Dr. Mike knew what to do in a way but Doc Eli was more experienced in the operation. As he held the scalpel his hands shook so much he couldn't do it so he handed it to Dr. Mike who took over the operation with him telling her what to do.

Although we all know now that we all have different blood types that it has nothing to do with being male or female. In Loren's case, his sister Olive offered to donate which scientifically would have been wise as they were likely the same type but Sully donated blood and it worked. My theory why Sully's donation worked on Loren is that they happened to be the same blood type.

It's the only logical explanation that makes sense.
