or not she's going to see him, Dorothy responds with "See him? If he's within fifty pounds of where he used to be I'm going to marry him".

However Dorothy is eventually brought back down to earth with a bang when she discovers that Barry Glick is now gay.
6. Though she never thinks of herself as old, during this particular episode it dawns on Rose that others most certainly do.

Answer: True

When Rose is confronted about not looking for work, it is revealed that she has in fact had dozens of interviews, but has neglected to tell her roommates about them. In an emotional outburst in the middle of the night, Rose confesses that "no one wants me", but "I can't afford not to work".

She then adds, "I never think of myself as old, but everyone else does", before coming to the conclusion that maybe "I am old, old and useless and terrified".
7. According to Dorothy, what was her "part of the [Korean] war effort"?

Answer: Sleeping with Stanley

Having cheered up Rose, rather than going back to bed the girls enjoy a late-night feast in the kitchen. During this, Dorothy reveals that it was her ex-husband Stanley who prevented her from getting together with Barry Glick during her high school years.

She explains to the girls that Stanley told her "he was being shipped off to Korea and would probably die" and it would mean so much to him if Dorothy slept with him, which she then did. She then adds "that was my part of the war effort".
8. Does Blanche agree to go on a date with one of the men who previously visited Rose at the grief counselling centre?

Answer: Yes

Near the end of the episode, one of Rose's ex-clients (Milton) turns up at the house again, though this time he is there to see Blanche, not Rose. He also seems to have perked up considerably, flattering Blanche frequently, before arranging to take her out on a date that night.
9. At the end of this episode, which Golden Girl tells another that her date has a penchant for fat women?

Answer: Rose

When Blanche checks that Rose has no romantic interest in her ex-client Milton, she is mortified to learn that he only likes fat women. The reason for this is that Blanche has already agreed to go on a date with him, and has also spent most of the episode trying to lose weight. Needless to say, Blanche ends the episode with a sour expression on her face, all too aware that this must mean that Milton sees her as overweight.
10. Which Golden Girl ends this episode with a new job, as a waitress at the Fountain Rock coffee house?

Answer: Rose

Having searched for a new job throughout this particular episode, Rose is thrilled with her new position at the Fountain Rock coffee house. However Dorothy and Blanche are not quite as enthusiastic initially, for as Blanche points out, it's "gritty, grimy, gruelling work". However Rose is not brought down by this, and points out that it sure beats being unemployed.
